3.1. INTRODUCTION
• Tourism discourse can be found in booklets, leaflets, websites, magazines, descriptive panels, visitors’
guides and brochures dealing with tourism and holiday experiences.
• Translators of tourist texts play an important role as a mediator of linguistic and cultural differences, which
are an exciting challenge for the discerning traveller.

v1.0023106206
3.2.1. COMMUNICATIVE FUNCTIONS
• The language of tourism is characterized by peculiar stylistic, pragmatic and lexical features, which are
often underestimated by translators.
• Its discourse patterns actually present linguistic and cultural features which should always be taken
into account.
• Tourism texts often fulfil 2 communicative functions: informative and appellative.
▪ Informative function: provide information to the reader and is oriented to the context.
→ Translators: be loyal to the ST content and offer translation of full information.
▪ Appellative function: produce persuasive effects and are oriented to the addressee.
→ Translators: provoke similar behavioural reactions in the ST and TT readers.
→ Language euphoria.
• Another feature is stereotypes which play an important role in holiday planning.

v1.0023106206
3.2.2. GRAMMAR AND LEXIS
• Culture-bound words
• Borrowings and calques
• Syntax
• Verb tenses
8
v1.0023106206
3.2.2. GRAMMAR AND LEXIS (cont.)
a. Culture-bound words
• Translation of tourism: transferring elements of one culture to another.
→ cultural differences must be taken into account.
→ likely to be challenging to translators.
• Culture-bound words: words or expressions referring to traditions, customs, ideas or typical phenomena of the
source culture (E.g. mozzarella (which has already covered) the meaning of “cheese”) → phô mai mozzarella).
→ may be unknown in the target culture, and should not be rendered literally.
→ recommended translation strategies: paraphrasing, combination of borrowings and other translation
procedures.
• Typical words of a geographical area referring to landscapes or ecology should be transferred in the target text,
and possibly explained with a culture-free term.
• For certain geographic proper nouns (E.g. the Alps, the Thames River), ”the” should be kept if used in maps or
addresses, but can be omitted in other texts like brochures or leaflets.

3.2.2. GRAMMAR AND LEXIS (cont.)
c. Syntax
Deal with pre- and post-modification and nominalization.
• Pre-modification: presence of modifiers (adjective or noun) before a head noun.
E.g. new computer room → phòng máy (tính) mới.
• Post-modification: finite clauses (with verbs of a particular tense, modality and polarity) or non-finite clauses
(with no tense or modality).
E.g. he hates people telling lies → anh ấy ghét những kẻ hay nói dối.
• Nominalisation: common in English tourism texts and concerning the transformation of verbs into nouns.
E.g. upon arrival at the hotel (instead of arriving at the hotel) → khi đến khách sạn.

3.2.2. GRAMMAR AND LEXIS (cont.)
d. Verb tenses
The verb tenses mostly used in English tourism texts are present simple, imperatives, will for future and
modal verbs.
• Present simple conveys an idea of habit and of a timeless holiday.
• Imperatives are used to give suggestions and/ or talk tourists into a holiday experience.
• will for future invites addressees to enjoy the features of a tourist destination and/ or exert control over the
perspective tourist.
• Modal verbs have a promotional function and convey necessity, possibility, probability or negation.
12
v1.0023106206
3.2.3. CLAUSE STRUCTURE
• English clause structure follows a fairly fixed order: subject + verb + object
• A clause structure consists of Theme and Rheme:
▪ Theme: main element telling the audience what the clause is about.
▪ Rheme: developing the topic introduced by the Theme.
Theme Rheme

Practice 1: Fill in the gaps with correct words to complete the statements about the language of tourism.
1. When dealing with tourism texts, a translator should take both (1) ____________________ features into consideration.
2. An informative translation of a tourism text must stay loyal to and include the rendering of (2) ____________________ in
the source text.
3. To translate cultural-bound words, which may indicate a concept or thing (3) ____________________ to the target
culture and have no equivalent in target language, translators should make use of translation strategies like (4)
____________________ or a combination of borrowings and other procedures. For example, a translator can keep a
cultural-bound word as is and explain it with a (5) ____________________ term.
4. In general, the English and Vietnamese languages share the basic clause structure with a theme followed by a rheme,
which develop the (6) ____________________ introduced by the theme. An English tourism text is characterized by the
use of (7) ____________________ and (8) ____________________, while a Vietnamese one tends to use the later, in
which modifiers stand after a head noun. Besides, (9) ____________________, in which verbs are transformed into
nouns, is common in English, Vietnamese hardly experiences the same phenomenon.
5. English tourism texts often make use of such tenses as (10) ____________________, imperatives, will for future and
modal verbs, and have personal and informal style with vivid and figurative language.

Practice 3: Analyse the language used in the following tourism text in English in terms of
communicative functions, grammar and lexis and style.
1. Stay in a motel with river views and get close to nature in California. Planning some time in Los Angeles?
Sleep Ezy Motel comes with an outdoor pool and a restaurant and is a fabulous choice. Located approximately
6 miles north of the bustling downtown area, you'll be nice and close to the water here. Also consider Sunshine
Motor Inn, around 7 miles south of the center of Los Angeles. It offers a lovely riverside setting and
conveniences such as a laundry room and a kitchenette.

The Bat pagoda is the only one of all Khmer pagodas in the Mekong Delta that still keeps its original roof – a
double layered structure covered with coloured tiles and topped with a tower, which is one of the most beautiful
parts here. Each pillar supporting the pagoda roof has on its top a divine God, KEMNAR or APSARA, with
clasped hands in front of their breasts welcoming visitors. At five o’clock in the morning, bats fly back and hang
themselves on branches of fruit trees in the pagoda. Surprisingly, they never touch any fruit in the orchard.
That is why the pagoda is also known as the Bat pagoda.
