Daily Answer Writing Initiative Day 73

1. Define temperature inversion and explain the significance of temperature inversion?

(10 Marks, 150 words)

Approach:
 Introduction: Write down briefly about the temperature inversion.
 Body: Explain the significance of temperature inversion.
 Conclusion: Conclude by mentioning the importance of temperature inversion.

Answer:
Temperature inversion is the opposite of how the troposphere's temperature typically behaves. Under this, a
layer of warm air sits on top of the cold layer. It is brought about by static atmospheric circumstances, while
it can also be brought about by air moving horizontally or vertically.

Significance of Temperature Inversion:

 Formation of Fog: Warm air above and cold air below causes fog to form because the warm air is cooled
from below and the condensation that results during winter nights creates small droplets surrounding
suspended dust and smoke.
 Formation of Frost: Frost develops when heated air condenses as a result of being cooled by cold air
below at a temperature below the freezing point.
 Results in Atmospheric Stability: Temperature inversion results in atmospheric stability, which halts
air flow in both the ascending and descending directions. The stability of the atmosphere favors dry
conditions and prevents precipitation. Aridity is exacerbated by the temperature inversion brought on by
air subsidence and anticyclonic circumstances.
 Prevents Air Pollutants from Dispersing: The temperature inversion prevents air pollutants like smoke
and dust from dispersing in the valley bottoms.

Although temperature inversions often last for a short while, they are nonetheless extremely frequent. When
determining cloud types, precipitation, visibility, or to prevent air pollutants, temperature inversion is a crucial
phenomena.
