INSTALLATION AND START UP

When the DSC-DD is powered, the LED on the top panel will first turn orange. purple, or
red and then green. The first two colors indicate the communications method of the unit:
orange is for RS-232 (or use with DSCView LITE), purple is for RS-485 (or use with a
digital device), red is for USB (or use with DSCView LITE). The factory default
communications mode is RS-232 unless otherwise requested.

Communications Method
See what method the DSC-DD is currently using. To do this, power up the DSC-DD and
see which color the LED is before it turns green. If the color is orange, the DSC-DD is in
RS-232 mode. If the color is purple, the DSC-DD is in RS-485 mode. If the color is red,
the DSC-DD is in USB mode.
To change the mode, cycle the power and, upon power up, hold the Shunt button down.
This will cycle the DSC-DD through RS-232, RS-485, and USB modes. Keep the button
depressed until the LED shows the color of the mode desired. The LED will then turn
green, indicating that the DSC-DD is in run mode. Release the Shunt button.

RUN MODE
The DSC-DD has two modes of operation, each discernable by looking at the color of
the LED on the top of the DSC-DD, Run mode, and System Calibration mode. At power-
on it will be in Run mode. The LED is green when the DSC-DD is in Run Mode and blue
when the DSC-DD is in Calibration Mode.

With the use of DSCView LITE, the user can perform various tasks when the DSC-DD is
in Run Mode:

Data Measurement
Measure track, peak and valley from a given, calibrated sensor. The Model 4437
supports load units of Lbs and Kg, as well as extension units of In, cm, and mm. Either
sensor type can also send data as a percentage of a given base load/extension.
DSCView LITE adds to these units and can be customized to meet user needs. The
software also has a user-defined unit option that allows the user to create their own unit
of measure by applying a polynomial to the data.

Tare and Reset

DSCView LITE allows the user to command the DSC-DD to tare track data and reset
peak and valley measurements.

DSC Display Setup Options

While the DSC-DD is in Run Mode, the user can, with the use of DSCView LITE, name
the DSC-DD with four characters that the DSC-DD stores, enable and disable TEDS
Tag®/Auto ID of sensors, and enable or disable the DSC-DD’s internal temperature
compensation.

TEDS Tag®/Auto ID
The DSC-DD is capable of recognizing a sensor that has been calibrated on the
DSC-DD when that sensor is plugged into the DSC-DD. This is true only if the
sensor has been calibrated in one of the three sensor “slots” within the DSC-DD
and has not been overwritten with another sensor calibration.

Temperature Compensation
The DSC-DD has the ability to compensate for temperature that may affect data
readings. By default, temperature compensation is set ON in the factory unless
otherwise requested.

Sensor Setup Options

Each of the three sensor “slots” within the DSC-DD can store calibration data, but they
can also store sensor-specific settings in the DSC Display with the use of DSCView LITE
software. These settings include labeling a sensor on the LCD Display; filtering data;
displaying decimal points (the DSC-DD will use this to output data to an attached digital
display if that option has been purchased); setting up analog output if it is tied to the
sensor output; and setting the base value to use when track data is in units of %.

EPSILON TECHNOLOGY CORP.
M O D E L 4 4 3 7 D S C D I S P L AY H AR D W AR E M AN U AL

LCD Display Labeling

The DSC-DD uses the first four characters of the LCD Display for a user-settable
label. The default label will show the active sensor (sensor 1, 2, or 3) and
channel and has the format s<active sensor>c<channel>, i.e. s2cA. In a single
channel DSC-DD, the channel will always be A. The user can change this label
to any other four characters/digits through DSCView LITE.

Filtering
The DSC-DD can perform moving average filtering of data using up to 128 data
points.

Analog Output
The user can set the range of voltage the DSC-DD outputs in response to the
sensor stimulus. This allows the user to set any maximum and minimum voltage
and offset so that the analog output can be scaled to match the input
requirements of nearly any data acquisition system. This includes single ended
and bipolar outputs.

CALIBRATION MODE
The unit’s LED turns blue when the DSC-DD is placed in calibration mode OR when a
communications check is sent to it via the DSCView LITE. If the DSC-DD is in
calibration mode, the LED will stay blue. If an address check was sent, as is done by
the GUIs to monitor the connection to the DSC-DD, the LED will flash blue and return to
green for run mode.

Once in calibration mode, sensors can be calibrated using their manufacturer’s mV/V
constant, two or five point Mass, or precision shunt calibration. DSCView LITE software
steps the user through the calibration process for each sensor.

There are three sensor “slots” within the DSC-DD that can hold these calibrations.
Calibration data is maintained in the DSC-DD through power cycle.

Once a sensor has been calibrated, the DSC-DD must be commanded to stream data to
DSCView LITE. Streaming data, test conditions, and storing of test data are all handled
by DSCView LITE. Speak to your Epsilon sales representative for more information on
DSCView LITE.

APPLICATION NOTE #1:

Make Your Own Plug-and-Play Extensometer System and

Eliminate Costly User Errors

The Problem
It’s a common problem. You’re out on the road and you’re carrying a variety of
extensometers that span different ranges that might be needed to calibrate a customer’s
system, or perhaps you need to conduct a wide range of force measurements for a
particular testing application. You need to change the extensometer that is connected to
your instrument before you can continue. When the extensometer is connected to the
instrument, the appropriate calibration factors need to be installed in the instrument.
Manual data entry, or requiring the operator to select from a database of stored
calibrations parameters, introduces the possibility of user error. Loading the wrong
parameters for a extensometer, or even worse, corrupting the existing calibration data,
can lead to erroneous results and costly recalibration expenses. It would be much more
efficient if the instrument could automatically identify the extensometer that is being
attached to it and self-install the proper calibration data.

The TEDS-Tag® Plug-and-Play Solution

The TEDS-Tag® auto identification system which retains the attractive feature of self
identification found in the TEDS standard but can be implemented simply on any
extensometer and, when connected to the Model DSC-DD digital signal conditioner,
becomes transparent to the user. Multi extensometer-multi instrument matched pair
calibrations are also supported. This can be a critical advantage in precision
applications such as field calibration services.

With the TEDS-Tag® system, a small and inexpensive electronic identification chip is
placed in the cable that extends from the extensometer or it can be mounted within the
extensometer housing. This chip contains a unique electronic serial number that can be
read by the DSC-DD to identify the extensometer. The extensometer is then connected
to the DSC-DD and a standard calibration procedure is performed. The instrument
automatically stores the calibration data inside the DSC-DD itself along with the unique
extensometer identification number from the microchip. Whenever that extensometer is
reconnected to the DSC-DD, it automatically recognizes the extensometer and self-
installs the appropriate calibration data. True plug-and-play operation is achieved. With
this system the calibration data can automatically include compensation for the particular
DSC-DD so that high precision matched systems can be realized. Moreover, if the
extensometer is moved to another DSC-DD, that DSC-DD will recall the calibration data
that it has stored internally for that extensometer. The DSC-DD’s can store multiple
extensometer calibration entries. In this way, multiple extensometers can form a
matched calibration set with multiple DSC-DD’s.

How to Make the TEDS-Tag® Plug-and-Play Extensometer

Any extensometer can be easily made into a TEDS-Tag® extensometer. The electronic
identification chip is a Dallas Semiconductor part, number DS2401. It is readily available
from distributors such as Digikey for less than $2.00 each, or it can be provided by
Epsilon. As shown in Figure 1, the chip is very small, making it easy to fit into a cable
hood or extensometer housing.

Figure 1. Electronic Identification Chip.

The DSC-DD’s are connected to extensometers via a DB9 connector. The electronic
identification chip does not interfere with the extensometer signals. Figure 2 shows the
interconnection of the DS2401 tag identification chip with the DB9 sensor connector on
the rear of the instruments. Pin 3 of the DS2401 is not used and can be cut off if
desired. Simply connecting pins 1 and 2 from the DS2401 to pins 8 and 7, respectively,
of the DB9 connector will enable plug-and-play operation.

Figure 2. Interconnection between load cell connector and the DS2401.

EPSILON TECHNOLOGY CORP.
M O D E L 4 4 3 7 D S C D I S P L AY H AR D W AR E M AN U AL

When using off the shelf extensometers or other strain-gauge sensors, it is often
convenient to locate the DS2401 in the hood of the cable. As an example, Figure 3
shows a typical integration of the DS2401 with a commonly available S-type load cell.
The cable hood is pulled back in order to clearly view the DS2401. The load cell comes
with a permanently mounted cable that protrudes from the load cell housing. At the end
of the cable, the individual wires have their insulation stripped back and they are
soldered into the DB9 connector per the pinout in Figure 2. The DS2401 is soldered
across DB9 pins 7 and 8, and fits within the connector’s hood. For a few dollars in parts
and a simple cable termination procedure, you have taken a standard load cell and
transformed it into a TEDS-Tag® plug-and-play load cell. This same process applies to
an extensometer.

DS2401 Electronic Tag Chip

Figure 3. Standard S type load cell shown with an electronic tag chip mounted in the hood of the cable.

For applications in which access to the extensometer and access to the extensometer
cable is restricted, an in-line tag identification module can be simply constructed. Figure
4 shows how a straight through in-line cable adaptor can incorporate the DS2401
electronic tag chip. The protective hood has been removed for clarity. In this application,
the cable adapter is actually placed in series with the extensometer cable before it is
plugged into the instrument. It is also possible to use this technique in applications
where different calibrations might be required on the same extensometer. The user may
have a single extensometer and instrument, but can change which calibration is auto
selected by simply changing the in-line cable adaptor. Since each cable adaptor has a
different tag identification chip, the instrument will associate a different calibration data
set with each in-line adaptor. This might be useful, for example, if a precision 6-point
linearization of the extensometer is required in two different operating ranges of the
same extensometer.

DS2401 Electronic Tag Chip

Figure 4. In-line cable adapter (hood not shown) that incorporates a tag identification chip.

Plug-and-Play Operation

Now that the extensometer has been converted to a TEDS-Tag® extensometer, it can be
connected to the DSC-DD. The very first time it is connected, a standard calibration
procedure is performed to initialize the cell’s calibration data in the instrument. The
instruments support a variety of industry standard calibrations including mV/V, shunt, 2-
point, or multi-point calibration. The instrument then automatically detects the presence
of the TEDS-Tag® extensometer and matches it with its calibration data. From this point
forward, the system is completely plug-and-play. Typical startup is now:

1. Plug extensometer into the instrument.

2. Turn on the power.
3. You’re done.

After they’ve been initially calibrated on the instrument, changing cells is done by simply
plugging the new cell into the instrument and turning on the power. That’s it.

The DSC-DD is a calibration quality unit that has internal storage for the calibration data
of 3 extensometers. This unit with auto extensometer identification is ideal for field
calibration services. The DSC-DD outputs analog voltages as well as direct-to-PC digital
readings. It can be used with GUI software or standalone to replace analog
extensometer signal conditioners. When it identifies a TEDS-Tag® extensometer, it not
only auto-installs the corresponding calibration data needed to take measurements from
the cell, it also auto-installs gain and offset factors for its 16-bit scalable analog output.
The voltage range and offset of the analog output is automatically changed to match the
corresponding extensometer. This is a powerful feature. Using the DSC-DD in this way
is like having multiple analog extensometer signal conditioners all in one, and having
them automatically removed, installed, and matched with a extensometer, all without any
user intervention.
