Introduction
The Geotechnical Investigation records
comprise two parts
1. Complete field and laboratory records
maintained by the investigation agency.
2. Records and results summary presented
to the owner.

Sample log book (lab)
This is kept in the testing laboratory
The samples received in the laboratory is
listed with it’s
1. identification number,
2. project name,
3. borehole number,
4. sample depth, and
5. sample type
Sample log book (lab)
Most importantly each sample received in the
laboratory shall be visually identified and
described by a geotechnical engineer.

This step is missing in most of the

laboratories.
Lab Testing Schedule
The sample log book shall have the laboratory
testing schedule as approved by the
geotechnical engineer.

SPT
In house Records of the Agency
Complete details of each test shall be
available with the testing agency.
Usually these details may be spread over
several records. Example
1. One record book for NMC determination
2. One for Liquid Limit and Plastic Limit
3. One for Shrinkage limit
4. One for Grain size analysis, etc.
Exploratory Boring Log - Final

The soil description in the field log is suitably

modified based on the detailed identification
by the engineer supplemented by the
classification test results.

This log shall group similar types of soil

sequentially to make them as a single layer
