4.1 Introductory Activity Motivation:
What is constellation? What are the common constellations that can be seen in the night sky?
5 minutes
4.2 Activity Group the pupils into four.
1. Have them discuss among the group the patterns of stars they saw last night.
2. Each
10 minutes group will make at least 3 pattern of stars that is common to your group. 3.
Choose a reporter to explain your answer in front of the class.

(Some stars appear to cluster with another to form figures or patterns. A distinct pattern formed by
group of stars is called constellation. Constellation may look like humans, animals, or things. Astronomers
divide the sky into 88 constellations. The shape of constellations slowly change over very long period of
time.The familiar forms will look quite different many thousands of years from now. Constellations change
over time because every star we see is moving through space. Over thousands of years, the stars in the Big
Dipper will move so far apart that the dipper pattern will eventually disappear.
In 1922, Henry Norris Russel helped the International Astronomical Union (IAU) in dividing the celestial
sphere into 88 official constellations. Some of these constellations are listed in the table below.
