MEETING FUTURE C

MEAT DEMANDS
Presenter: Alyssa Charrier
Doctrine and Covenants 89:12
12 Yea, flesh also of beasts and of the fowls of the air, I, the Lord, have ordained for the
use of man with thanksgiving; nevertheless they are to be used sparingly;
AS A COUNTRY BECOMES
WEALTHIER THE DEMAND FOR
C

MEAT INCREASES.
Should we support this demand?
Should we increase animal
production?
•Pro
• Economy driven
• Variety of food
• Good source of protein and vitamins
• Easy source for minerals
•Con
• Resource demands
• It takes more energy to produce meat than plants
• Land, feed, water, etc.
• Greenhouse gases (5.4%)
What should we do to meet the
growing demand for animal
products?
1. Use more intensive farms to raise animals?
• Example: cattle feedlot

2. Increase feed efficiency in our animals?

• Nutrition
• Genetics

3. Get people everywhere to eat less meat?

AS A COUNTRY BECOMES
WEALTHIER THE DEMAND FOR C

MEAT INCREASES.
Which animal would you focus on increasing production for 2050?
Kilograms of feed to produce
1 kilogram of meat/egg/milk

Fish are efficient (1.1

kilograms)
QUESTION? C

So should we all eat eggs, milk and chicken only?

FEED EFFICIENCY
C

CALCULATION
Total Intake: 10.4 + 7.8 + 5.2 + 13.0 + 13.0 + 2.1 + 0.5 = 52.0 lbs./day
Animal Type
Example
Beef Steer Growing Pig Broiler Chicken Laying Hen
Dairy Cow
(Beef) (Pork) (Chicken) (Eggs)
What they eat (lb./day) (Milk)
Corn grain 10.4 1.1 2.6 0.21 0.18
Soybean meal 7.8 0.0 0.8 0.03 0.02
Distillers grains 5.2 5.5 0.8 0.00 0.00
Corn silage 13.0 5.5 0.0 0.00 0.00
Alfalfa hay 13.0 8.8 0.0 0.00 0.00
Minerals and Vitamins 2.1 0.9 0.1 0.01 0.00
Other 0.5 0.2 0.0 0.00 0.01
Total Intake (lbs./day) 52.0

Output (lbs./day of food produced) 68.8 2.2 1.85 0.13 0.123

Efficiency (Output/Total Intake) 1.32

68.8 lbs./day A high value is more efficient

Efficiency: = 1.32
52.0 lbs./day A low value is less efficient

3.Output (lbs./day) 68.8 2.2 1.85 0.13 0.123

4. Edible Efficiency (Output/Edible 4.41
Intake)

Edible Efficiency: 68.8 A high value is more efficient

= 4.41
A low value is less efficient
15.60
Which animal is the most efficient now?
QUESTION? C

So should we all eat eggs, milk and chicken only?

Take Home Message:
•Eating plants is more efficient than eating animals
•Some animals are more efficient at converting feed
than others
•Sometimes the data misrepresents the real picture
• Animals feed on lands that cannot be used for other things
•We need to look/think beyond the basic numbers
when making decisions in this area.
