Detailed Lesson Plan in SCIENCE AND HEALTH III

I. Objectives

At the end of the discussion, pupils are be able to:

 identify the two basic components of an ecosystem;
 differentiate living things from non-living things; and
 categorize things as living or non-living

II. Subject Matter

A. Topic: Components of the Ecosystem: Living Things and Non-Living things (S3LT-IIe-f-
II. ST3LT-IIg-hI3)
B. Values: Appreciate the significance of living things as well as the non-living things in
daily life.
C. Materials: apple, containers, flash cards, pictures, puzzles, videos

III. Procedure

Teacher’s Activity Pupils’ Activity

A. PREPARATORY ACTIVITIES

1. Prayer
Let’s have the opening prayer before we start
our lesson.

Jesus, thank you for this day, thank you for

protecting us, thank you for guiding us and
thank you for loving us always. Jesus, please
bless and take care of us through the day.
Amen.

2. Greetings
Good morning song

Good morning class!

3. Drill
Everybody say and do:
I sit properly, hands on my desk, feet together Good morning ma’am!
and listen to my teacher.

4. Checking of attendance
Class monitor, Is everybody present?
Yes mam
I’m expecting for an active discussion with you
grade 3, will you promise me that we will have
an active discussion?
(Pupil will answer)
5. Review
Last time, we discussed about the ecosystem.
What is an ecosystem?
Yes ma’am.

Very good. Ecosystem is where the organisms interact

with each other and their environment.
Are you ready for another fun and exciting
Science Class?

Great! Let’s explore, learn and have fun!

6. Motivation
Yes ma’am.
Class, do you have any favorite fruit?
(Raise their hands)
What is that fruit?
(Give their answers)
Yes, (pupil) what is your favorite fruit?

Class, what is this? (Shows apple)

Apple.

Yes, anyone can describe this apple.

It is red in color ma’am.
Very good. What can we do to this apple?
We can eat it ma’am.
Yes correct, since we can eat this apple,
meaning it is an example of a food.

Also I have here a container with water.

What are the uses of water? We can drink it ma’am.

What else?

Yes correct, but the most important use of

water is that we can drink it.

Another one

(Shows container)
Nothing ma’am.
What do you observe in this container?
Is there anything inside it? Yes ma’am.

Are you sure?

I’ll give you a clue, you can’t see it, but you Air ma’am.
can feel it. What is that?

Where can we find or feel the air? Everywhere.

Everywhere indeed!

Last, a picture of mommy elephant and her

baby elephant.

What do you observe with the mommy and They were look alike.
baby elephant?

Yes the baby elephant looks like the mother

elephant.

Very nice observation class!

So for today we will be exploring the world of
the living and non-living things

Here are our objectives for today’s lesson you

are expected to
 identify the two basic components of
an ecosystem;
 differentiate living things from non-
living things; and
 categorize things as living or non-living

B. PRESENTATION
Our ecosystem has two components, the living
and non-living things.

The examples earlier, these four represent the

characteristics of a LIVING THING!

Let us analyze!

Living things
- Living is used to describe anything that
is alive.

Checklist:

 All living things need to eat food to

grow.
 All living things need water to survive.
 All living things need air to breathe.
 All living things can reproduce.

Class, since we already have here the

checklist of a living thing, let’s now identify if
(pupil) is a living thing.

Does (pupil) needs food to grow? Yes ma’am.

Does (pupil) needs water to survive? Yes ma’am.

Does (pupil) needs air to breathe? Yes ma’am.

Where do you breathe?

Nose.
Does (pupil) can reproduce?
Yes ma’am.
We cannot already say, but predominantly
yes.

So, since (pupil) needs food, air, and water

and can reproduce, (pupil) is now an example
of what? Living thing.

Very good. Why do we classify (pupil) as

Living thing?
Because (classmate) needs food, air, water,
and can reproduce.
Very good. Since (pupil) is a human, therefore
all humans are example of living things.

What do we need to grow? Raise your hands. We need food.

What do we need to breathe? We need air.

Why do we need water? We need water to survive.

What do we call when we make thing just like We reproduce.

us?

What is this?

Dog ma’am.

And a dog is an example of? Animal ma’am.

Yes good, now let’s see if this dog is a living

thing. Let’s look at the checklist again.

Does this dog needs food to grow? Yes ma’am.

Does this dog needs water to survive? Yes ma’am.

Does this dog needs air to breathe? Yes ma’am.

Can this dog reproduce? Yes ma’am.

Yes, just like the elephant earlier, this dog can

make thing just like themselves and we call it
puppy.

Since this dog needs food, air and water and

can reproduce, dog is now an example of Living thing.
what?

The elephant and dog are example of animal,

therefore all animals are example of living
things.

Do you understand?
Any question?

Let’s proceed.

Now I have a picture of a tree. Let’s see if this

tree is also a Living thing.

Does this tree need food to grow?

Every other tree and plants eat using their

roots, the food of a plant is nutrients coming
from the soil.

What does the plants use to eat?

Roots.
What is their food?
Nutrients coming from the soil.
Next, does this tree need water to survive?
Yes ma’am.
Yes, they also use their roots to drink.

What does the tree uses to drink?

Their roots.

Does this tree needs air to breathe?

Yes, but they don’t have their nose. So how do

you think they breathe? Yes ma’am.

Yes, in trees and plant breathing takes place

in leaves. By their leaves.

Where does the tree breathe?

Lastly, can this tree reproduce? Leaves.

Yes they can. But in different way as the Yes ma’am.

humans and animals do. So how?

Through cutting and seeds.

Are we clear?
Do you have any questions?

So what are the examples of Living Things?

Just remember the word H-A-T or H-A-P.

H-umans
A-nimals
T-rees, or

H-umans
A-nimals
P-lants

What are the examples of living things?

Humans, animals and trees or plants.

Now give me your own specific example of

living things found in your home.
(Pupils will give their own example of living
things)
Do you have questions?
If none we now procced to the next component
Which is the non-living thing

Now look at this,

What is this?

Is this a living thing?

Pencil.
How did you know?
No ma’am.
Yes, it doesn’t need food, water, air and
cannot reproduce. Meaning it is a non-living
Because it doesn’t need food, water, air and
thing.
cannot reproduce.
Non-living Things
- Non-living is used to describe things
which are not alive.

Checklist.

 All non-living things do not need to eat

food to grow.
 All non-living things do not need water
to survive.
 All non-living things do not need air to
breathe.
 All non-living things cannot reproduce.

How about this car?

Is this a non-living thing? Yes ma’am.
Why? Because it doesn’t need food, water, air and
cannot reproduce.
Very good. Also, non-living things, these are
the things which we use in our daily lives.

Can you now give me your own example of (Pupils will give their answers)
non-living things?

Fantastic!

C. GENERALIZATION
Living is used to describe a thing that is alive,
living things eat food to grow, need air to
breathe, need water to survive, and can
reproduce. While nonliving is used to describe
anything that is not alive. Non-living thing
doesn’t grow, doesn’t need air, doesn’t need
water to survive, and can’t reproduce.

Always remember whether something is living

or not we must appreciate and give
importance because above all God created all
things with love and we must also love God’s
creation.

Here is a video to get to know more about our

ecosystem and the 2 major components
*VIDEO

Now that you understand our lesson. Let’s

have an activity

D. APPLICATION
Flashcards: Identify if the one on the screen is
a Living or Non-Living thing. Thumbs up if it is
Living Thing and Thumbs down if it is a Non-
Living thing!

Puzzles: Complete the puzzle, tell us what is

on the puzzle, and categorize it as Living or
Non-Living and explain why you consider it as
living or non-living thing

IV. Evaluation

Name:____________________________________Date: ______________________________

Direction: Label the following. Write L if it is a living thing and N if it is a non-living thing.

___1. Panda ___ 6. Chair
