Baro Akobo/Sobat River Basin

Baro Akobo basin is the second most important river with water resources of 23 billion m3 /year.
There is also sufficient water to irrigate 1 million ha land and generate 19,826 GWhr/year
electricity. The Ethiopian recent master plan study has identified 756000 ha of irrigation
potential at full development option and installed capacity of 2710 MW. Ethiopia is planning the
construction of the following Dams:

1) TAMS DAM-

The TAMS dam will have gross volume of 8.5billion m3. The live storage is 7.4 billion m3. And
installed capacity is 1700 MW

2) BARO-1 DAM

The Baro I dam will have gross volume of 1.3 billion m3. And installed capacity of 180 MW.

3) BARO-2 DAM

Baro 2 will operate in parallel with Baro 1 and will not require a large storage volume. And will
have an installed capacity of 500 MW.

4) GENJI DAM

A weir is selected with max height of 22m and crest length of 135 m. The Genji weir have gross
volume of 1.5 million m3. It is anticipated that Genji project will have an installed capacity of 216
MW.

5) BIRBIR A DAM

An earth fill has been selected with dam height of 56 m with a gross volume of 1.1 billion m3.
Birbir A project will have an installed capacity of 95 MW.

6) BIRBIR R DAM HP

The Birbir R dam will have a gross volume of 2.7 billion m3 and installed
volume. And will have an installed capacity of 500 MW.

h max height of 22m and crest length of 135 m. The Genji weir have gross volume of 1.5 million
m3. It is anticipated that Genji project will have an installed capacity of 216 MW.

5) BIRBIR A DAM
An earth fill has been selected with dam height of 56 m with a gross volume of 1.1 billion m3.
Birbir A project will have an installed capacity of 95 MW.

6) BIRBIR R DAM HP

The Birbir R dam will have a gross volume of 2.7 billion m3 and installed capacity of 465 MW.

7) GEBA REGULATION DAM, GEBA 1HP, GEBA2

Geba dam is RCC with height of 30 m and Geba1 Concrete weir has a height of 17 m and Geba
2 is arch dam with height of 67 m. the total storage is 1,100 Mm3 Total storage volume of these
projects is equal to 13.6 billion m3. This means they can stop the water completely from flowing
to south-Sudan.
