STEvE BROWn
Steve Brown is Head of the Tourism Department at Flinders University, South
Australia, where he teaches festival and event design and management. Steve works as
both an academic and event industry practitioner, working in most states of Australia
designing and producing a wide range of large-scale outdoor festivals and events. He is
a member of the International Festival and Events Association and the Event Education
and Research Network Australasia, an Associate Fellow of Meetings Events Australia
(MEA), and a founding member of the international Event Design Research Network.
Steve is also a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the International Journal of
Event and Festival Management and has written chapters for a number of international
event texts. In 2009, Steve was appointed to the judging panel for the Australian Event
Awards for the Best Achievement in the Design category.
mEEgAn JOnES
Meegan Jones is the author of Sustainable event management: a practical guide. She is an
events professional focusing her work on developing sustainable management solu-
tions for live events. She worked as Sustainability Co-ordinator for Festival Republic
(Reading, Leeds, Latitude & Glastonbury Festivals UK), developed sustainability solu-
tions at Peats Ridge Festival in Australia, and worked on greening for Live Earth India
and the London Marathon. She is on the working group for Global Reporting Initia-
tive' s (GRI) events industry sector supplement, is a global greening consultant for Live
Earth, and is festivals consultant for UK music industry climate impact organisation
Julie' s Bicycle. She consults on the UN Music & Environment Initiative and is on the
working group for ISO 20121, a standard for events sustainability. She is Managing
Director of GreenShoot Pacific in Australia, which works with events, screen and
music touring industries to provide sustainable production solutions, workshops and
consultancy services.

P R E FA C E
In the past two decades, event management has shifted from being a field of dedicated
and resourceful amateurs to being one of trained and skilled professionals. There are
several reasons for this shift.
First, event management has emerged as the umbrella profession for a diverse range
of activities that were previously viewed as discrete areas. These activities include fes-
tivals, sporting events, conferences, tourism and corporate events. This change has led
to the need for a methodology broad enough to service this wide range of event types,
but also flexible enough to encompass their individual needs and differences.
Second, the environments in which events operate and the range of stakeholder
expectations have become much more complex and demanding. This change has led
to the need for a robust methodology that is responsive to change and able to manage
and encompass risk.
Third, corporate and government involvement in events has increased dramatically,
in terms of both companies mounting events for their own purposes, and companies
and governments investing in events through sponsorship and grants. This change has
led to the need for management systems that are accountable and able to measure and
deliver return on investment.
Fourth, the challenge of climate change has provided the imperative and the inspi-
ration for finding ways of reducing the environmental impact and carbon footprint of
events, leading to green event strategies across the broad spectrum of event management.
In response to these challenges, the event industry has relatively quickly developed
a body of knowledge of industry best practice, supported by training and accredita-
tion. To do so, it has borrowed much from other disciplines and adapted this knowl-
edge to the event context.
This textbook attempts to capture and refine this emerging body of knowledge,
and to document it in a useful form for both researchers and practitioners in the
field. As authors, we each bring to the textbook the benefits of our own discipline
and perspective, reflecting the many facets of event management. In developing this
body of knowledge, we have also relied on colleagues in academia and industry Ð in
fields as diverse as marketing, tourism, project management, business studies, law and
accounting Ð who have assisted us in applying these disciplines in the event context.
Teaching event management throughout Australia, and in locations as diverse as
London, Edinburgh, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Beijing, Auckland and Cape Town,
has helped us to develop a global perspective on events, which is reflected in the range
and diversity of case studies and examples in this textbook.
Compared with the early years when event management was still emerging as a
discipline, there now exists a much greater body of research, and a larger number of
academic conferences, courses and texts in the field. More is known about events and
how they behave, and how they can be enhanced, leveraged and evaluated. This edi-
tion aims to embrace and extend this growing body of knowledge, and to track many
of the recent changes and developments in the field.
Event management is still evolving as an industry and as a profession; hopefully, the
fifth edition of Festival and Special Event Management will contribute to this evolution
and to a better understanding of how events enrich our lives.
