BY LAWRENCE KHOLBERG
SCENARIO:
Every school has its own set of rules and regulations that students are
expected to follow. Even within a single classroom, the teacher establishes
specific rules. During our first-class meeting, our adviser stressed the
importance of honesty during exams and warned us against cheating. Any
student caught cheating would be referred to the school's disciplinary
authority and face consequences. During our first quarter exam, I witnessed
Sarah cheating by secretly using a cheat sheet from her bag. However, I was
concerned about the potential consequences if I reported her to the teacher.
Sarah might deny her actions, and there could be a risk of me being punished
for making accusations, despite telling the truth. Aside from this, my parents
would be called about the incident. Considering these factors, I decided to
remain silent and allow the teacher to catch Sarah cheating on her own. This
way, I would avoid punishment and any involvement in the misconduct.

DOCUMENTATION
In connection with Lawrence Kholberg's Fear of
Punishment, the scenario given above provided an insight
about the pre-conventional stage of moral development
which were primarily motivated by self-interest and fear of
punishment. In the scenario, even though I know that
cheating a misconduct in our classroom but due to the
possible negative outcome which will reflect to me, I was
feared to tell the truth and let our teacher observed the
wrongdoing of Sarah. This instances proved that there is a
fear of punishment despite the fact that I will prevail the
truth.
