SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

This study focuses on exploring the impact of TikTok

Application Software on the academic performance of Grade
12 General Academic Strand students at Catarman National
High School. It specifically excludes other strands (STEM,
ABM, HUMSS, TVL) in the school and extends only to this
specific institution, excluding other schools offering the
General Academic Strand.
THEORITICAL FRAMEWORK

This study, referencing research by Storthanh, Mitchum, and Yehnert

(2015), explores the potential distraction posed by phones and notifications,
particularly in the context of TikTok usage among senior high school students.
The study suggests that frequent engagement with TikTok negatively influences
academic performance, impacting grades and note-taking. It emphasizes the
importance of setting limits to avoid distractions and potential failures in
academic activities. Additionally, it raises concerns about privacy risks and
mental health implications associated with excessive TikTok use, emphasizing the
need for responsible online behavior and balanced life activities. The study
identifies a pattern where increased TikTok usage correlates with heightened
distractions in various aspects of students' lives.
CONCEPTUAL

The conceptual framework for the study explores the effects of TikTok on the
academic performance of Grade 12 General Academic Strand students in Catarman
National High School. Key variables include the independent ones—gender, age, and
talent—measured through self-report surveys or mobile device tracking, and the
dependent variable—academic performance—measured by grades and test scores.
Mediating variables like self-regulated learning and sleep quality are considered. Higher
self-regulated learning may mitigate negative TikTok effects, while poor sleep quality
could impact academic performance. Moderating variables like gender, age, and
socioeconomic status are also factored in, acknowledging potential differences in
susceptibility to TikTok's impact. This framework aims to provide a comprehensive
understanding of TikTok's potential influence on academic performance in high school
students.

REVIEW OF LITERATURE

Wang, Chen, Li, and Wang's Study:

The study explores the relationship between TikTok use and the mental
health of Chinese high school students during the COVID-19 pandemic. It
highlights TikTok's popularity and unique features, emphasizing its potential
impact on mental health. The findings suggest that increased TikTok use is
associated with higher levels of anxiety and depression among students. However,
the study's cross-sectional design limits causal conclusions, and the focus on
Chinese students may affect generalizability. Despite these limitations, the study
raises awareness of mental health risks during stressful periods, encouraging
further research on TikTok's implications in various cultural contexts and age
groups.
Faelens, De Pauw, and Cauberghe's Study:
The study investigates the effects of TikTok videos promoting unrealistic
beauty standards on young women's body image and mental health. It emphasizes
the need to scrutinize such content on social media platforms and advocates for
proactive measures to regulate harmful beauty ideals. The study's strength lies in its
specific focus on a popular social media platform, revealing the association between
exposure to TikTok videos and increased body dissatisfaction and depression
symptoms among young women. However, limitations include a focus on young
women and a lack of exploration into potential moderating factors or protective
interventions. The cross-sectional design calls for future longitudinal studies to
establish causal relationships. In summary, the study underscores the importance of
addressing the potential harm of TikTok content promoting unrealistic beauty
standards and contributes to the literature on the psychological impact of social
media.
The study utilizes a descriptive correlation design to investigate the
connection between TikTok application software usage and the academic
performance of Grade 12 General Academic Strand students at Catarman National
High School. It seeks to depict the prevalence of TikTok usage among students and
analyze whether a correlation exists between the time spent on TikTok and their
academic achievements. Through this design, the study aims to offer a detailed
description of students' TikTok usage patterns and assess its potential influence on
their academic performance.
