CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM

A. Background of the Study

Social media has become an inevitable and inseparable part of modern life,

and it has been revealed that more than half of the global population use social media.

In other words, 3.96 billion people use social media today, accounting for roughly 51

percent of the global population. Furthermore, it has been estimated that more than 1

million people have started using social media over the past 12 months, and it is

almost 12 new users every second. This suggests that the number of social media

users increases faster today that at the beginning of the year 2020. Thus, it is not

difficult to understand the extent of the impact the social media brings to our lives.

Various studies have shown that the social have a significant impact on peoples’

social life, professional life as well as personal life. However, referring to those

studies, one can not exactly say whether social media is good or bad. Effects of social

media have been identified both as positive and negative in different studies.
Tiktok is a popular social media app that allows user to create, watch, and

share 15 seconds videos shot on mobile devices or webcams. With its personalized

feeds of quirky short videos set to music and sound effects, the app is notable for its

addictive quality and high levels of engagement.

The TikTok app is accessible for Android and Apple devices, lets users create

short videos to perform various popular songs. These so- called “Lip-sync-Videos”

may be exchanged with other users, downloaded for personal use, commented on,

and, of course, accompanied by a “Like.” Not only do people contribute playback

videos to TikTok, but they also consume a significant number of video material

(Wodjan et al., 2021) The excessive use of TikTok often leads to addiction and time

wastage which is a concern in academic performance.

Social media has developed into a potent and beneficial instrument that allows

contemporary society to engage. However, social networking platforms like TikTok

are becoming very addicting for their users (Yahya et al., 2020). The addictive nature

may significantly interfere with user’s everyday commitments in the real world,

necessitating a recovery process to overcome the tremendous addiction. Today, there

are growing concerns over social media addiction that reduce student’s academic

attention span that can also affect their academic performance. This study focuses on

Grade 11 students from AMA with TikTok addiction, discussing how and why such

habits impact the academic performance in school and if using tiktok contributes in

improving their academic performance.

As global web index reveals, only a small fraction of each platform’s user

base is unique, and many of the platforms’ audiences overlap. For example, 95
percent of Facebook users report that they use at least one other social media

platform. TikTok is one of the most popular music video social platforms, which

currently has 800 million active users in 155 countries. It has become the most

popular short music video app in the world.

Lewin’s change models can be applied to understand how student’s

behavioral patterns can become an addiction and why using TikTok in class can lead

to lower academic performance. This habit likely to affect the student’s time

management abilities, leading to reduced focus on academics.

Social media can emotionally impact individuals who rely on the platforms

for social approval. Studies have shown that TikTok is causing various issues,

including addiction, in kids and teenagers (Wojdan et al., 2021)

B. Statement of the Problem

H. Related Theories

The way humans socialize and communicate is affected by the existence

social media. Similarly, education is also undergoing transformation due to social

media. Blended or online learning is more commonly used. Further, the spread of

the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated this transformation. This paper describes

an educational innovation in which TikTok (a social media platform that allows

for creating and sharing video of which the users have increased significantly

during the COVID-19 pandemic) was used as learning media. A total of 75

pharmacy students participated in this study. The data were analyzed using

independent-sample t-test. The results revealed that TikTok brought a significant

effect on academic achievement. The students also showed a positive response to

the use of TikTok, in which 84% of the students found it easier to understand to

course materials using TikTok, 80% of the students had better motivation to study

course materials. This way, it is recommended to use TikTok as a teaching-

learning tool regarding the fact that this platform can help improve the learning

achievement of pharmacy students. (AIP Conf. 2022)

Online resources also enable students who are struggling to receive help

with assignments and projects they are stressed about. Technology is a great

subject to write about, with essays about technology being an exciting topic for

young students to investigate. Besides, students cannot imagine their lives without

social media and TikTok is a great way to teach and learn about the world around

them. Students’ thoughts about technology in education prove modern trends,

especially TikTok to be efficient tools for learning engagement and development.

Let’s dive into how exactly TikTok influences modern educational practices.

While it may not seem so from first impressions, TikTok is an excellent

video platform for education. Maybe you have seen some of the funny teacher

videos for professional development on the app? Many online influencers now

use this platform to share educational, business and career lessons. It’s not just all

silly videos featuring your favorite celebrities. If you delve deeper into the

platform, you’ll find great TikTok ideas to help you with college writing

assignments.

With the challenges around the world this year, and many students

studying from home, TikTok and other social media sites have allowed teachers

and students to remain connected. Having a physical connection with teachers is

essential for accountability and promoting engagement among students. Without

feeling like their teacher is still present, it’s easy for students to disconnect from

their studies. Some teachers have turned to social media for lessons, challenges

and assignments for their students. By adapting to the technology students love to

use in their free time, teachers find their engagement levels with work are higher.

While TikTok and other similar social media sites can be a huge

distraction when used at inappropriate times, they are a great educational

resource. By keeping lesson plans relevant to our current world, teachers are more

likely to engage their students and keep them interested in education. With the

challenges we are currently facing, and many students still learning at home,

TikTok and related sites are a fun way to still feel connected to your classmates.
Next time you’re on the app, take a look at some of the fun challenges that

encourage growth and learning in an interactive manner. (StudyMoose 2020)

YouTube and TikTok have gained increasing recognition as social

network sites to support online knowledge acquisition, sharing, and application

via social media platforms in the medical field. This study examines which aspect

of TikTok and YouTube stimulates doctors, nurses, and any other YouTube and

TikTok in the medical setting, to rely on them as sources of knowledge

acquisition and sharing to keep their medical repertoire updated. A hybrid model

is designed to investigate users’ acceptance of YouTube and TikTok as social

media platforms. The model focuses on four main external factors: content

richness, innovativeness, satisfaction, and enjoyment. These factors are connected

with two TAM constructs which are perceived ease of use and perceived

usefulness. The results have shown that both YouTube and TikTok are affected

by PEOU, PU, personal innovativeness, flow theory, and content richness. Both

social media networks provide up-to-date sources described as useful, enjoyable,

and relevant. Nevertheless, the comparative results have shown that YouTube has

deeply influenced users’ medical perception and knowledge compared to TikTok.

It is created for the very mere purpose of socialization and self-expression. In

contrast, YouTube is used for educational and non-educational purposes due to

the type of uploaded content and time management. Therefore, TikTok developers

and influencers should initiate highly specialized videos and create content that

raises awareness of medical field issues. (Growing Science 2021)

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents the related literature and studies after the intensive and in

depth, rummage done by the researchers. The related studies and related literature affirm

in this chapter corresponded the ideas, concepts, generalizations, and some development

related to the study starting up from the past to the present. This will serve as a guide to

the researchers in building this project. Moreover, it gives information about the methods

used in similar studies and enumerates findings from previous studies that may support

this present study. These reviewed articles were derived from various websites, articles,

memos, books, journals, and magazines. The information gathered has helped the

researcher in conducting their studies. Below are related foreign and local literatures that

the researchers have used as based of the study.

A. Review of Related Literature

FOREIGN LITERATURE
According to Febranti et al. (2022) The way humans socialize and communicate

is affected by the existence of social media. Similarly, education is also undergoing

transformation due to social media. Blended or online learning is more commonly used.

A total of 75 pharmacy students participated in this study. The results revealed that

TikTok brought a significant effect on academic achievement.

Another literature by Yao et al. (2022) in Psychology The addiction behavior of

short-form video app TikTok: The information quality and system quality perspective

TikTok has one of the most advanced algorithm systems and is the most addictive as

compared to other social media platforms. While research on social media addiction is

abundant, we know much less about how the TikTok information system environment

affects users’ internal states of enjoyment, concentration, and time distortion (which

scholars define as the flow experience), which in turn influences their addiction behavior.

According to Mekler, Audrey (2021) TikTok is an app that allows someone to

make dancing or lifestyle videos, and it has become increasingly popular the past couple

of years, especially to students. But does that mean that this app poses a challenge to

students paying attention in class and getting their schoolwork done? A study was

conducted and the results showed that the more time participants spent on TikTok each

day, the more they became distracted on TikTok when they were trying to pay attention

in class and complete schoolwork. Moreover, these findings show that TikTok can impact

students’ abilities to be able to pay attention in class and get their schoolwork done, so

students have the possibility of doing worse in a class if they have and use the app

TikTok.
According to Adnan and Ismail (2021) highlighted that Tiktok could be used as

comprehensive tool for improving English second language (ESL) students’ listening

skills. Learning English via Tiktok, which delivers interactive listening, is believed to

engage students in tasks that demand them to negotiate meaning and immerse them in

realistic and meaningful dialogue. Tiktok presents words and visuals at the same time.

Herath and Hearth (2020) explored that watching TikTok videos has a negative

influence on the students as they get addicted to it. Moreover, the researchers stated that

more time spent on TikTok results in the poor academic performance of the students;

hence, the students should keep time factor into consideration when using the application.

The findings showed that usage of social media apps by the students have both positive

and negative outcomes. However, this is heavily relied on the time of using social media,

those who spend more time using these apps have poor academic performance.

According to Lictawa et al. (2022) Young people use the app to express

themselves through singing, dancing, comedy, and lip-syncing, and it allows them to

make videos and share them with others. Various teachers have adopted this application

as a means of disseminating information. Whether we're talking about teachers, they all

have the ability to disseminate material online by generating short films. TikTok’s

contribution to knowledge transmission is the content categories from which users can

watch videos. Furthermore, a video added to the educational field is viewed through the

platform not only by its own students but also by students from other regions, schools,

and users who are not students but members of society, thus broadening the audience.

Another literature by Lobo et. al. (2022). TikTok has been widely used by

Filipino youths, most especially students, for entertainment purposes in between or after

class as pass time activity. Previous, studies were already conducted in regards to the

positive and negative effect of using TikTok to students' academic performance.

Based on the study by Alegra (2022) Anything that’s used excessively and

irresponsibly can and will cause harm. This includes mobile applications and social

media platforms. Social media apps like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Tiktok are

mostly used for connecting with family and friends, but the majority of users also use

them as sources of news and entertainment.

According to C. Diol (2020) Tiktok Influence on teenagers and young adult

students the use of Tiktok had a very little negative impact on teenagers and young adult

students. In his study the common usages of the Application Tiktok, C. Diol has also

been able to map out the spread of Tiktok over the past 3 years and how it has become a

significant participant in the role of Influencers, creating and entrepreneurial possibility

with its growth.

Furthermore Co (2020) The Chinese men who created it succeeded in attracting

the attention of young people who had long since stopped using facebook. Facebook,

Twitter, and Instagram all seem outdated in comparison to Tiktok.

B. Review of Related Studies

FOERIGN LITERATURE

On the study conducted by Murtaza, G. (2023) Time management and distractions

are two major issues that might arise while using social media. Students who spend too

much time on social media may struggle with time management and become less

productive in the classroom. Student are easily distracted from their studies by constant

alerts, endless scrolling feeds, and the appeal of viral material.

According to Niyomsuk and Polyiem (2022) admitted that integrating Tiktok in

teaching Thai traditional dancing art improved the Grade 7 students learning

performance. Tiktok has created satisfying traditional dancing art improved the Grade 7

students learning performance. Tiktok has created satisfying learning experiences among

students.
Another study by Putri (2021) used Tiktok during the pandemic for her dance

course class. She aimed to provide online learning innovations in her course. It was found

that the Tiktok application can be used as a learning medium to enhance the students’

creativity and also develop their digitalization skills during a pandemic. It also found that

the students are able to use technology in learning dance, express their creative dance

ideas in digital form and increase the power of exploration and improvisation in

creativity.

According to the study of Owusu et al. (2018) it was revealed that the use of

social media had affected the academic performance of their respondents negatively and

further, confirmed that there was a strong positive relationship between the use of social

media and academic performance. Their study further revealed that most of their

respondents use social media sites to chat rather than for academic purpose.

Another related study by Mensah and Nizam (2016) concluded in their study that

social media platforms have a significant impact on students’ academic performance in

Malaysia tertiary institutions. Nevertheless, among the six variables used in their study,

time appropriateness and health addiction have a stronger significant influence on

students’ academic performance. This is because time management plays an essential role

in determining the success and failure of an individual.

LOCAL LITERATURE

According to Sajonla and Kethelle (2022), To thrive in the current world,

educators must develop abilities in integrating technology into classroom activities in

order to make teachings more relevant and enjoyable. There are several new applications

that educators may employ as educational tools. Social media, particularly popular youth-

focused sites such as TikTok, may provide an invaluable insight into young people's

lives, including their impressions of online learning.

According to Ngilangil K. (2022) Tiktok is very popular among the young and

has become for many a mode of free and creative self-expression. Many people use

Tiktok, but most users are teens, and it has become a celebrity start-off.

Based on the study conducted by Cagas R. (2022) This study shows that English

teachers should use the Tiktok app to make short videos to help their speaking and

grammar skills. Students can improve speaking and grammar skills because of Tiktok

application.

Salasaac C. (2022) Tiktok has been one of the most used Social Networking

Services (SNS) worldwide. It has grown into a platform with a broad range of content,

including sports, fashion, performing arts, and education, encouraging learners to join the

community.
CHAPTER III

RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODOLOGY

This chapter describes the method of research design, population and sampling

technique, the Instrument used, and the data gathering procedures, and statistical tool and

treatment used.

A. Research Design

A quantitative study is used in this study. It is subjective report which made utilization

of a phenomenological way to deal with accumulating important information. This

approach concerns about understanding and interpreting the meaning that the participants

provide to their everyday lives. The quantitative approach centers around the

characteristics of human conduct. The point of such method is not to generalize but to

comprehend and interpret the meanings and intentions that underlie everyday human

activities. The quantitative design manages information that is principally verbal and gets

significance from the participants point of view and also expects to comprehend the

meaning that individuals append to their daily experience. A quantitative approach is the

most appropriate approach for this study; the reason is because of its data collection

procedure. This quantitative study seeks, to understand the impact of tiktok app on

academic performances and how the application affects to their academic performances.

According to Marshall and Rosman (1995) further elaborated that if the research study

aims to uncover the unexpected and to explore new avenues, the most suited approach is

the quantitative approach.

B. Population and Sampling Technique

The respondents of this research are Grade-11 students of ACLC College of Iriga

Inc., located at San Miguel, Iriga City. The respondents are from the school year 2023-
2024. The 150 respondents will encounter through the questionnaires that will be taken in

this study.

The research sampling technique that will be used in this study is convenience

sampling technique, wherein the respondents who are convenient to the researcher. There

is no pattern whatsoever in acquiring these respondents-they may be recruited merely

asking people who are present in the said school, which will represent the population.

C. Research Instrument

In this study, the researcher will be using questionnaire with three (3) parts. The

questionnaire is a set of orderly arranged questions carefully prepared to answer by

individual student designed to collect facts and information.

Part I of the questionnaire is about the profile of the respondents to determine

their age, gender, and strand

Part II of the questionnaire is about positive and negative effects of Tiktok app on

Grade 11 students at ACLC College of Iriga City, this open-ended question seeks to

collect data regarding the perceived positive and negative effects of Tiktok usage on

academic performance and overall well-being.

Part III of the research instrument focuses on understanding the self-perception of

Tiktok usage among Grade 11 students of ACLC College of Iriga City. The questions

are designed to explore the students’ perspective on both positive and negative effects

associated with their engagement with the Tiktok app.

This research instrument is designed to capture a comprehensive view of Tiktok

usage and its impact on Grade 11 students at ACLC College of Iriga City, Inc.,

covering demographic information, usage patterns, effects and coping strategies.

D. Data Gathering and Procedures

To conduct the impact of TikTok app usage on academic performance among

Grade 11 senior high students at ACLC College of Iriga, Inc., we will select a random

sample of participants, obtain informed consent, and administer a carefully designed

questionnaire that includes questions about TikTok usage. We will pilot test the

questionnaire, collect data on academic performance through academic records, and

gather self-reported TikTok usage data. Subsequently, we will use statistical analysis to

assess the relationship between TikTok app usage and academic performance. Ethical

considerations, such as ensuring participant anonymity and confidentiality, will be
