Final Capstone Project Reflection Questions

(Please give specific detailed answers.)

1. In the process of completing your Capstone Project, what did you learn about your subject? What did
you learn about your skill set? What did you learn about yourself?
My capstone from the beginning was about researching and creating recipes to a specific situation that would
benefit my community. And due to me being in grade 12 I chose my community consisting of students
pursuing higher education. I want to go into food science and perhaps become a dietician as I like
understanding how the food we eat interacts with our bodies and affects our lives. When doing research for
my capstone I solidified this about myself. I enjoyed having to do research, especially “professional research”,
meaning using sources that are peer reviewed. I got to expand the knowledge I already had and when it made
me feel happy instead of annoyance for more work I felt more confident in my career choice. By the end when
I had a greater knowledge pool to keep in the back of my mind I knew I had researched my subject very
thoroughly. Another big part of this project was the editing skills I needed. From filming the recipes to creating
the recipe pages on my website. I greatly underestimated the amount of skill it would take to create my
website. When I came to this portion I was very stressed because it all seemed above my skill level. However I
learned I am capable of using and understanding technology. Especially ones that I’m unfamiliar with. In the
end I’m proud of how my website turned out and the skills of editing I developed
2. How is your project relevant to you? How is it relevant to the school? How is it relevant to the
community?
My website has the purpose of being relevant to collage students living in a dorm who wanted a quick easy
recipe. This connects to myself, the school and to the community. The main factor being higher education is a
route a lot of people will be taking/already taking, in my community as there is a large youth population. My
website would have some benefit to those who are living in a dorm and have to cook for themselves. This
benefit extends to me as I am also one of the people who will be living in a dorm soon. Additionally my project
ties into the career I wish to pursue; dietician..
3. What impact did your Capstone have on you?
There aren’t many opportunities in school to do assignments related to even food science in general so it was
exciting to turn my Capstone into that. I got to have a taste as to what I might be doing in the future. The
Capstone was also the first long time project I had in awhile thus I had to use my time management skills to
compete it on time. I kept multiple trackers to plan out my time. I’m still not the best at it but I managed to
hand in my product in on time which I’m proud of. I don’t have very many projects to look back on in high
school as I did few so I’m happy to add the capstone to my collection.
4. What aspects of your project are you most proud of?
When I originally started thinking about my project I was focusing more on the research and creating recipes.
Not so much creating a website. I assumed it would be easy but when getting to that stage it was more work
than I had thought. Work in an area I was never comfortable. I remember in the planning stages thinking to
myself; “I’m not doing anything involving tech and software”. Yet here I was. My website ended up looking
good and I’m most proud of that as I had to do spend a lot of time doing trial and error leaning how to use
Tevini
software’s. Specifically in my recipe page I got to lay it out as if it was a real cooking blog. It made it feel more
real.
5. What was a difficulty you encountered while researching your Capstone project? How were you able to
overcome those obstacles?
The biggest obstacle was that when I was taking the pictures for my meals it was incredibly difficult to get
shots that looked nice. I already had a filming fail as my house isn’t structured in way where there is nice
lighting. Not being able to film any of my recipes was my biggest setback. I had to revision my Capstone
now. I had to settle with taking pictures which wasn’t ideal for me as I worried the target audience I had
wouldn’t be receptive to my website anymore however I had to work with what I had. I eventually
managed to find a good spot that made my photos turn out alright. Canva was a life saver in this situation
as I was able to create templates that took attention off my very amateur looking photos.

6. What is the one thing you would have changed about your project if you could?
When I sat down to think about my filming fail even more I realized I could’ve gone down the route of
creating videos with my face in it and it being somewhat of a cooking channel because the main issue was the
lighting. At the start I would never have considered it because I again, I didn’t want to use software and apps
I’ve never before however in hindsight I feel like I could’ve handled it.
7. What advice would you offer to future Capstone students to help them with their Capstone journey?

Don’t be afraid to experiment with different paths and ways during your Capstone. It won’t always work but
you will regret it if you don’t. And if it does workout it will only make the Capstone much more rewarding.
