Introduction
Role of Traffic Sign
 Provide Safety of Road users

 Improving Efficiency of the Road system by providing orderly movement of

all road users in both rural and urban area

 Guidance
Information
 Warning when and where
it is most effective for
 Regulation influencing safe behavior

3
Principle of Road Signs

i. Fulfil a need

ii. Conveys Clear and Simple Meaning

iii. Command Attention

iv. Command Respect from Road Users

v. Give Adequate Time for Response

4
Types of Road Signs

1. Regulatory/Mandatory sign:
The indicate prohibition on
certain type of vehicle
maneuver. Violation is an
offence
2. Warning Sign Warn road users
on change in road conditions;
helps avoid accidents
3. Informatory sign: Provide
information to users; helps
improve traffic efficiency
5
Placement of Ground Mounted Road Signs
i. The extreme edge of the ground mounted sign adjacent to the roadway
shall be at a distance of 600 mm to 3 m from the carriageway or paved
shoulder edge

ii. On kerbed roads, the bottom edge of the lowest sign shall not be less
than 2.1 m and not more than 2.5 m above the kerb. Minimum head room
of 2.1 m shall be provided Where the signs are erected above in area
intended to be used by pedestrian

iii. On roads without kerb, the bottom edge of the lowest sign shall not be
less than 2 m and not more than 2.5 m above the crown of the
pavement.

6
Improper Signs Placement

Signage should be placed Signage should be placed

clearing Earthen Shoulder behind the Crash Barrier
7
Damaged Sign on Earthen Shoulder

8
Placement of Gantry Mounted Road Signs
i. Overhead signs shall provide a vertical clearance of not less
than 5.5 m over the entire width of the pavement and shoulders

ii. Gantry mounted signs should be mounted on columns

preferably at 7 m or more distance from the nearest traffic
lane on shoulder side and 2 m from kerb toward median side

iii. Wherever minimum lateral clearance cannot be maintained for

gantry columns from shoulder edge line, such exposed column
shall be protected with crash barrier

9
Unsafe Gantry Pole Foundation Higher than Carriageway

10
Guidelines for Mounting of Signs
Mounting Characteristics Suggested Locations
Form
Roadside Side- mounted signs over the verge. Generally appropriate for all types
of roads with adequate roadside
space.
Cantilever Overhead signs partially over the Generally, more economical for
carriageway. smaller directional signs.
Gantry Overhead sings spanning overthe Appropriate for larger signs, heavy
carriageway. traffic flow, traffic lanes>=3 and
lane drops.
Double/ Overhead signs on separator/ divider, Recommended only when
Butterfly partially over the carriageway on both approach speed is low or
Cantilever sides of the separator/ divider. deployment of crash cushion is
assured on the median

11
Siting of Sign (Height & Clearance)

12
Siting of Road Signs Along Highway

i. Gantry are provided at min. 200 m distance before intersection

ii. Reassurance Signs are normally placed about 100-150 m after the
intersection
iii. Place Identification Signs are normally placed about 90 m to 150m in
advance of the start of the built-up area
iv. Flag type direction signs are generally installed at the nose of diverging
lanes
v. When several signs have to be placed along the same section of road, they
do not obscure each other. The location of two signs should be of
minimum 0.6*V meter apart (where V is the 85th percentile speed in
km/h).

13
Avoid Clustering of Signs

14
Orientation of Shoulder Mounted Sign
 The signs are generally placed at right angle to the line of travel of
approaching traffic

 Parking signs are fixed at 15 Deg to the carriageway to give better

visibility

 On horizontal curves, the angle of placement of sign should be determined

w.r.t course of approaching traffic. Sign can be turned slightly away from
road i.e. up to 95 deg to enhance legibility during night

 Sign faces are generally vertical, but on gradients it may be desirable to tilt
the sign forward or backward from the vertical to make it normal to the line
of sight
15
Signs Fabrication
 Aluminum plate thickness shall be 2mm for signs exceeding maximum side dimension
more than 600 mm

 Aluminum composite material plate thickness shall be 4mm for signs exceeding maximum
side dimension more than 600 mm

 Micro Prismatic grade sheeting as per ASTM D 4956 Type XI shall be used on NH i.e.
Project Highway

 Type XI Sheeting can be used on SH and Type IV on Other Cross Roads

 Fabrication: Sign with a side dimension up to 1200 mm shall not have any joints (splices)
in the base retro reflective sheeting and in the Substrate (Plate)

 Printing: Messages (legends, letters, numerals, etc.) and borders shall be Digitally-
printed
16
Sign Posts and Mountings
 All sign post shall be Galvanized Iron Pipes

 Provide two coats of epoxy paint or powder coating to GI post

 Signs with an area up to 0.9 sqm shall be mounted on single post, and for
greater area, two or more posts shall be provided

 The overhead signs shall be designed to withstand a wind loading of 150

kg/sqm normal to the face of the sign and 30 kg//sqm transverse to the
face of the sign. In addition to the dead load of the structure, walkway
loading of 250 kg concentrated live load shall also be considered for the
design of the overhead sign structure

17
Sign Warranty and Reference
 The Contractor shall submit original warranty
documents from reflective sheet
manufacturer having a unique number with
date and shall be addressed to the Engineer
incharge with the project details including details
of sign boards installed. The warranty shall be
for 10 years including printing for micro
prismatic Class C sheeting (Type VIII,IX & XI),
7 years for class B sheeting (Type IV)

 A reference number along with the type of

sheeting, manufacturer name, month and
year of installation shall be placed on the
back of sign in a contrasting colour or by
