SUBJECT : INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS
Lesson Plan: Introduction to Computers

Grade Level: Middle School (6th-8th grade)

Duration: 60 minutes

Objective:
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

Define what a computer is and its basic components.

Understand the purpose and functionality of various computer
peripherals.
Identify the main types of software used on computers.
Demonstrate basic computer skills such as using the keyboard and
mouse effectively.
Materials:

Whiteboard or chalkboard and markers/chalk

Computer or laptop for demonstration purposes
Projector or screen (optional but useful for visual aids)
Handouts or worksheets (optional)
Internet access (optional for supplementary material)
Procedure:

Introduction (10 minutes):

Begin the lesson by asking the students about their experiences with
computers. What do they use computers for in their daily lives?
Encourage open discussion to gauge their familiarity with the topic.
Definition of a Computer (10 minutes):

Provide a clear definition of what a computer is: a device that can receive,
process, and output data to perform specific tasks.
Explain the basic components of a computer: central processing unit (CPU),
monitor, keyboard, mouse, and storage devices (e.g., hard drive, USB drive).
Show images or use diagrams to illustrate the different components and
their functions.
Computer Peripherals (15 minutes):

Discuss various computer peripherals and their purposes, such as printers,

scanners, speakers, and webcams.
Explain how these peripherals extend the functionality of a computer and
make specific tasks easier.
If available, demonstrate how some peripherals work (e.g., printing a
document, scanning an image).
Types of Software (15 minutes):

Introduce the concept of software and its role in computer

operations.
Discuss the two main types of software: system software (e.g.,
operating systems) and application software (e.g., word processors,
web browsers).
Explain how application software allows users to perform specific
tasks, and give examples of popular applications.
Basic Computer Skills (10 minutes):

Demonstrate basic computer skills, including how to use the keyboard

and mouse effectively.
Show students how to navigate the desktop, open applications, and
interact with files and folders.
Provide some practical exercises for students to try out on their own
computers if available.
Conclusion (5 minutes):

Recap the main points covered in the lesson: computer definition,

components, peripherals, types of software, and basic skills.
Ask students if they have any questions or need further clarification on any
topic.
Assign homework or provide optional resources for further exploration of
computer-related topics.
Assessment:

During the lesson, observe students' participation in discussions and their

engagement with the computer demonstrations.
Create a short quiz or worksheet to assess their understanding of computer
components, peripherals, software types, and basic computer skills.
Review their completed homework or responses to the quiz to evaluate
individual comprehension.
