Sometimes, the choice is one of personal preference, economy, and ease. In a few cases,
though, the choice is clear-cut and obvious, mainly with respect to grounding. Generally,
do-it-yourselfers prefer plastic electrical boxes and electricians use both metal and
plastic boxes.
Metal electrical boxes were used long before plastic (PVC) electrical boxes were
introduced to the market. Ultra-strong, fireproof, and incapable of being melted, metal
boxes offer the greatest level of security for all electrical wiring applications.
Plastic boxes are lightweight, cheap, and simple to work with. Holes are easy to punch
out in the back or sides. PVC can melt when subjected to sufficiently high temperatures
but it does not conduct electricity. Many plastic boxes come with built-in clamps for the
wires, further lowering the overall project cost.

Rigid Metal Conduit (RMC):
RMC is composed of heavyweight galvanized steel and installed with
threaded fittings. Known for being very strong, RMC is unfortunately one of
the more expensive electrical conduits when it comes to both materials and
labor. Aluminum is another material used for RMC, and may have additional
coating applied to better resist corrosion.

Galvanized Rigid Steel (GRC):

Approved for indoor and outdoor applications, GRC is made from steel and is
traditionally found in industrial and commercial applications, GRC has been
a long-time industry standard and benefits from impressive impact
resistance. Unfortunately, its heavy weight and poor field handling make
GRC particularly expensive to install and it can be highly susceptible to
corrosion.
Intermediate Metal Conduit (IMC):
Approved for the same applications as RMC, IMC is a steel conduit that is
slightly lighter than RMC and rated for outdoor use. It can be more cost-
effective than RMC, available threaded or unthreaded, and may or may not
be coated. Compared to GRC and RMC, IMC has much thinner walls that can
handle more wire fill but is more susceptible to kink. IMC only goes up to 4
inches in trade sizes, so it is significantly smaller than other conduits.

Electrical Metallic Tubing (EMT):

Thin-walled and unthreaded, EMT is typically made of coated steel and used in
place of GRC in commercial and industrial applications, though it is commonly
found in residential applications as well. It can also be made of aluminum and is
approved for use in concrete but is not permitted to be installed where subject
to physical damage. EMT is not able to offer the same level of protection as GRC.
It is easily bent but can not be field threaded because of its thinness.
Rigid Nonmetallic Conduit (RNC):
Non-metallic, unthreaded, smooth-walled tubing is available in multiple
substrates including high-density polyethylene, PVC, and RTRC (fiberglass).
The capabilities and specs vary by substrate but several forms of RNC are
approved for underground or direct burial use.

RTRC Conduit:
Available in various wall thicknesses and threaded, RTRC (reinforced
thermosetting resin conduit), or fiberglass conduit is created by tension-
winding strands of fiberglass over a rotating mandrel, before impregnating
the strands with resin and curing under high temperature, resulting in high
flexural strength and high-temperature resistance.
PVC Conduit:
Available in varying wall thicknesses and threaded, PVC is light and
commonly used for applications requiring non-metal electrical conduit. PVC
conduit is not recommended for use in direct sunlight due to poor UV
stability. It is relatively easy to heat and field bend with the use of a hotbox
conduit bender, but must be mounted to allow for expansion and contraction
due to a high coefficient of thermal expansion, and may deform after
installation in environments that are too hot.

Electrical Nonmetallic Tubing (ENT):

Thin-walled and corrugated, ENT (electrical nonmetallic tubing) is flame
retardant but not fire rated. It is not approved for use in exposed locations
but is commonly used inside walls or within concrete blocks. Known for its
extreme flexibility ENT can be field bent by hand without requiring any
special tools or the application of heat.
NM Cable
Best for: Interior use in dry locations
Often called “Romex” after one popular brand name, nonmetallic (NM) cable is a type of circuit
wiring designed for interior use in dry locations. It consists of two or more individual wires
wrapped inside a protective plastic sheathing. NM cable usually contains one or more “hot”
(current-carrying) wires, a neutral wire, and a ground wire. These conductors are insulated in
white (usually neutral) and black (usually hot) for installation. Most NM cables have a flattened
tubular shape and run invisibly through the walls, ceiling, and floor cavities of your home.
uf Cable
Best for: Underground wire for outdoor fixtures
Underground Feeder (UF) is a type of nonmetallic cable designed for wet locations and direct
burial in the ground. It is commonly used for supplying outdoor fixtures, such as lampposts. Like
standard NM cable, UF contains insulated hot and neutral wires, plus a bare copper ground wire.
This type of electrical wire is also a bit more expensive than NM wire because of its durable
insulation. UF cable is normally sold with gray outer sheathing. UF cable is also used for major
circuit wiring, and it carries a dangerous amount of voltage as long as the circuits are turned on.
THHN/THWN Wire
Best for: Insulated wire inside conduits
THHN and THWN are codes for the two most common types of insulated wire used inside
conduit. Unlike NM cable, in which two or more individually insulated conductors (copper or
aluminum) are bundled inside a plastic sheathing, THHN and THWN wires are single conductors,
each with its color-coded insulation. Instead of being protected by NM cable sheathing, these
wires are protected by tubular metal or plastic conduit.
The letters indicate specific properties of the wire
insulation:

• T: Thermoplastic
• H: Heat-resistant; HH means highly heat-resistant
• W: Rated for wet locations
• N: Nylon-coated, for added protection

THHN and THWN wires have colored sheathings that

are generally used to identify their function in a
circuit:

• Hot wires: Black, red, orange

• Neutral wires: White, brown
• Ground wires: Green, yellow-green
Low-Voltage Wire
Best for: Circuits requiring 50 volts or less
Low-voltage wiring is used for circuits typically requiring 50 volts or less. Several common
types are landscape lighting wire, sprinkler system connections, bell wire (for doorbells),
speaker system wires, and thermostat wires. Low-voltage wires typically are insulated and may
be contained in cable sheathing or combined in twisted pairs, similar to lamp cord wire. It must
be used only for low-voltage applications. These are typically very small wires that are much
different from standard circuit wiring, and their costs tend to be lower than other household
wires.
Phone and Data Wire
Best for: Landline telephones and internet hookups
Telephone and data wiring are low-voltage wires used for “landline” telephones and internet
hookups, typically made from copper. Telephone cables may contain four or eight wires.
Category 5 (Cat 5) cable, the most common type of household data wiring, contains eight wires
wrapped together in four pairs. It can be used for both phone and data transmission and offers
greater capacity and quality than standard phone wire. Like low-voltage wire, it is often cheaper
than other types of household wiring like NM or UF cables.
Coaxial Cable
Best for: Data wiring
Coaxial cable is beginning to grow less common, thanks to the use of other forms of data wiring,
such as HDMI, for television data transmission. Coaxial cable is a round, jacketed cable that
features an inner conductor (usually copper) surrounded by a tubular insulating layer,
surrounded by a tubular conducting shield made of braided wire. Coaxial cable was once the
standard for connecting televisions to antenna or cable service delivery and is still often used to
connect satellite dishes or to bring subscription television service to an in-home distribution
point.
