WHAT IS A FIRE?

A chemical reaction between oxygen, heat and fuel. You take away
any one of the component out of the equation, the fire will not
survive.

HOW DOES A FIRE START?

For fire to start, it need the right
mixture of oxygen, fuel and heat.

Oxygen on the air is 21% while fire only

need 16% of oxygen to stay alive.

Heat is a form of energy that can be

the source of ignition when it come
into contact with a source of fuel and
heat also help to sustain the
temperature so the fire can keep
burning. Example of sources of heat
are electric, friction and chemical
reaction.

HOW TO ELIMINATE FIRE

STARVATION

1. Cooling – by lowering the temperature

2. Smothering – by depriving of Oxygen

3. Starvation – by removing the source of fuel

QUIZ TIME!!!
Majority of death in fire related accident is due to?

Suffocation from smoke.

Human being needed 19% of oxygen to

survive. Fire will consume the oxygen thus
lowering the percentage of oxygen in the
surrounding.

When oxygen level reach 10% - 12%, people

will pass out. The smoke will further disturb
the breathing capability of the victim and
eventually caused the victim to die from
suffocation.

FIRE PREVENTION 101

1. Risk assessment should be conducted before any prevention actions can be
implemented because
a. Different place/facility/condition have different requirements and
challenges.
b. Helps to identify hotspots where fire related accident will most likely to
occurred.
c. Helps to determine where your resources should be focus on.

2. Continuous education and training relating to fire safety.
a. Evacuation training.
b. Fire fighting equipment training.
c. Rescue training.

FIGHT OR FLIGHT?
• You have not been trained to handle such
situation.

• You don't know what's burning.

• The fire appears to be too large to handle with one

extinguisher.

• The fire is spreading rapidly beyond the spot where

it started.

• You don't have an adequate or appropriate fire

extinguisher.

• You might inhale toxic smoke.

• Your instincts tell you not to.

EVACUATION

There are two types of evacuation.

• Total evacuation :- The whole building and can also include nearby
building need to be evacuated.

• Partial evacuation :- Only certain area of the building need to be

evacuated.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU IN
BURNING BUILDING

1. Have an escape plan 2. Stay low and crawl to

and practice it an exit to avoid smoke
inhalation. Use the wall to
as a guide to find the exits.
