ATROCITIES OF THE SPANARDS

Discuss at least 2 of the mentioned sources of abuses or atrocities of the

Spaniards in their era.

The Spaniards colonized the Philippines for more than three centuries,
the longest period that the Philippines experienced foreign rule prior to
independence from Spain. Because the Spaniards had the luxury of time to
penetrate the Filipino culture, they brought about numerous influences. The
Filipinos in the 19th century suffered from feudalistic and master slave
relationships with the Spaniards. They committed all of the atrocities against
the Filipino people and the country. One of the abuses they have done is that
they were corrupt. The Alcaldias and Alcaldes were regarded as the most
corrupt of the corrupt in the nineteenth century. Administrators, judges, and
military commandants make up the Alcaldias/Alcalde. They normally have
liberal allowances and privileges of P25/month to deduct a particular
percentage of the total amount of taxes. There were also monopoly trades or
business practices known as indulto para comerciar. Furthermore, they tend to
have heavy taxes known as bandala and tribute. Tribute could be in kind or
cash, with tobacco, chickens, gold, blankets, cotton, rice, or other products,
while bandala is an annual forced sale and requisitioning of goods such as rice.
Another abuse that the Spaniards have committed is the distance between the
colony and the Philippines. They ignore the Filipinos and never pay attention to
their needs because the Spanish officials just enjoy their life by travelling and
with the privilege and powers of being an official.
