Introduction

In recent years, few if any environmental issues have

received as much global attention as ‘tropical defor-
estation’. Within developing countries there is a grow-
ing awareness among educated elites of the many in-
terrelationships between deforestation and land
degradation, floods, drought, famine and rural
poverty. Popular movements in several countries by
indigenous and other groups negatively affected by
deforestation processes have contributed to political
concerns about deforestation issues. So too have per-
ceptions of many among intellectual, socia-economic
and political leaders that rapid deforestation may be
prejudicing their countries’ possibilities for sustainable
development in the future while its short-term benefits
accrue mostly to corporate and consumer interests in
the North and to a few small minorities in the South.

The best ways to safeguard, manage, and utilize the

remaining forests in emerging nations are a topic of
ongoing discussion among conservationists. Defor-
estation is the widespread removal of trees from
forests. Our environment has always been under risk
from deforestation. But many people are still engaging

in this harmful activity. Deforestation is also contribut-

ing to an ecological imbalance. However, some self-
centered individuals must line their pockets. They
therefore don't think twice about it. As a result, the gov-
ernment is attempting to take preventative measures to limit
environmental damage.

The main purpose of deforestation is to increase the land area.

Also, this land area is to set up new industries. And, this all is
because of the increase in population. As the population in-
creases the demand for products also increase. So rich busi-
nessmen set up these industries to increase profit.

According to Nunez,C. (2022) trees invariably con-

tain a significant part of the solution as the globe
strives to decrease the speed of climate change,
protect species, and support more than eight billion
people. However, massive tree killing, or deforesta-
tion, occurs, sacrificing the long-term advantages
of standing trees for the immediate gain of fuel and
building materials.

The fact that trees absorb both the heat-trap-

ping greenhouse gases produced by human activity

and the carbon dioxide we exhale is just one of the

many reasons why we need them. These gases

cause an increase in global warming, which is now

more commonly referred to as climate change.

EFFECTS OF DEFORESTATION

- Deforestation can have a variety of nega-

tive effects for Indigenous people, including

climate change, desertification, soil erosion,

less crops, flooding, and a rise in green-

house gases in the atmosphere.

How to prevent deforestation

1.Plant a tree- The most straightforward personal strategy

to fight against deforestation is to plant a tree. Planting a tree

could be considered a lifelong investment into the environment

and your good mental health.

2.Use less paper- Globally, 40 percent of all timber is

used to make paper products, and the demand for paper in-

creases by two to three percent every year. This means that the

paper industry is still consuming more and more trees.

3.Recycle paper and cardboard- Did you know that one

ton (2,000 pounds) of paper put to recycle prevents the cutting of

17 trees? These 17 trees then sequester around 250 pounds of

carbon dioxide from the air every single year.

4.Use recycled products- You may have noticed a little la-

bel “made from recycled paper” on your new notebook. The

same label can be found on many other daily use items like

books, paper bags, egg packaging and even toilet paper.

By choosing items made from recycled paper,

you make a conscious effort to lower the demand
for more timber.

5.Don’t buy products containing palm oil-

While a small amount of palm oil may be sustain-
ably produced, the majority comes from recently
cleared land. Palm oil production has become one
of the main causes of tropical rainforest destruc-
tion around the world today.

About 30% of the world's territory still con-

tains forests, yet they are vanishing at a
startling rate. The Food and Agriculture Or-
ganization of the United Nations estimates
that since 1990, the globe has lost more
than 420 million hectares, or almost one bil-
lion acres, of forest, mostly in Africa and
South America. Over the past 50 years, over
17 percent of the Amazonian rainforest has
been lost, and losses have recently in-
creased. According to Amazon Conservation,
there was an increase in destruction of 21
percent in 2020, a loss the size of Israel.

More than half of all deforestation is caused

by farming, the grazing of cattle, mining, and
drilling. The remainder is caused by urban-
ization, wildfires, and, to a lesser extent,
forestry practices. Forests are cleared in
Malaysia and Indonesia to make place for
the production of palm oil, which is utilized
in products ranging from shampoo to saltine
crackers. The primary culprits in the Amazon
are cattle raising and soy plantations.

The world's logging operations, which pro-

duce wood and paper products, also cut
down countless trees annually. Roads are
also built by loggers, some of whom are do-
ing so illegally, to access increasingly iso-
lated forests, which results in further de-
struction. As land is developed for resi-
dences as a result of expanding urban
sprawl, forests are also being cut down.

The world's logging operations, which pro-

duce wood and paper products, also cut
down countless trees annually. In order to
access the more remote forests, loggers—
some of whom are doing so illegally—also
construct roads, which leads to more de-
struction. As a result of growing urban ex-
pansion, land is being developed for homes
while also being cleared for new woods.

Deforestation is not always done on pur-

pose. Some of the causes include both natu-
ral and human-made ones, such as overgraz-
ing and wildfires, which may stunt the
growth of young trees.

CONCLUSION

There can be no doubt about the existence of plants

in the forest. We must all work together to stop deforesta-

tion if we want to assure a more environmentally friendly

world.

One of the environmental issues that has plagued our

planet the most is deforestation. Maintaining the green

cover is crucial now more than ever since failure to do so

could threaten the continuation of life as we know it. We

receive the oxygen we need to breathe thanks to the

presence of green trees.

Up to 40% of the planet's land is degraded, di-

rectly affecting half of humanity, threatening
roughly half of global GDP (USD 44 trillion).

Land degradation both contributes to and is a conse-

quence of rural poverty and vulnerability. Poor rural

households in developing nations are disproportionately

affected by the immediate effects of land degradation,

which include losses in soil organic content, nutrients,

and water storage and control, which in turn result in a

loss of productive capacity and wildlife habitat. In the low

input/low output agricultural systems typical of undevel-

oped rural areas, such as sub-Saharan Africa, nutrient in-

puts to the soil are nearly always lower than outputs.

Therefore, land degradation, in particular, increases

the risk of drought, but it can also lead to climate change,

which has the effect of raising local average (mean) tem-

peratures and lowering local average precipitation.
