Lesson 1

LIVING AND NON-LIVING THINGS

Let us look carefully at the picture above.

What do we see in the picture? There is a table. There is a
pot with a plant on the table. A child is standing near the
table.
Let us now keep a pot with a plant on the table as shown in
the picture.
“Karim, come and stand near the table.”
“Now, walk three steps ahead” - said the teacher.
Karim walked on his own.
Can the table walk on its own?
Can the plant walk on its
own?
No, they cannot.
“We have seen that only
PCarimcan walk from one place
to another on his own” - said
the teacher.
Look at the things around you. Write the names of any five
things that can move on their own from one place to another

one place to another on their own.
But plants do show movement.
You may have seen some flowers
opening in the sunlight and closing
at the time of sunset. The sunflower
can be seen always turning in the
direction of the sun.
This is one type of movement.
The blooming of buds into flowers
is another type of movement.
Leaves of some plants, such as
Touch-Me-Not, shrink when we
touch them. This is another
example of movement in plants.
“Once again, let us turn our
attention to Karim, the table and
the plant” - said the teacher.

What things does Karim need to

stay alive?
He needs food, water and air to live,
What things does a plant need to
stay alive?
A plant also needs food, water and
air.

However, plants make their own food

in the sunlight. They need carbon
dioxide, water and mineral salts to
make their food.
They get carbon dioxide from the
atmosphere.
Water and mineral salts are taken
from the sod through the roots.

Some of the water is taken

from the atmosphere through
the pores in the leaves.
Does the table also need food
and air to live?
No, it does not need any food
or air.
Name ciny three things that need food, water and air to live
and £my three things that do not.
