Types of Chemical Reactions:
Synthesis Reaction
- It is when two or more reactants come together to create a single product. They
synthesize to form a new substance.
Equation:
“A + B = C”
Ex.:
a.) 3SO + O2 = 3SO2
b.) C + O2 = CO2
c.) 2Na + Cl2 = 2NaCl
d.) 8Fe + S8 = 8FeS
e.) 2NO + O2 = 2NO2
Decomposition Reaction
- It is when a single reactant splits into two or more products. Usually, it can also
be a process in which chemical species break up into simpler parts.
Equation:
“AB = A + B”
Ex.:
a.) Al2O3 = Al + O2
b.) H2CO3 = H2O + CO
c.) CaCO3 = CaO + CO2
d.) 2H2O = 2H2 + O2
e.) 2AgBr = 2Ag + Br2
Single Replacement Reaction
- It is when a reaction of one element takes the place of another that is similar in
a compound. Single displacement reactions are useful in understanding the
patterns of reactivity of elements of the same type.
Equation:
“A + BC = AC + B”
Ex.:
a.) Cl2 + 2NaBr = 2NaCl + Br2
b.) 2K + 2H2O = 2KOH + H
c.) 2Ag + H2S = Ag2S + H2
d.) Zn + 2HCl = ZnCl2 + H2
e.) Cl2 + Cal2 = CaCl2 + I2
Equation:
“AB + CD = AD + CB”
Ex.:
a.) KBr + AgNO3 = KNO3 + AgBr
b.) HCl + NaOH = NaCl + H2O
c.) Na2S + 2HCl = 2NaCl + H2S
d.) Na2SO4 + SrCl2 = 2NaCl + SrSO4
e.) ZnS + 2HCl = ZnCl2 + H2S
