⑴ 비중 나타내기
「X out of Y」는 ‘Y 중에 X’라는 뜻으로 이때 X와 Y는 숫자를 나타낸다. 즉, 전체 Y 중에 X가 차지하는 비중을 나타낼 때 쓰는 표현이다.
•Twenty out of thirty people wanted to go camping. 30명 중 20명이 캠핑을 가고 싶어 했다.
•Three out of ten suffer from colds in the winter. 겨울에는 10명 중 3명이 감기로 고생한다.
⑵ 비율 나타내기
전체 중 일부가 차지하는 비율을 나타낼 때는 퍼센트(percent)를 사용하여 ‘…의 ~퍼센트’라는 뜻의 「~ percent of ...」로 나타낼 수 있
다.
•Ten percent of the students can speak Chinese. 학생들 중 10%가 중국어를 할 수 있다.
•Forests cover about thirty percent of the world’s land area. 숲은 전세계 육지 면적의 30%를 차지한다.
분수 표현하기
분수에서 분자는 기수(one, two, three, four ...)로, 분모는 서수(third, fourth, fifth ...)로 표현하며, 분자가 2 이상이면 분모는 복수형으로
써야 한다. 분모가 2일 경우에는 half, 4일 경우에는 quarter를 사용하기도 하며, 분자가 1일 때 one 대신 a를 쓸 수도 있다.

⑴ 이해 점검하기
상대방이 자신의 말을 이해했는지를 점검할 때는 ‘내 말이 무슨 뜻인지 알겠니?’라는 뜻의 ‘Do you see what I mean?’을 쓸 수 있다.
이와 같은 표현으로는 ‘Do you get what I mean?’, ‘Do you understand?’, ‘Is this clear?’ 등이 있다.
