churchleadersas advocacypractitionersto supportpeoplewhen they suffer injustice.
The practitionershave receivedtraining for one month a year over a four- year period.
Forty- six traineesgraduatedin 2005 and their certificate is recognizedby the government.
The training is given by six lawyersandthe coursescover:
. The Ethiopian constitution
. Introduction to law
. Human rights
. A detailed study of laws conceming business,public finance, labour, civil
societyandpenallaw
. Sharialaw (as over 30% of the populationare Muslim)
. Support courses in English and mathematics.
The underlying basisfor the training is a biblical quote from Proverbs31: 8- 9, "Speak
up for thosewho cannotspeakfor themselves,for the rights of aIl who are destitute.Speakup
andjudge fairly; defendthe rights of the poor and needy".
One of the practitioners,EndaleEro, found two girls crying. When he askedaboutthe
problem, they told him that they had applied and been interviewed and acceptedfor posts
within the local govemment.However, when they reported for work they found that others
had been given the posts. Endale askedfor permissionto speakon their behalf. He took the
issueto court and won the casefor them. Not only did they receive their jobs but they were
alsocompensated.
