FIRE FIGHTING OPERATING INSTRUCTION

1. SYSTEM DESCRIPTION:

Fire fighting system on site is handled by 2 fire fighting pumps coupled to a water
distribution network for fire control. Water from the fire/break water tank and
from the demi water tank feeds the electric driven pump, and separately the
fire/break tank feeds the diesel driven pump and the jockey pump.
Water in the fire fighting pipe network is kept pressurized by the jockey pump
at 105 psi. If the pressure drops below the set point, the diesel driven pump will
start automatically to restore the pressure in the piping line. If pressure is still
dropping, also the electric driven pump will start automatically. Operation of all
the above mentioned pumps will be controlled from the local controllers located
on the pump skids in the Water Treatment Shelter.

2. Diesel Driven Pump.

1. Check that the break/fire tank valve is opened

2. Open the controller panel and energize 1CB;2CB and 3CB
3. Put the switch in manual mode
4. Check diesel tank level, shall be more than ¼ full
5. Check that all valves are open, except the recirculating valve which shall be
closed.
6. Prime the pump.
7. Push the start button (crank 1 or 2)
8. Observe the lube oil pressure (50 psi), rpm (1900 rpm), water temperature
(less than 85 deg.C). If temperature is higher open the manual cooling water
valve.
9. To stop, put the switch in “0” position

In case of electrical power failure, on the local diesel engine controller put the
first switch in “manual” position and switch either “crank 1” or “crank 2”
switches. To stop put back the local switch in “remote”

3 Jockey pump

The jockey pump can maintain the pressure only if there are no leaks in the
systemand the system was pressurised before with the diesel pump

1. Open the back side power distribution panel and close breaker 1.

1
2. Close the breaker for the jockey pump controller
3. Switch to automatic mode the pump.
4. The pump will cut in at 90 psi, cut off at 105 psi, time delay to stop 30 seconds

4. Electric driven pump

The electric driven pump is fed by the 6,6 KV transformer, which shall be alive
before starting the pump.
If required to start the pump:
1. Ask confirmation from PCM that the transformer is energized
2. Switch on the isolating switch
3. Push the start button

5. Automatic mode

If the system is required to stand-by in automatic mode, first it should be

removed the jumper from the electric pump (connectors 1 and 10))
After pressurizing the system with the diesel pump, all controllers should be set
to “auto” mode.
The pressure switces are set to the following parameters:
Jockey pump: cut in at 90 psi, cut off at 105 psi, time delay to stop 30 seconds
Diesel driven pump cut in at 70 psi, cut off at 100 psi, time delay to stop 30
minutes
Electric driven pump: cut in at 60 psi, cut off at 100 psi, time delay to stop 10
minutes

NOTE: DO NOT OPEN THE VALVE FROM THE DEMI WATER TANK IF
THERE IS NOT AN EMERGENCY LIKE A FIRE AND BREAK TANK EMPTY
– The demi water is very corrosive for the piping and will be used only in an
emergency situation.

Every week check:

- Break tank water level – shall be over 60% (in future the well pump will
keep the level automatically)
- Diesel tank minim 25%
- Batteries voltage minim 12,5 V
- Open diesel pump controller and observe that the battery chargers
indicate “charging” or “floating”
