Objectives for
learning
Learn the basics of the timer delay relay and
timer switches to understand the main
types, how they work and where we use
them.
TIMING RELAYS
A sort of device that uses an
electromagnet to regulate the flow of
electricity in a circuit.

OF A RELAY
WHAT IS RELAY?
• It is an electrically operated
switch.
• Traditionally, relays use an
electromagnet to mechanically
operate the switch.
• Newer versions, use
electronics such as solid-state
relays.
MAIN PARTS
OF A RELAY
Main Parts
PRIMARY CIRCUIT
• It provides the control signal to
operate the relay.
• This could be controlled by a
manual switch, thermostat, or
some other type of sensor.
• It is generally connected to a
low voltage DC supplier.
SECONDARY CIRCUIT
• It is connected to the load
which is being controlled.
• A load is any device that
will consume electricity
such as a fan, pump,
compressor or even a light
bulb.
TYPES OF
RELAY
NORMALLY OPEN
• The load of the secondary
side is off until the circuit is
complete on the primary.
• We could use this for
example to control a fan by
using a bimetallic strip as a
switch on the primary side.
Normally Open
Normally Open
NORMALLY CLOSED
• The load on the secondary circuit
is normally on.
• When the current is passed
through the primary circuit the
electromagnetic field causes the
armature to push away which
disconnects the contactor and
breaks the circuit. Also, this cuts
the supply of electricity to the load.

SOLID-STATE RELAY
• It is similar in principle to
electromechanical relays, but
has no moving parts.
• It uses electrical and optical
properties of semiconductors
to perform its input and output
isolation as well as switching
functions.
SOLID STATE RELAYS
• It has no moving parts
• Uses electrical and optical
properties of semi conductors

LATCHING RELAY
• It is a relay that is picked up
under the influence of a single
current pulse in the winding
and maintains this state when
the pulse stops affecting it, that
is when it is locked. Concluding
that it functions as a storage
system.
Latching Relay
DOUBLE OR SINGLE
POLE
• Relays can have single or double
poles.
• The term pole refers to the
number of contacts switched
when the relay is energized. This
allows more than one secondary
circuit to be energized from a
single primary circuit.
Double Pole
DOUBLE OR SINGLE
THROW RELAY
• The term throws refers to the
number of contacts or connection
points.
• A double throw relay combines a
normally open and a normally closed
circuit. This is also called a
changeover relay as it alternates, or
changes, between two secondary
circuits.
DOUBLE POLE, DOUBLE
THROW RELAY
• It is used to control
two states on two
separate circuits.

SUPPRESSOR
DIODES • It is use to prevent
or supress high
(FLYWHEEL voltage spikes that
DIODES) can damage the
circuits. Since it only
allows tha current to
flow in one direction.

TIME DELAY RELAY
• Simply control relays with a time delay
built in.
• Their purpose is to control an event
based on time.

RELAY
DELAY OFF
• Type of time delay relay that opens or closes
the circuit as soon as power is removed.
• OFF-delay timers are often referred to as
“delay on break” timers.

led from turning off?
