ASSIGNMENT 1
Heather Collins – 14016028

Question 1:
1.1) Kinetic Energy is the energy an objects has because it is in motion, for example walking or running
around, or the earth revolving around the sun.
Potential Energy is the energy that is stored within an object, due to the object’s position,
arrangement or state. For example, water that is behind a dam, or a child at the top of a slide.

1.2) Energy is defined as the amount of work that can be performed by force.
Power is defined as the rate at which the work is performed or done.

1.3) Kinetic energy is measured in Joules (J).

1
𝐾 = 2 𝑚. 𝑉 2 m = Mass of body (kg)
V = Velocity of body (m/s)

Potential energy is also measured in Joules (J).

𝑃 = 𝑚. 𝑔. ℎ m = Mass of body (kg)

g = acceleration due to gravity (9.8𝑚/𝑠 2 )
h = height (m)

Question 2:
a) F = m.g
= 75 x 9.8
= 735N

F=µxN
= 0,3 x 735
= 220,5N

b) W = F x distance
= 220,5 x 100m
= 22050 J
= 22,05 kJ

𝑊
c) 𝑃 = 𝑇
22050
=
120
= 183,75 𝐽/𝑠
Question 3:
a) Distance = time x speed
75𝑥1000
= (20x60) x ( 60𝑥60
)
= 1200 x 20.83
= 24996 m

W = F x distance
= 800N x 24996m
= 19 996 800 J

(i) = 19,9968 MJ
19,9968
(ii) =
3,6
= 5,55 kWh

𝑊
b) 𝑃 = 𝑇
19,9968 × 106 𝐽
= 20 × 60
= 16 664 𝑊 𝑜𝑟 16,664 𝑘𝑊
