Personal Statement

My name is Jorge Luis Barrera I was born here in the USA but at the age of 2
years old, my dad and mom took me to Mexico because they were here in the US
for a long time without seeing their parents and they took the decision that It was
time to go back to Mexico the place of their origin and they take me and my brother
with them. I grew up in Mexico speaking just Spanish in a small town with about 50
houses and just one elementary school and one kindergarten with 30 students in
each school, I remember the education and classes were too easy for me and I
always had good grades and I was one of the best students of elementary that I
went to participate in a competition when I was in 3 grade against another 100
students to see who gets the best score in a test with about 50 questions and I go
3rd place in that competition getting a medal. I was also very competitive in
everything I was very athletic and I always represented my school by competing in
running and jumping with different schools having 2nd place. I continued having
good grades and after finishing 4 grade in the summer of 2016 It was the beginning
of 5th grade and my mom and dad made the decision to come back to the USA we
got here again without knowing anything about here because the place in Mexico
we use to live was very poor and nothing of technology or internet with a small and
when I got here I was very surprised of how the streets and houses and everything
were so different. At first, I was scared to go to school because I didn´t know anyone
and didn´t speak English at all but there were teachers who helped me through the
process of learning English and now I know English but not perfectly. Right now I am
17 years old and living in Merced California with my mom, dad, and siblings. My plan
is to go to a College for the first two years and transfer to a UC I'm not sure what to
study yet but I have in mind Architecture or Engineering and also I would like to
continue to keep playing soccer in college. Since I started seeing how my dad works
to keep me in school and everything that's my motivation to get a career so my
parents can be proud of me also I want to give them a better life without working no
more because they have done a lot for me and I would continue in school until I
achieve what I want for my future.
