ENHANCED DIAGNOSTIC TECHNIQUES FOR MARINE DIESEL
ENGINES: ACHIEVING IMO DECARBONIZATION COMPLIANCE
be ensured through periodic performance analysis and diagnostics of the engine's key
components responsible for the quality of the working process. Performance analysis
allows for optimizing the operation of cylinders, evenly distributing the load between
them, and timely identifying dangerous trends in the engine's technical condition.
Parameter analysis also helps reduce the overall vibration levels of the engines,
achieve fuel consumption close to the rated values, and improve the overall energy
efficiency of the vessel in accordance with IMO requirements.
Some defects can be identified through the analysis of indicator diagrams
P(°CA) and the main parameters of the working process calculated from them, such
as Pmax, Pcomp, MIP, ignition angles, and fuel ignition delay periods. Examples of
such defects can include deviations in MIP, Pmax, or end compression pressure, as
well as increased ignition delay periods, and others.
The analysis of one of the most typical defects in cylinder operation - reduction
in end compression pressure (Pcomp) – is associated with ambiguities. The reduction
in Pcomp can be caused by several diverse reasons, such as wear of cylinder liners,
wear, breakage, and/or sticking of piston rings, valve leakage, or malfunctioning
valves timing. All these causes will result in the same consequence - a decrease in the
parameter Pcomp, followed by Pmax and MIP [3]. Thus, the true cause of the defect
may remain uncertain.
Similarly, to the defect of decreased Pcomp, some other defects that manifest
on the P(°CA) diagrams can be caused by various reasons. A typical example is
malfunctions in the high-pressure fuel equipment operation. These defects often
occur during continuous engine operation. For example, late combustion process,
which is determined by the phases of fuel ignition points on the P(°CA) diagram, can
be a result of late fuel injection and/or wear of precision components in the high-
pressure fuel equipment, leading to a decrease in fuel pressure before the injectors at
the moment of injection. Therefore, determining operational defects based solely on
the analysis of P(°CA) diagrams may not be accurate.

PRACTICAL PECULIARITIES OF BALLAST WATER CONTROL IN
ACCORDANCE WITH D-2 REGULATIONS
Danylyan A. G., senior lecturer of the department «Ship power plants and systems»
Danube institute of the National university «Odesa maritime academy»
forced to divert additional funds from turnover or take large loans in the banking
sector
Outline of the main material. It is necessary to recognise that the whole
world ocean is filled with migrants who do not develop more successfully than the
inhabitants of these waters. It is enough to consider the Azov and Black Sea in the
territorial waters of Ukraine, where today whole fish species have been destroyed:
Black Sea mackerel, Kalkan, Azov sardinella, a number of sturgeons [1]. The
piranhas that were caught in the mouth of the Dnieper River weighed up to 43 kg,
which is a rather rare mutation of this small predatory species.
At the 71st session of the IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee on
3-7 July 2017, the draft amendments to the text of BWM 2004 were adopted, which
relate to in particular, the timing and stages of implementation of the D2 standard
requirements for different ships. The draft amendments were circulated to Member
States by IMO circular letter dated 08.09.2017 р. № 3771.
According to the Convention, ships, according to the implementation schedule,
must comply with standards D1 or D2. Standard D1 requires ships to exchange
ballast water and defines the volume of water to be exchanged. This standard
involves the exchange of discharge water for new seawater; this must take place at
least 200 nautical miles from the the shore and at a depth of 200 metres. The D2
standard is more stringent and requires the use of a ballast water treatment system.
The system must ensure that only a small level of viable organisms to minimise the
impact of shipping on the the environment. According to experts, the most costly
item for shipowners is of bringing ships into compliance with the requirements of
BWM 2004 is meeting the "D2" standard, which can be achieved by installing a
ballast water management system (BWMS) [2]. The cost of such a system may
exceed USD 1 million.
Regulation D-2. Ballast water quality standard.1. Ships managing ballast water
in accordance with this regulation shall this regulation shall discharge less than 10
viable organisms per cubic metre, with a minimum size of 50 micrometres or more,
and less than 10 viable organisms per millilitre, the minimum size of which is less
than 50 micrometres and equal to 10 micrometres or more; the discharge of indicator
bacteria does not exceed the established concentrations described in point 2. -
Indicator microbes, as a standard of human health, include: a). toxicogenic Vibrio
cholerae with less than 1 colony forming unit (CFU) per 100 millilitres or less than 1
CFU per 1 gram (raw weight) of zooplankton samples;
b). escherichia coli less than 250 CFU per 100 millilitres; c). enterococci less
than 100 CFU per 100 millilitres [3].
The practicalities of ballasting and de-ballasting of ships in ports during
loading and unloading operations will require constant monitoring by shore services.
Considering the loading speed of containerised packaged cargoes leads to constant
roll and diference of the vessel in order to avoid dangerous roll and diference values.
In order to fulfil the requirements of Regulation D-2, modern ballast water treatment
and disinfection plants should, in case of exceeding the norms, immediately stop the
overboard discharge of ballast with light and sound alarms in case of exceeding the
norms. As for the control of ballast discharge and ballast content in tanks, this control
in ports was cancelled by the President of Ukraine.
Recently, the latest technologies have been developed to control ballast water
discharge remotely, including satellite control, which of course will require
widespread use of such control in all latitudes of the world ocean.
There are new reports in IMO materials about violation of ballast tanks sealing
on some ships, which resulted in ballast water overboard and into ship's holds. The
port authorities made applications to the International Courts on these cases, which
resulted in penalties being imposed on the shipowners.
Conclusions. In fulfilling the requirements of Regulation D-2, we will face
many more challenges. The installation of even the most modern design for ballast
water treatment and disinfection does not completely solve the problem. It is
necessary to have a comprehensive design of the measures taken: the new installation
must be in full combination of good technical condition of the hull and ship systems.
It is necessary to work out unified normative base to cargo operations of high-speed
loading and unloading of cargo in ports.

RESEARCH ON THE IMPACT OF THE CORROSION OF THE
NAVIGATIONAL EQUIPMENT ON THE SAFETY OF NAVIGATION
Yuriy Shulga, сapt., senior lecturer at the department of navigation and ship

occurred, while at a high AC current density, pitting corrosion occurred on the pipe
surface. In general, the AC interference enhanced localized corrosion.
Corrosion can commonly appear on internal components of navigation
equipment, such as connectors, contacts, circuit boards, integrated circuits and inside
closed electronic compartment and/or cabinets [2]. Humidity, oxygen and salt in the
air act as accelerants to the already continuously occurring corrosion process.
Eliminating corrosion in electrical and electronic enclosures has proven to be very
arduous due to the complexity and the fragility of the components inside the
enclosure. The traditional methods of corrosion prevention, such as coatings, are not
an option as they would affect the performance of the electronics. As it is difficult to
detect most corrosion on marine electronics before its effects are felt, a common
mitigation strategy is to manage the environment in which the electronics are housed
and used. [2]
Mitigating the threat of corrosion on navigational equipment involves a
targeted approach to corrosion prevention and maintenance. To reduce the impact of
corrosion on navigation equipment, it is important to carry out regular inspections,
preventive maintenance and use corrosion-resistant materials. Additionally,
implementing redundancy in critical systems can improve overall navigation safety
by ensuring that even if one system is affected by corrosion, a backup is in place.
For further research, will identify areas for ensuring the safety of navigation in
the face of corrosion threats:
− Corrosion-resistant materials: Materials that are less prone to corrosion
should be used in the manufacture of navigation equipment. Stainless steel, aluminum
alloys and corrosion-resistant coatings can help protect sensitive components;
− Regular inspections: Implement a comprehensive inspection schedule for
all navigation equipment. Regular visual inspections and, if necessary, non-
destructive tests can detect early signs of corrosion. Pay attention to vulnerable areas
such as connectors, wiring and antennas.

COLORIMETRIC DETERMINATION OF TOXIC SUBSTANCES IN
WATER AND SOIL USING ZnO/ZnFeO4 HETEROSTRUCTURES
Nanozymes are nanomaterials with their own enzyme-like activity. They have
found applications in various fields such as biosynthesis, environmental protection,
bioelectronic sensing devices, etc. These nanomaterials act as preventive antioxidants
by detoxifying harmful peroxides from blood, milk, water, and organic substrates. It
was confirmed that film heterostructures ZnO/ZnFe2O4 are widely known as
successful nanozymes, and they behave like a peroxidase in catalysis of 3,3', 3,5' -
Tetramethylbenzidine (TMB). These nanocomposites can directly trigger and
accelerate the oxidation of peroxidase substrates in the presence of hydrogen
peroxide (H2O2) [5]. In the work we have presented, the possibility of film
heterostructure was studied to show the properties of the mimetic of the enzyme
peroxidase.
Glyphosate is a broad-spectrum organophosphorus herbicide, which causes
plant death by inhibiting the activity of 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphatase in an
important plant metabolic pathway. In the past few decades, due to its high herbicidal
activity, it is widely used in vegetation control in agriculture. Although the
assessment agency lists it as a low-hazard compound, studies have shown that
glyphosate can affect cell regulation, cause chronic kidney disease, and even cause
cancer. At present, the abuse of glyphosate has caused the pollution of soil, water and
agricultural products. Such harmful trace residues can easily enter the human body

UTILISING OF METHANOL AS MARINE FUEL
The shipping industry has faced limitations in its quest to adopt cleaner, cost-
effective, and practical alternative fuels. Among these alternatives, green methanol
has gained global attention as a top contender. Methanol, an organic chemical
employed in various applications like paints, plastics, construction materials, and
automobile parts, has garnered interest due to its relatively lower emissions of CO2,
particles, and sulfur compared to Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) [1].
Certainly, it's important to note that methanol combustion still results in CO2
emissions (1.4 kilograms per kilogram of methanol compared to 3.1 kilograms per

Additionally, for the widespread adoption of this new fuel, both port operators
and fuel producers face hurdles. Port operators must invest significantly in equipping
facilities for methanol bunkering, and fuel producers must scale up production to
meet demand. Nevertheless, the growing trend of ordering methanol engines is
driving demand for green methanol, leading to a substantial increase in investments
in production plants within the industry [5].

ASPECTS OF SHIPBUILDING DEVELOPMENT: REALITY AND
PROSPECTS
In the time of antiquity, military and merchant ships already existed. The bow
of military vessels was a specially shaped ramming device, lined with bronze, to
easily pierce the enemy's side and then diverge from the affected vessel to allow
water to fill the breach. The rams could be made in the shape of different animals, as
shown in Figure 1. Let's move on to merchant ships of the ancient period. The main
propulsion for them was the sail, and weight advantage was not crucial. They were
inferior to warships in speed and maneuverability, but far superior to them in
seaworthiness. Such ships were adapted for long autonomous voyages. Their bow
consisted of a wooden beam passing from the keel line to the bow and closing the
curved planking in the fore part (Figure 2).
The Carrack (shown in Figure 3) was a large sailing vessel of the 15th and 16th
centuries, quite common in Europe. A distinctive feature of the carrack is tall
superstructures on the bow and yut - forcastle and aftercastle accordingly. Such
constructions in a more primitive form are characteristic of earlier ships of Europe,
including the common in the north of Europe koggs. Before the development of ship
artillery, armed warriors, archers and crossbowmen were stationed on these
superstructures, protected by shields. Because of these designs, in English medieval
sources, carracks are sometimes referred to as "tower ships". Specific for carracks

was a high, "multi-storey" half-bank, protruding forward beyond the bow. The
galleon, which replaced carrack, is first of all distinguished by a more modest and
shifted from the foretop to the foredeck half-bank. Another distinctive feature of
carracks was the "onion" shape of the hull - the sides were rounded and curved
inwards. In addition to constructive considerations, this shape of the board made
boarding difficult, and before the development of ship artillery, in the heyday of
carracks, boarding was the main form of naval combat.
In general, the carracks, with the largest size among the ships of the time, a
strong hull with rounded sides and a large and well-armed crew, were the most
powerful ships of their time, and even a single carrack was a very difficult prey for
pirates or other enemies.
Conclusion. Considering all the above, the bow has been modified from
ancient rams to modern and advanced types such as the X-bow, bulbous bow and

FORMATION OF PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCES OF FUTURE
SPECIALISTS IN THE FIELD OF TRANSPORTATION TECHNOLOGIES
The transport sector plays a leading role in the process of modernization of the
Ukrainian economy and its stable development which is possible under the conditions
of effective development of transport systems. At the same time, many logistics
enterprises need innovative restructuring, and for this, competent and competitive
young specialists in the transport industry are needed.
Professional competences (L. Birkun, N. Gez, D. Himes, S. Kozak,
A. Khutorskyi, G. Kitayhorodska,V. Kostomarov, N. Lavrov, S. Savignon,
S. Savignon, M. Swain, O. Tsokur, O., and others,) imply the presence of complex
professional knowledge, skills and skills, a high level of theoretical and practical
training of the future specialist professional activity and the ability to apply the
acquired theoretical knowledge in practice.
But professional competences are not equated with the education of a person,
especially a young person specialist. It is a set of knowledge, abilities, skills, methods
of activity, professionally important psychological qualities necessary for the
specialist to implement effective professional activity. It is the result of high-quality
preparation by a specialist, a characteristic of owning a profession and implies a
conscious aspiration of a young specialist for this activity. The specialist's
competences are manifested in his activities and depend on the final result.
The formation of a person's professional competences occurs not only during
his professional activity. This process begins much earlier, even during institution
training of certain education and its continuation during the entire professional
formation, and even the entire life of a person. That is, the first stage of the formation

relevant professional competencies that enable him to be confident in himself and his
abilities. Communicative competences are an important component of the
professional competences of a future specialist in the transport industry - it is the
ability to effectively interaction which consists in the ability to communicate in a
variety of ways, form tasks, resolve conflicts, be able to interact with representatives
of various organizations, the ability to conduct negotiations, conclude contracts,
cooperate with participants the process of transportation, delivery of completed works
to the customer.
Therefore, the process of professional training should solve the task of
providing a person with a competitive profession, training a competent specialist who
is free to navigate in his main and related fields of activity, ready for constant
professional training and growth, social and professional mobility. And the main
indicator of the level of qualification of any modern specialist is his professional level
competences, and competent young specialists are the pride of any educational
institution.

DEVELOPING ENGLISH SPEAKING SKILLS OF FUTURE SPECIALISTS
IN MARITIME FLEET DURING THE BLENDED LEARNING
Communication is among the top soft skills employers require and the most
common are speaking skills that combine verbal communication, presentation and
constructive feedback [4]. As English is the official widespread language at sea,
teaching maritime English continues to require certain transformation that aims to
respond to contemporary trends and innovations in the maritime industry [2]. And
improvement of maritime students' professional communication skills during the
blended learning is of quite great importance nowadays.
The aim of our research was selected to investigate and systematize effective
technologies for developing English-speaking skills of future specialists in maritime
fleet during the blended learning.
Under blended learning is understood a combination of face-to-face learning
with online learning that creates a combination of teaching aimed to emphasize the
technology-based interpersonal interaction. The researchers mostly united in thought
that learning especially English speaking skills is more effective if it is in a face-to-
face class. At the same time, the implementation of blended learning in speaking skill
learning should not be considered as a substitute for conventional classes but rather as

education, taking into account the schedule of the educational process of the
institution and the mode of their training.
In addition, we note that, regardless of the method of conducting the course on
the formation of the professional image of future marine engineers, one should adhere
to the generally accepted rule that provides the basis for its construction, namely: a
clear definition of its subject matter, in accordance with which other educational
materials are being developed (lectures, group, practical and seminar classes, testing),
which contribute to educational activities students of higher education. Due to this, it
is possible to achieve the goal of the course, in particular, the student of higher
education achieves the appropriate level of formation of a professional image in a
specific professional direction. In the process of developing the program of the
special course «Fundamentals of the professional image of marine engineers»,
teachers should take into account the sequence of specific topics that are
fundamental. In order to motivate students of higher education, teachers should pay

attention to such topics of the special course, which are new for future seafarers and
should arouse interest, which will significantly activate them and create appropriate
communication during training sessions. The friendliness and interaction can consist
mostly of the higher education students taking part in the discussion of problematic
issues in their further work on the ship as part of a multinational crew. It should be
determined that problematic issues in which higher education students are interested
should be effectively used to encourage them to further educational interaction.
Thirdly, even taking into account the first and second points recommendations,
it is impossible to guarantee the effectiveness of the formation of the professional
image of the future marine engineers without the implementation and compliance
with the basic requirements for the basic professional training, where the specialist is
formed, namely: the introduction and development of information and
communication networks, i.e.:
the actual unification of networks into a single information space and the
application of cloud technologies for the transmission of audiovisual information in
higher education institutions;
creation of an innovative and educational environment in accordance with the
requirements of the International Convention on the Training and Certification of
Seafarers and Watchkeeping of 1978 (as amended) using modern information
technologies and training equipment and aimed at creating conditions for the
formation of professional competence at the level of ship operation;
creation of scientific and practical cadet groups for cadets of specialty

Fourth, the use of trendy learning technologies, which most systematically
shape the professional image of future marine engineers through the introduction of
coaching technologies in a maritime education institution.

DEVELOPING SOFT SKILLS AT MARITIME ENGLISH LESSONS
Life on a ship is challenging both physically and mentally even for the most
confident and skillful seamen. And if they want to succeed in their maritime job, they
need to master soft skills. At sea each crewmember has to be resourceful so there
shouldn’t be any place for conflicts and clashes. Thus, currently in shipping industry
along with seafarers’ hard skills their soft skills are equally important to get a
successful career.
Seamen work and live in the same place. With proper soft skills they may
prevent misunderstanding from rising. In fact, seafaring is a dangerous job and
effective communication between crewmembers can promote a safer workplace.
Communication is a great resource and can be considered as the most important
human tool for understanding, cooperation and activity [3, p. 103]. The ability to
communicate effectively in an intercultural environment includes an understanding of
differences in communication styles and cultural backgrounds [1].
In such shipboard working environment soft skills are not just crucial but
essential to ensure smooth operation.
According to research, presently, more than 60% of employers look for soft
skills when hiring people. A majority of them consider that soft skills can both build
and break a person’s career.
The use of soft skills is broad as they are applied in many spheres of life.
Focusing on soft skills concept and paying attention to many studies, we may suggest
our own definition such as soft skills are a set of social skills, interpersonal
communication skills and character traits that help a person in his private, social and
professional lives. As soft skills do not depend on person’s knowledge but on his
attitude and mindset, they cannot be learned theoretically, they need to be practiced
and experienced to be improved further.
As it is mentioned above, soft skills need to be trained in an experience so you
cannot really learn them in a class. But those skills have a very important
interpersonal aspect and may be taught and trained in group exercises.
One of the best strategies to develop soft skills is to meet and overcome
challenges. For this purpose, a maritime accident report may be used at Maritime
English lessons. A case-study method helps students enter the learning zone, get used
to it to reveal the problem on a ship that in turn expands knowledge on relations
between crewmembers. Challenges that are presented in a maritime accident report
make students analyze and assess communication between crewmembers, especially
in any explicitly competitive or cooperative shipboard environment, find the gaps and
suggest some alternatives. Students acquire and improve their soft skills by
discussing the challenges which require that future seamen grow and learn in order to
possess them.
In conclusion, soft skills are difficult to measure but they are useful in a huge
range of situations on board from conducting a meeting to maintaining a job, from
keeping a watch to having dinner in the messroom. In most situations that describe
life on a ship one soft skill or some soft skills become useful. That is why soft skills
are a range of qualities including communication, teamwork, problem solving, critical
thinking and other aspects of a human factor and relationships.

THE STRATEGIC COMPETENCE IN MARITIME ENGLISH LEARNING
PROCESS
ones; 5) use of “fading prompts”; 6) conclusions about the strategies that should be
used [2]. Strategic competence implies the presence of knowledge of verbal and non-
verbal means of communication to compensate for gaps in foreign language skills,
knowledge of word formation, grammatical forms, etc., which contribute to the use of
reasonable guesses; models of speech behavior and a set of speech actions to achieve
the set communicative task (communicative strategies); the appropriate skills and
abilities that enable the use of these strategies.
Rabab’ah (2005) findings concern the idea that developed strategic competence
enables the interlocutors to cope with unexpected problems. The seafarers cannot be
provided with ready-made ESP solution for every aspect or situation in their
professional environment [3].
The strategic competence empowers future seafarers to choose linguistic
elements appropriate to the context of the professional situation taking into
consideration types of communication, the participants, the knowledge of the English
language, sociocultural knowledge and awareness of the professional or social
situation.
The types of strategies should be developed during ME teaching as implicit
language knowledge and communication skills. These strategies are universal or
metacognitive.
To sum up, the strategic competence is a crucial component of communicative
competence. It enables speakers to manipulate the language, by utilizing different
communication strategies, to meet their communication goals, and to get their
messages across, thus contributing to future specialists’ linguistic self-confidence.

LEADING FACTORS AFFECTING THE SELF-DEVELOPMENT OF THE
MARITIME MANAGER
individual and professional responsibilities for the advantage of oneself and the team.
The main goal of self-management is to make the best of personal opportunities, to be
self-determined and to overcome external circumstances both at the enterprise of the
maritime complex and in personal life. [1]
The basic level of the self-management system is personal efficiency, based on
effective management of one’s own resources is carried out: time, space,
communications, finances. Personal efficiency or effective activity of a person is
impossible without achieving a certain level of development through self-
development. Self-development (individual development) is a process in which a
person obtains the ability to protect himself, manage current events, form positive
relationships with the surrounding world and enjoy life. The process of self-
development is carried out by overcoming obstacles and growing personal traits that
help to achieve intended goals and tasks (will, perseverance, stress resistance, the
ability to influence people, etc.). The following components are combined in this
process:
– personal development (personal growth);
– intellectual development;
– professional (qualification) development;
– care of physical condition (recovery).
The effectiveness of self-development of a manager of maritime industry
depends on external factors:
– organizational and socio-psychological conditions of professional activity;
– availability of modern information systems for him, as well as readiness to
work with them;
– methodical provision of conditions for professional development.
Researchers M. Woodcock and D. Francis picked out eleven potential
restrictions of a manager’s self-development:
1. Disability to manage oneself: disability to entirely use one’s time, energy,
skills; inability to handle the stresses of modern manager life.

REGARDING THE PSYCHOLOGICAL STRUCTURE OF THE
LEADERSHIP QUALITIES OF THE FUTURE MARITIME SPECIALIST
complex and critical conditions, as well as the ability to motivate people and move
towards a common goal.
It should be noted that in connection with modern challenges and threats in the
maritime industry, new requirements formulated in Manila amendments to STCW,
need a final analysis of learning results – knowledge, skills, acquirement, ways of
thinking, value orientations, professionally important properties of specialists in
navigation and ship management, which make up the content leadership competence.
Issues of leadership formation, development of leadership qualities and
competences of the specialists of maritime industry were the subject of attention
O. Bezlutskaya who studied theoretical aspects of the captain’s leadership qualities,
psychological foundations of their development in the higher maritime educational
institution [1].
Considering leadership from the point of view of ship crew management, it
must be said that effective leadership is the key to successful operation of vessels,
because leadership is a strong influencing mechanism that applies to the activities of
the ship’s crew in general.
P. Masik, studying the problem of the master’s making a decision in conditions
of intensive navigation, in particular in extreme situations, proves the importance of
intellectual, cognitive qualities and volitional properties of the captain. [3]
The authors [1; 2; 3; 5] consider the qualities that provide leadership behavior
of the ship’s crew in the context of maritime professions, in particular the block of
psychograms, which covers a complex of psychological qualities and provides a high
level of motivational and emotional sphere of a seafarers; dynamics and degree of

USING HUMAN BIORHYTHMS TO ENHANCE A SAFETY
MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FOR UKRAINIAN WATER TRANSPORT
COMPANIES
Introduction. The International System Management Code (ISM Code) for the
safe operation of ships and pollution prevention was adopted by the International
Maritime Organization (IMO) by resolution A.741(18) at the 18th Assembly in
November 1993. The ISM Code became mandatory as a result of the entry into force
of Chapter IX “Managing the safe operation of ships” of the SOLAS 74 Convention
on July 1, 1998. The main amendments to the ISM Code were adopted by IMO
Resolution MSC.273(85), which, in addition to the amendments in paragraphs 1.1, 5,
7, 8, 10, 14, amends paragraphs 1.2, 9, 12, 13.
Safety management and prevention of environmental pollution in each
shipping company is carried out through the Safety Management System (SMS),
which is an integral element of the unified management system for the activities of
the maritime deals.
The SMS of any shipping company in Ukraine must comply with the
requirements of the ISM Code and the approved order of MTU No. 904 dated
November 20, 2003, i.e. “Regulations on the navigation safety management system at
sea and river transport of Ukraine.”
Although the ISM Code for the operation of ships and pollution prevention is
an important international standard for ensuring the protection of people and the
environment at sea and inland waterways, it still has some weaknesses. Here are
some of them:
information within the SMS, water transport companies can more accurately
determine optimal periods for conducting hazardous tasks both during voyages and
cargo operations in ports. Aligning critical operations with favorable lunar phases can
enhance crew performance and reduce the likelihood of accidents.
The second thesis: Applying the Circadian Rhythms. Circadian rhythms
regulate biological processes within a 24-hour cycle. These rhythms can be harnessed
to identify the most efficient time intervals for safety checks and maintenance of
critical equipment. Taking into account the individual biorhythms of each crew
member can help optimize their work schedules, ensuring maximum alertness and
productivity during specific times of any day.
The third thesis: Applying the Ancient Eastern Biorhythms. The biorhythms
offer valuable insights into the individuality of humans. These rhythms, deeply rooted
in reflexotherapy, suggest that people possess internal rhythms that influence their
physical and emotional well-being in accordance with the seasons and times of the
day. These rhythms are connected to various aspects of an individual's life, including
health, energy levels, mood, and overall performance. By considering these
biorhythms, water transport companies can improve crew coordination, prevent
accidents, and promote a safe working environment.
Advantages of Human Biorhythms into the company’s SMS:
Enhanced Safety and Accident Prevention. By analyzing and evaluating the
mentioned biorhythms, water transport companies can accurately plan optimal
timeframes for executing critical tasks. This proactive approach minimizes the risk of
accidents caused by human error and increases the overall safety of ship operations.
Improved Crew Performance and Productivity. Understanding and
accommodating individual biorhythms can lead to more efficient crew scheduling,
ensuring that each member works during their peak performance periods. By aligning
work shifts with the most suitable times, water transport companies can enhance crew
alertness, concentration, and productivity. This approach optimizes task completion
and reduces the occurrence of fatigue-related errors.

The teaching method is a special form of organization of the educational process and
presentation of material. The method should be distinguished from the reception.
Acceptance of training is only part of the method, a separate type of lecturer’s work
with students. A set of methods and techniques of a certain type is already defined as
a teaching method.
Interactive teaching methods are teaching methods in pedagogy aimed at the
verbal and practical interaction of the teacher and students, as well as students among
themselves [3]. The basis of this method is the principle of feedback, when the
student receives answers, comments, advice from the teacher or fellow students
regarding his work in class. When students interact with each other, the teacher acts
as a coordinator and ensure that the participants of the educational process do not go
beyond educational and ethical norms. Discussions, debates, polemics are clearly
organized processes of comprehensive consideration of a problematic issue. The main
participants in the discussion should clearly argue their opinions, give real examples
and evidence. Brain storm is a type of survey that requires quick and short answers
without thinking. Participants can offer their ideas about solving an educational
problem. Practicing skills, Work in groups are two closely related methods that help
students practice the necessary professional skills and the ability to work in a team at
the same time. In this way, you can practice communication skills in a foreign
language and other practical tasks.
Active learning methods in contrast to interactive methods, direct participation
of students in the performance of practical tasks and exercises, sometimes without
interaction among themselves. At the same time, interactive communication with the
teacher is maintained. Such methods are the most effective, but applying them at the
early stages of training is ineffective. The student must acquire the appropriate
baggage of knowledge and basic skills. Such methods require high organization and
independence. Modeling of professional activity can be performance of any tasks in
classroom conditions or production practice. Teaching others when the student
assumes the role of the teacher, explains the material, answers the questions of other

students and can even assess their level of knowledge. This form of work requires

Practical teaching methods are methods, techniques and forms of education
based on the performance of practical tasks [3]. In this case, the teacher can give brief
introductory instructions, recommendations, and if necessary, take a direct part in the
process for example, to demonstrate an experiment. Practical work goes after
studying the section for consolidation, repetition of the material. Students perform
various written and oral tasks, work with computer programs. Laboratory work in
contrast to practical classes, involves the performance of tasks on the topic based on
the obtained results of experiments, experiments using measuring devices and other
equipment. Digital data are entered into special forms or notebooks and used to solve
problems and carry out further calculations. Exercises are used at any stage of the
educational process and help to engage the intellectual, communicative and searching
abilities of students. They may include answering questions, solving problems,
equations, correcting errors, drawing up comparative tables, graphs, etc. Creative

various knowledge and techniques. These learning methods include: writing term
papers and theses, conducting own research, as well as writing reviews, reviews,
articles, works, creating layouts, illustrations, programs and much more.
In the modern educational process, the problem of teaching methods remains
one of the most relevant in global pedagogical and research activities, which in the
conditions of transformational changes in higher education needs constant careful
study and scientific and practical substantiation of the issue: better experience of
innovation educational activities; characteristics of the content of interactive forms of
education, their specifics use in higher educational institutions.

TEACHING MARITIME CADETS SMCP AND SAFETY VOCABULARY
FOR SHIP MOORING AND UNMOORING IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE
CLASSES
maritime academies to instruct cadets in SMCP and safety vocabulary during their
English language classes.
The Significance of SMCP and Safety Vocabulary:
SMCP are internationally recognized and standardized expressions used by
maritime professionals to convey essential information clearly and concisely.
Equipping cadets with these phrases is crucial for effective communication and safety
during ship mooring and unmooring. Furthermore, a solid understanding of safety
vocabulary is paramount to identify and address potential risks and hazards,
promoting a culture of safety in the maritime industry.
Teaching Methods:
Incorporation into Curriculum: SMCP and safety vocabulary are seamlessly
integrated into the English language curriculum of maritime academies, ensuring
cadets receive systematic instruction.
Contextual Learning: Lessons are designed to provide cadets with the context
in which SMCP and safety vocabulary are used. This allows them to understand not
just the words but also their practical application.
Simulated Scenarios: Cadets participate in simulated ship mooring and
unmooring scenarios during English classes. These exercises help them practice the
use of SMCP in realistic situations.
Role-Playing Exercises: Interactive role-playing exercises allow cadets to
simulate communication during ship mooring and unmooring. They assume various
roles, including deck officers, engineers, and communication officers, to enhance
their proficiency.
Multilingual Instruction: Recognizing that cadets may come from diverse
linguistic backgrounds, academies provide multilingual instruction, enabling cadets
to understand and use SMCP and safety vocabulary in their preferred language while
also mastering English.

RESEARCH ON THE FORMATION OF PROFESSIONAL AND
TECHNICAL COMPETENCES OF FUTURE SPECIALISTS IN THE FIELD
OF SEA CARGO TRANSPORTATION
Vypna Artem, the 1-st year cadet, EPP «Sea and Inland Waterways Transportation
Technologies»,
Danube Institute of the National University «Odessa Maritime Academy»
The relevance of the researched topic is due to the fact that at the current stage
of the formation of Ukraine, the needs of its development require educational
institutions of all levels of education to train highly qualified specialists who meet the
modern requirements, the socio-economic situation on the labour market, where, of
course, there is a demand for specialists who are able to manage at different levels
and in different areas which are characterized by such qualities as professional
competence, sociability, initiative, confidence, efficiency, tolerance and adaptability.
Under such circumstances, in our opinion, the pedagogical teams of educational
institutions need to make the transition to a new generation of industry standards of
higher education, based on the competence approach which is a necessary stage on
the path of reforming education in Ukraine.
Therefore, the application of the competence approach to the creation of
industry standards of higher education does not in any way change the acquisition of
knowledge, skills and abilities traditional for domestic education, but creates
prerequisites for a greater, flexible approximation of the results of education to the
needs and requirements of the modern labour market, further development of
educational technologies and the education system as a whole.
We know that the term «competence» is translated from the Latin language as
a range of issues in which a person is well-versed, has knowledge and experience. S.
Goncharenko considers professional competence as a person's mastery of the
necessary set of knowledge, abilities and skills which are determined by the
formation of pedagogical activity, communication of the person as a bearer of defined
values, ideals and consciousness [1].
The professional competence of a specialist, as noted by M. Kademiia,
presupposes the solution of various types of problems, tasks based on existing
experience, knowledge and values, and professional competences presuppose the
ability of a person to act successfully in the process of his professional activity which
makes it possible for any graduate of an educational institution to be professionally
successful [3]. In the process of training a future specialist, it is important to correctly
form his professional competence which includes: the specialist's ability to perform
his work competently, the ability to quickly master modern achievements in the
chosen field, enriching his knowledge, practical experience, improving his skills and
abilities independently, quickly making decisions in non-standard situations [2].
General competencies are the core of the model of a graduate of a certain
educational institution, as they are manifested not only in solving professional tasks,
but also tasks outside the boundaries of one's profession. Key competencies have a
dual nature. That is, on the one hand, they are not professionally determined; these
competencies must be possessed by modern specialists, regardless of the field of their
professional activity. On the other hand, key competencies are professionally
significant, as they form the basis, the base for professional competencies, allowing
them to be realized as much as possible.
Therefore, competence is an integrated result of education which is correlated
with the value and meaning characteristics of a person, has a practical orientation.
Ability is the mental and physical state of an individual in which he is ready to
successfully perform a certain type of productive activity.

activities dictates the expediency of rapid familiarization with them, starting from the
early stages of learning and cognition. The education system and science are among
the objects of the society's informatization process (Tymofyeyeva, 2023). It is
necessary to use information technologies along with methodological and
pedagogical approaches. This is particularly evident in the field of learning foreign
languages, where the application of digital technologies is undoubtedly associated
with the realization of their communicative functions. Communication plays a vital
role for seafarers at sea and ashore. The safe and efficient operation of vessels
depends to a large extent on the correct understanding of commands and
requirements from maritime and shore services. Therefore, in international crews, the
English language has long been recognized as the communication language.
Hence, the main purpose of teaching English in maritime education is to learn
professionally oriented English. Information and communication technologies
(STCW) help expand the knowledge of cadets in the field of maritime English.
Digital learning tools are defined as didactic and software tools designed for the
development of electronic educational resources, taking into account the needs of
learners, monitoring and controlling the effectiveness of the learning process, and
automating the educational process (Tymofyeyeva, 2023). Foreign language is an
educational subject that involves creating an artificial language environment for
students, leading to the variable inclusion of various digital learning tools in new
perspectives on teaching a foreign language. Digital learning tools are interactive
systems that allow simultaneous work with animated computer graphics, sound,
video frames, static texts, and images. The user, the student, is simultaneously
influenced through various information channels, where an active role is assigned to
them. In the constantly evolving diversity of existing and constantly updated tools, it
is necessary to create and update in real-time a certain typology of digital
technologies in foreign language teaching, determine the possibilities of their use, and
model the methodology of working with them in the conditions of changing
methodological paradigms. The perspective of successful implementation of

ENHANCING CADET TRAINING IN SHIP MOORING AND UNMOORING:
CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS
Maritime education plays a pivotal role in preparing future seafarers for the
complexities of the shipping industry. Among the various skills and knowledge areas,
the training of cadets in ship mooring and unmooring is of utmost importance.
their curriculum. Emphasizing safety practices from the outset of training ensures that
cadets are well-prepared to prioritize safety in their future maritime careers.
Technology and Equipment Training. Cadet training should include education
on modern mooring equipment and technologies to keep them updated with industry
advancements. Familiarity with the latest tools and techniques is essential for safe
and efficient operations.
Continuous Assessment and Feedback. Implementing continuous assessment
and feedback mechanisms is vital to monitor cadets' progress and provide them with
constructive guidance to improve their mooring and unmooring skills.
Interdisciplinary Training. Effective communication and teamwork are
fundamental in mooring and unmooring operations. Maritime academies should offer
interdisciplinary training that prepares cadets to work seamlessly with diverse teams
to ensure smooth and coordinated ship mooring and unmooring.
Enhancing cadet training in ship mooring and unmooring is critical to the
safety and efficiency of maritime operations. By addressing the challenges through
practical experiences, simulators, industry collaboration, standardized safety
protocols, and a focus on modern technologies, maritime academies can better
prepare cadets for the complex demands of the shipping industry. Ultimately, a well-
rounded education in mooring and unmooring will empower cadets to become
competent and safety-conscious professionals in the maritime field.

- соціальний аспект;
роботи;
діяльності;

MODERN MODELS OF LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT STYLES IN
THE MARITIME INDUSTRY
The maritime industry has always been known for its challenging nature and
leadership requirements. As in today's world the maritime industry plays a key role in
the transportation of goods and the safety of navigation, the study of its management
and leadership styles has become particularly important.
It should be noted that there is a difference between leadership and
management.
Leadership is the ability to influence the behavior of individuals or a work
group by using personal qualities that meet the external and internal needs of the
group. Leadership is based on social interaction in a group of people, on the
recognition of professionalism and competence.
Management is the process of influencing subordinates with the help of formal
levers to ensure that they carry out officially defined assignments and solve certain
problems [1].
The first attempts to study the effectiveness of leadership style were made in
the School of Group Dynamics under the leadership of K. Levin. They distinguished
three leadership styles that are still widely used: authoritarian, democratic and liberal
[2].
1. The authoritarian leadership style is characterized by the leader's pronounced
power, directive actions, sole authority in decision-making, and systematic control
over the actions of others. Such a leader limits the functions of group members to
executive ones - for him, the ideal subordinate is a disciplined performer.

MODERN MODELS OF STAFF MOTIVATION IN "MSC" SHIPPING
COMPANY
values their safety, interest and opportunities for personal and professional
development.
The shipping company uses the following motivation methods:
Economic (direct) – piece-rate pay; hourly pay; bonuses for rationalization and
invention; payment for employee training; rating bonuses.
Economic (indirect) – bonuses for work experience; preferential vacation;
preferential use of transportation.
Non-monetary – occupational health and safety; labor enrichment; flexible
work schedules; labor quality improvement programs.
At "MSC", rewards are focused on promoting high employee productivity.
The company offers rewards that are relevant, flexible and fit the individual lifestyles
and preferences of its staff. "MSC encourages all of its offices and divisions around
the world to develop appropriate programs to improve well-being, while placing a
global focus on mental health.
Employees can expect at least the following benefits:
Base salary, which is the centerpiece of the remuneration system. It is based on
the market price and increases with high productivity, as well as personal skills and
capabilities of the employee.
Bonus plans that are aligned with the position and company goals, allowing
employees to share in the success achieved through their efforts.
Social benefits, including life insurance, medical care, retirement savings, paid
vacation, etc.
Wellbeing programs that support employee health and well-being, allowing
them to focus on their well-being, both at home and at work [1].
"Mediterranean Shipping Company" is known for its commitment to
continuous professional development of its staff, which provides opportunities for
personal development and specialized knowledge that broadens career horizons.
Every manager in the company has the opportunity to participate in the Leadership
Development for Department Heads program. This program is aimed at developing

participants in the field of business and leadership, providing them with a holistic
understanding of accounting theoretical knowledge and its practical application.
Graduates of the program are ready and qualified to perform tasks as an operational
supervisor or senior manager.
At the initial stage, "MSC" managers take into account individual approaches
to employee motivation during interviews.
Finding individual approaches to motivating employees is important on the
way to implementing the company's policy. Two models are possible here:
1. The "materially oriented" employee mainly focuses on receiving monetary
remuneration, especially in cash, and prefers instant material satisfaction. Other types
of remuneration do not attract his attention.
2. The "professionally motivated" employee considers the realization of his
professional skills, knowledge and capabilities to be the most important condition for
his work. The content of the work and its nature are important to him. He/she strives
to develop his/her professional dignity [2].
Non-financial rewards use methods such as expanding responsibilities or
special events that promote the employee's sense of importance. For example,
expanding the responsibilities of an office manager or organizing a meeting where
every employee can express their opinion and be heard. Promoting employees
through the ranks has also proven to be an effective way. In fact, this method is
relatively inexpensive, but it can encourage employees and increase their status.
Conclusions. Modern models of staff motivation in "MSC" Shipping Company
reveals a dynamic and multifaceted approach to enhancing employee engagement and
performance. As the maritime industry continues to evolve, the importance of
adapting motivational models to address the changing landscape becomes
increasingly apparent. The company must remain agile and responsive to emerging
trends, considering factors such as technological advancements, industry regulations,
and the evolving expectations of the workforce.
