5.1 – Magnetic Fields

1. Above there is a circular loop of wire that has a clockwise current running through it. What is the direction of
the magnetic field inside of the loop?

2. The wire above has a current being carried to the right and point P is a distance r
away from the wire.
a) What is the direction of the magnetic field at P? a
b) By how much would the magnetic field change if the current was doubled
and the distance r was doubled?

3. The figure above on the left shows two particles of equal and opposite charge that form an electric dipole.
The figure on the right shows a bar magnet, which is a magnetic dipole. At which corresponding pair of labeled
points do the associated fields (electric or magnetic) point in opposite directions?

4. Two long, thin, parallel wires are separated by a distance d and each carry a current I to
the right as shown above. What is the net magnetic field due to these two wires at a point
P, located at a distance d/4 from the upper wire?

5. The two wires shown are separated by d = 15.0 cm and carry

currents of I = 10.00 A in opposite directions. Find the magnitude and
direction of the net magnetic field
a) at a point midway between the wires.
b) at point P1, d=15.0 cm to the right of the wire on the right.
c) at point P2, 2d = 30.0 cm to the left of the wire on the left.

6. Two straight parallel wires carry currents in opposite directions as shown in the
figure. One of the wires carries a current of I2 = 10.9 A. Point A is the midpoint
between the wires. The total distance between the wires is d = 12.1 cm. Point C is 4.78
cm to the right of the wire carrying current I2. Current I1 is adjusted so that the
magnetic field at C is zero.
a) Calculate the value of the current I1.
b) Calculate the magnitude of the magnetic field at point A.
