DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN SCIENCE III

I. Objectives:
At the end of the activity, 75% of the grade three pupils should be able to:
1. Identify the basic needs of humans, plants, and animals such as air, food, water,
and shelter.
2. Demonstrate understanding of the importance of the basic needs to humans,
plants, and animals.
3. Construct and differentiate ways of how do humans, plants, and animals get their
basic needs such as air, food, and water.

II. Subject matter

Topic: Basic Needs of Humans, Plants, and Animals
Materials: Notebooks, Drawing materials, Images, Video

Science Concepts:
1. Humans, plants, and animals are all living things.
2. All living things have their own basic needs to survive.
3. Humans, plants, and animals have common basic needs such as air,
food, and water.
4. Every living thing has a unique way of getting the basic needs for survival.
Science Process skills: Observing, Describing, Communicating

III. Procedure
Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity
A. Preparation
“Good morning, Class.” “Good morning, Teacher.”
“Let us pray first. Who wants to lead the
prayer?” (One student will lead the prayer)
“I’ll check the attendance. Say “present”
when your name is called.
B. Motivation (Engage)
“Do you have pets?” “Yes, Teacher”
“Do you have plants at home? “No, Teacher”

“Okay, for those who have pets, draw

one of your pets in your notebook. For
those who don’t, draw an imaginary pet. It
can be a dog, a cat, or any kind of animal.”
(Starts drawing)
Beside the drawing of your pet, draw any
kind of plants you have in your house, or
if none, you can just take a look at your
surroundings. Look outside the
classroom.

“Now, what do you give your pets to keep

them healthy and alive?”
Student 1: I give them food and water.
Student 2: I give them a place to stay.
I let them wander around.

How about the plants. What do you give

the plants to keep them alive, fresh, and
green? I water the plants.
I make sure that it receives heat from
the sun.
“Very good! Animals and plants have their
basic needs to survive. Just like us,
humans, we also have basic needs to
survive. Who can give an example of our
basic needs?” Student 3: We need food.
Student 4: We need shelter.
Student 5: Clothes.

Student 6: Water.
“Correct! Aside from those, we also need
air to survive because we cannot breathe
without air. What will happen if we cannot
breathe?” “We will die!”

“Yes, we will die. Living things like us,

animals, and plants have basic needs to
keep us alive.”

“So, in the drawings of your pet or

imaginary pet, and the plant, draw
examples of their basic needs around the
drawing “.

C. Lesson Proper
(Explore)
Now, I will group you into 3 and you are
free to choose your group leader from
the group. (Chooses a leader)

“I have here some pictures of examples

of living things. Each of you will pick
one.”

Group 1: A Sampaguita plant

Group 2: A boy
Group 3: A cat

“With your groupmates, list the basic

needs of the living thing that you picked.
And later, the reporter of the group will
explain why you consider them as basic
needs and why are they important.” (Perform the activity)

(Explain)
“Are you ready, Group 1?” “Yes, Teacher”

Please proceed. Group 1:

We picked the Sampaguita plant. Its

basic needs are water, heat from the
sun, air, and suitable soil. We consider
them as basic needs because water
helps the plant grow. The heat of the
sun provides nutrients to the plant so it
stays in color. The soil also gives
nutrients to the plant. And air because it
helps plants to breathe, to have the
energy to grow, and to make more
flowers. We think that those are the
best and simplest things that the

Thank you very much group 1. Let’s give

them a fireworks clap!

Group 2, you may now present your Group 2:

work. We picked a boy. His basic needs are
food, water, house, and clothes. The
food helps to avoid the boy from
starving so he won’t get sick and die.
The water helps him from feeling thirsty
and stomachache and headache. The

boy also needs a home to sleep and

rest. And the last is clothing because of
our clothes us from catching an illness
from the surroundings. It also covers
our body from the cold and hot
seasons. The food, water, house, and
clothes are important because it keeps
the boy healthy and strong.
“Thank you very much Group 2. Let’s
give them an angel clap!”

“To the last presenter please. Come in Group 3:

front Group 3.” We picked a cat. Its basic needs are
food, air, water, and shelter. The food
helps the cat to live longer and become
healthy. The air helps the cat to
breathe, just like us. Cats also need air
to breathe and smell fresh air because
we think that they enjoy it while walking
around the house. The shelter is also
important because cats are pets and we
should take care of them in our houses.
The shelter also keeps the cat safe from
bad animals and weather. The basic
needs of the cat are important for she
can live long and stay healthy.

“Okay! Thank you very much group 3.

Let’s give them a yehey clap!

Now, how do humans, plants, and just cook their food, and animals are
animals vary their ways of getting their either given food to eat or they gather
basic needs such as food, water and food through hunting. Humans and
air? animals need food to obtain energy
which they will be needing in their
everyday activities.
Humans, animals and plants all needs
air to breathe. However, for plants,
they don’t just need it to breathe but
also in making their food.
Lastly, plant’s roots absorb water
because it is needed in producing its
own food while animals and humans

needs water to clean their selves,

quench thirst and also, as an
ingredient in food making.

IV. Assignment

Make an observation in your surroundings of how the basic needs provide

help to humans, plants and animals. After that, make a poster showing your
observations.
For example, a duck drinking water from the pond.

(In the poster, draw only three. One for the humans, one for the animals and one for
the plants.)
