Title of research:

Research on Energy Storage Technologies to Build Sustainable Energy Systems

Objectives:
 To indicate the value of energy storage technologies to regional energy security and
economic growth
 To promote the application of energy storage to build sustainable energy systems
 To strengthen industry exchange and bring a higher level of attention to the value of energy
storage as well as accelerate the development of industrial policies and jointly promote the
application of energy storage to build sustainable energy systems

Abstract
This project seeks to demonstrate how energy storage technologies can be used to build
sustainable energy systems, address energy insecurity, and improve the integration of renewable
energy sources. Through desk research, interviews, site visits, the project will result in a final
report describing suitable technology solutions, outlining business models, and drafting policy
recommendations. The project aims to inform stakeholders about the potential benefits of energy
storage, and facilitate connections between policymakers, industry leaders, and researchers to
promote understanding and deployment of energy storage systems that provide energy resilience
and sustainable development.

Relevance
As more and more demonstration projects are developed all over the globe, the realizable
capabilities of energy storage are gradually becoming clearer. The functionality and effects of
energy storage are also becoming recognized to energy industry. Energy storage are key
supporting technologies in application scenarios like frequency regulation, distributed generation
and micro-grid, renewable energy integration, demand response etc. Energy storage has been
proven to improve energy resilience and support sustainable energy development by providing
services to ensure grid stability, by facilitating local energy self- supply, and by increasing the
share of renewables in the energy mix.
In the 2015 APEC Energy Ministerial meeting, APEC energy leaders reaffirmed the importance
of energy resilience and of reducing aggregate energy intensity. Energy storage will play more
important role in building sustainable energy systems in the APEC region.
This project seeks to produce research and policy recommendations that enable APEC member
economies to learn about the value of energy storage, and encourage them to use energy storage
technologies to build sustainable and efficient energy systems, and help them to overcome the
difficulties remain before energy storage can truly be considered commercialized. It has the
added benefits of supporting innovation, human capacity, cooperation, and trade in energy
technologies.
This project will fall under Rank 2 – Sustainable Growth, Innovative Growth, Secure Growth.
Energy storage technologies have been found to be crucial to the improvement of energy
resiliency. By integrating energy storage into their energy structures, member economies can
build more secure and more stable energy systems, promote the commercialization of leading
technologies, and transition to energy systems that reduce urban pollutants that harm human
health and cause climate change.
Work Plan
1) Planning –
2) Information collection and Interviews
Research will be carried out as planned. Information collection, desk study will be undertaken to
investigate the current state of energy storage industry. 10-15 experts and government officials
from energy storage companies, research institutions, universities, government agencies, and
renewable energy enterprises will be invited for interviews.
Their opinions and recommendations will be gathered and summarized on how to use energy
storage to build sustainable energy systems
3) Site visits
The research team will undertake site visits to typical energy storage demonstrations. The
purpose of these on-site investigations is to share knowledge and collect data from operating
demonstrations. It will help understanding the role and value of energy storage systems in
different applications
4) Final report
Final project report will consolidate the key findings of interviews, site visits, and desk study.
The greatest value of the report will be the in-depth research on how energy storage technology
can be used to build sustainable energy systems, address energy insecurity, and improve the
integration of renewable energy sources.

Summary

This project seeks to demonstrate how energy storage technology can be used to build sustainable
energy systems, address energy insecurity, and improve the integration of renewable energy
sources. Through desk research, interviews, site visits, and stakeholder input, the project will
result in a final report describing suitable technology solutions, outlining business models, and
drafting policy recommendations. The project aims to inform stakeholders about the potential
benefits of energy storage, and facilitate connections between policymakers, industry leaders, and
researchers to promote understanding and deployment of energy storage systems that provide
energy resilience and sustainable development.
