I. LAYUNIN At the end of the lesson the pupils are able to:
1. Identify the features of texts that discuss cause and effect; and
2. Determine whether the purpose of the text with cause and effect is
persuasive or informative.

A. Introduction
(Panimula) PRETEST

Directions: Read and understand the text, then, do the activities that follow:
Global warming is an environmental issue referring to the gradual increase of
temperature the planet. Scientists have been studying this since the 1700s
during the Industrial revolution. And now, there is enough evidence to show
that global warming is real, and it is causing massive climate change. Global
warming affects people in many ways. Because of hot climate many people are
getting sick. The increasingly hot climate also lessens the food production, so
many people are getting less food supply. This results in higher prices of
commodities, so the poor get less food to eat. As a result, they become more
prone to illness. In some places, the climate becomes too cold for short periods
of time, also affecting food supply. In both cases, the farmers lose so much
money, because they are not able to sell as much crops as they need to in
order to gain profit.
A. Fill-in the graphic organizer with the correct information from the text (3
pts.).
B. On the blank provided, identify whether the statement is the cause or the
effect (1 pt).
__________________ The climate becomes too cold for the crops.
__________________ Farmers are not able to harvest enough crops to gain profit.
C. Underline the words in the sentence which signals that this is an effect
(1pt.).

As a result, they become more prone to illness.

RECAP
In the previous lesson, you learned how to use various types and kinds of
sentences for effective communication of information/ideas by distinguishing
compound sentences from complex sentences.
Let’s have a short practice on that. Below are two boxes with different clauses.
Match the clauses correctly using the transitional device. You can interchange
the position of the clauses.
LESSON
B. Development
(Pagpapaunlad)

Read the Text.

Global warming has a lot of bad effects to the environment. Because of global
warming, the polar ice caps melt faster than before. So, animals that rely on
thick ice for hunting cannot hunt effectively for food. As a result, animals like
the polar bear are forced to leave the ice caps and look for food in other places.
When the cold water from the melted ice also mixes with warm water, ocean
currents become slower. The changes in the temperature and movements in
oceans result in changes of climate patterns around the world.
There are many things that cause global warming. Some are natural causes
and some are man-made. One of the natural causes of global warming is the
volcanic vents that release hot gasses. Another source of heat that warms the
planet is the sun. But the reason why the heat from the sun is trapped in the
atmosphere is high level of greenhouse gasses that trap the heat and warms
the lower part of the atmosphere.
The man-made causes of global warming include the burning of fossil fuels.
The gasses from fossil fuels trap the heat from the sun, so the heat stays and
makes surface of the planet warmer. Another man-made cause of global
warming is the cutting of trees in forests. Trees absorb greenhouse gases that
trap the heat of the sun, so if there are few trees left to absorb the heat 9

of the sun, the planet will become hotter. That is why we need to promote tree
planting in different places.
Now, that you are done reading, go back to the K-W-L chart and fill in the last column. Then,
complete the T diagram below on a separate sheet of paper:
The text you have just read is an example of a text that uses cause and effect. While reading
the text you must have noticed that there are certain word signals. Some words signal or
indicate the causes of actions or situations in a text. Some words give a clue about effects or
results of these actions. Let’s go back to the text and study its features:

ACTIVITIES

Activity 1
Directions: Read the paragraph. Underline the causes and encircle the effect.
Draw a line from the cause to the effect. The first one is done for you. If the
effect is also a cause, just draw an arrow from that effect to another cause.

C. Engagement
(Pagpapalihan)
Activity 2
Directions: Using your reading skills, try to fill in the graphic organizer based on
the text in Activity A.

Did you notice that some causes are also effects of some other process? Did you
also notice that some effects can also be the cause of other effects?
A. Study the cause and effect diagram you just created. In a short paragraph
discuss ways to solve the problem on climate change.

WRAP-UP
Take note of the following ideas:
 Cause – the reason why something happens.
 Effect – the result of a certain process or event.
 Some effects can also be the cause of other effects.
 Some causes are just effects of other causes.
 Signal words can help identify cause and effect.
 Sometimes, there are no signal words that introduce cause and effect. The
readers should identify the process that causes something and identify the
effect of that process or event.

D. Assimilation VALUING
(Paglalapat) How can this skill be used to solve the problems we encounter every day?

POSTTEST

Directions: Read the selection and fill in the graphic organizer.

A flood is a natural rising of level of water in an area that is usually
dry. Floods normally occur when there is too much rain in an area. In
most cases floods are caused by monsoon rains. When typhoons
occur, monsoon rains are even strengthened, causing more
devastating floods in areas near rivers and seas.
But in some cases, floods are caused by the clogging of waterways.
When there is too much garbage in the drainage systems, water could
not pass freely. As a result, flooding occurs. Flood occurs in some
places, because there aren’t enough trees to hold the water coming
down from mountains. So water slides down freely from mountains
down to the valleys or plains and floods the land.
Floods can be dangerous. Flood water can carry germs and bacteria
that cause diseases. Some floods cause landslides and mudslide that
destroy properties and claim lives. Floods can also destroy crops in
large areas of land. This results in shortage of food supply.
When this happens, crops and properties are damaged.
