CLASS: JSS 2
LESSON TITLE: Content of the Qur’ān
SUBTITLE (IF ANY): Features of Makkah and Madinah
PERIOD: Double
DURATION: 80 Minutes
LEARNING OBJECTIVES: By the end of the lesson, thestudents will be able to:
i. state the number of chapters contained in the Qur’an
ii. mention the numbers of Suwar that was revealed in Makkah and Madinah.
iii. identify the features of Makkah and Madinah.

BUILDING BACKGROUND/CONNECTION TO PRIOR KNOWLEDGE:


The students are familiar with the meaning of the Qur’ān and can state the circumstances
surrounding its revelation.
CONTENT:
Content of the Qur’ān
 Al-Qur’ān as book of Islam and words of Allah (SWT)
 It contains 114 (One Hundred and Fourteen) Suwar: Chapters.
 All the chapters of the Qur’ān were revealed to the Prophet (SAW) in two major places
of Makkah and Madinah.
 There are two types of chapters in the Qur’ān: i.e.Makkiyyah: Makkan Chapters,
Madaniyyah: Maddinan Chapters
 A total of 91 chapters were revealed to the Prophet (SAW) in Makkah for 13 years
 Makkiyyah: Makkan Chapters, Madaniyyah: Madinan Chapters
 The remaining 23 were revealed to him in Madinah for the period of 10 years.
 Altogether the Qur’ān was revealed little by little to the Prophet for 23 years.
Features of Makkan and Madinan Suwār
The followings are characteristics or features of Makkan and Madinan chapters:
 Makkan chapters are those Qur’ānic portion(s) revealed in Makkah while Madinan
chapters are those revealed in Madinah.
 Makkan chapter are usually short while Madinah chapters are mostly longer and more
explanatory.
 Makkan chapters are poetic and rhythmic in composition while Madinan Chapters are in
prose like in composition.
 Makkan chapters mostly deal with the belief system of Islam (‘Imān) while Madinan
chapters deal mostly with acts of worship and social interaction.
 Makkan chapters emphasizes oneness of Allah (Tawhīd) and Messenger-ship (Risalah) of
Muhammad (SAW) while Madinan chapters elaborate aspects of worship (Ibādah) i.e.
Ṣalat: Prayer, Ṣawm: Fasting, Zakāt: Compulsory Charity and Ḥajj: Pilgrimage.
 All the revelations of the 13 years to the Prophet in Makkah are called Makkiyyah while
revelations in Madinah (10 years) are called Madaniyyah.
LEARNING STRATEGIES & ACTIVITIES:
The teacher presents the lesson to the students through learning activities which include the
following as he encourages critical thinking, collaboration and communication in order to
develop leadership and personal skills in them:
Activity 1: The students read the key vocabulary words with their meaning as shown
by the teacher
Activity 2: They collaborate to describe and state the meaning of Devine Revelation
Activity 3: They work together to mention the numbers of Suwar in the Holy Qur’ān
Activity 4: They classify the Suwar (chapters) into two major groups ie Makkah and
Madīnah
Activity 5: They in pairs identify the features of Makkan and Madīnan Suwar while
the teacher gives examples to drive home the points.
ASSESSMENT (EVALUATION):
The teacher assesses the lesson through questioning such as:
i. What is the total numbers of the verses of Al-Qur’ān
ii. State the numbers of the words contained in the Qur’ān
iii. The Qur’ān was revealed to the Prophet for how many years?
iv. Makkiyyah simply means ____ in English
v. Madaniyyah stands for Madinan Chapters, True or False
vi. _____ chapters were revealed in Makkah and _____ in Madinah
vii. Outline features of Makkan and Madinan chapters
WRAP UP (CONCLUSION):
The teacher wraps up the lesson by briefly recaps the lesson and correct any mistakes
observed during evaluation.
ASSIGNMENT:
The students are asked to identify five importances of writing/copying notes in schools
and to make sure they complete their notebook for marking
