lose their occupancy in the on-campus housing. If a student awarded a Yonsei scholarship
withdraws from the program, the scholarship will be cancelled.

Insurance Guide for Winter Abroad at Yonsei Students
Winter Abroad at Yonsei contracts and offers all students with Student Insurance Service. All
nationality students will be automatically enrolled in the insurance service. WAY will cover
the insurance fee, so students do not have to make additional or separate payment to the
Insurance company. Inquiries regarding Insurance can be made to the following contacts,

IV. How to make a claim
ㆍPlease pay the medical bills at the hospital first and then submit all your claim documents
to us, then we will hand them over to the claim department for reimbursement.
ㆍIn case of hospitalization (over 1,000,000KRW) insured could ask for the payment guarantee
but we need to get a permission from hospital.
ㆍPlease preparing all your documents and send them to us by fax or scan the documents
and upload it through our website. You could also make a claim using KAKAO TALK

▒ YONSEI UNIVERSITY LIBRARY GUIDE
Yonsei University Library has served as the center for Yonsei University’s scholarship, offering
quality information services to meet the learning, teaching, and research needs of Yonsei
community members by acquiring, delivering, and preserving a rich array of academic
resources. Yonsei University Library holds about 2.2 million volumes and provides access to
approximately 17,000 print journals, 71,500 e-journals, 476,000 e-books, and 200 academic
databases. The distinctive and unique rare book collection, which includes important Korean
classics valued as national treasures, number over 100,000.

In 2008, with the opening of the Yonsei-Samsung Library equipped with advanced IT
infrastructure, capacious research and learning spaces, cultural facilities, and exhibition
space, the Library complex became Korea's largest library in the size of 577,000 square feet
with about 5,300 seating space for library users.
Yonsei University Library features an open stack which provides quick and easy access to its
users, and uses Dewey Decimal Classification System. In 2013, the University opened the
Underwood Memorial Library at the International Campus to fully support its residential
college program. With its cutting-edge facilities, the library provides collections and services
idealized for the RC educations. In 2015, Yonsei University Library launched a smart academic
information system which enhanced usability and accessibility in mobile environment. In 2017,
the library opened a creativity space “Y-Valley” on the 1st floor of the Yonsei-Samsung Library
to help students collaborate, share future-oriented ideas, engage in teamwork, and give shape
to their thoughts using future technologies and platforms.

▒ The Health Service Center
Health Service Center provides undergraduate, and graduate students, and faculty with
health services, counseling, and education. The Health Service Center was originally
established in 1957 and still serves the university to promote its wellness.
As the primary health care facility of the University, the Center provides diagnosis and
prescriptions, trauma treatment, hematologic tests, urinalysis, vaccinations, chest x-rays,
and electrocardiograms, as well as dental hygiene services. The Center also provides annual
physical examinations for students and faculty. The Center is located on the second floor of
the Student Union Building.
Students can also obtain medicine through the pharmacy located at the Student Health

KRW 10,800~14,100 and an additional KRW 3,300~5,400 for each 2kg. Please note that when
you send general international parcels to the USA or Canada, you should have the package
insured in order to verify whether it has been delivered. The basic insurance rate is KRW 1,800.
ㆍ Express Mail Service (EMS)
EMS is a fast and safe way to send letters, documents, and parcels overseas insured by the
Korean government. Parcels containing documents cost KRW 10,200~17,900 if below 300g
and KRW 11,800~20,500 for up to 500g. Additional KRW 2,300~7,100 will be charged for each
500g depending on the distance (zones). Non-documents up to 500g cost KRW 15,500~24,800
and an additional KRW 1,600~8,700 for each 500g. EMS Premium rates are higher. It will
take 3~4 days to reach destinations with direct flights from Seoul. After sending your mail

Money Matters
The Korean currency is called the “Won.” It is issued in 1,000, 5,000, 10,000, and 50,000 won
bills; and in 10, 50, 100, and 500 won coins. In Korea, personal checks are not used. Special
bank checks called Supyo are common. They come in denominations of 100,000 won or
higher. Supyos issued by Korean banks and can be used as cash. When using a Supyo, you
will need to show a picture ID card and write down your personal information such as your
contact number and address.
It is very difficult to cash U.S. personal checks in Korea because they are not used as a form
of money in Korea. It can take up to three months to clear. Major credit cards, including Visa,
MasterCard, and American Express are widely accepted in most restaurants and stores in
Seoul. If you have a domestic bank, they may charge you an international fee when using your
credit card abroad. It is recommended that students bring either traveler's checks or a lump-
sum amount in a security instrument such as a cashier's check or international money order.
For example, when you call your friend living in New York, dial the numbers in the following order:

▒ Getting a SIM card
To subscribe to mobile phone service, you should select a provider. The main providers in Korea are SK Telecom,
LG Uplus, and KT. They provide differing service plans according to customers’ various lifestyles, so you can
choose an inexpensive service plan that meets your needs. You can pay for the service through various methods
including money transfer, credit card, CD/ATM, GIRO, online payment, online remittance.
You can easily purchase a SIM at the cell phone stores and you need to provide documents including a passport
and/ or a foreign registration card.
Transportation
Seoul is one of the largest metropolises in the world with a population of over ten million people. Due to the
dense population, traffic congestion is a serious problem in Seoul. However, a systematic, advanced public
transportation system provides convenience and helps alleviate this congestion.

▒ Banking ▒ Transit Cards

There are two branches of Woori Bank on campus:
Student Union Building (Map #207) / Yonsei Alumni Center (Map #016)
Please note that the branch offices are open 09:00 ~ 16:00 on weekdays and are closed on Saturdays, Sundays,
and holidays. There are ATMs stationed in most university buildings.
The simplest way of paying for transportation in Seoul is using a T-money transit card which can be used for
buses, subways, and most taxis. A T-money card is a prepaid, rechargeable card and can be purchased at ticket
windows or convenience stores (CU, GS 25, 7-11, etc). Using a T-money card is more convenient and saves money
since you can get a discount and convenient transfer from subway to bus, and vice versa.

The most efficient method of getting around the city is the subway. With eleven lines connecting various parts of

International Calls – When you make international calls, press the number of the phone ▒ Intra-City Buses

▒ Private Clinics
For minor health issues, a private health clinic is a good, economical alternative to general
hospitals, which charges international patients extra for English services. English-speaking
doctors can be found in the Korea Herald and Korea Times or at the 24-hour Medical Referral
Service run by the Seoul Help Center.

▒ Optical Services
You can purchase high-quality eyeglasses at a reasonable price. There are opticians and
optical shops in every neighborhood. Faculties can also buy a pair at the optical shop in the
Student Union Building 1F.

▒ Dental Care
Dental care in Korea is generally good and relatively inexpensive. The International Dental
Clinic in Yonsei’s College of Medicine (part of Severance Hospital) offers good care and has a
number of English-speaking dentists. The registration fee costs 15,000KRW. Teeth cleaning,
or “scaling” is 100,000KRW, fillings from 80,000-130,000KRW and x-rays 60,000KRW. (▶
02-2228-8622) The clinic is open between 8:30 am ~ 11:30 am and 1:30 pm ~ 4:00 pm on
weekdays, 8:30 am ~ 11:30 am on Saturdays.
