The off-site nursery inspection will be arranged approximately two months prior to the delivery on site. Plant material delivery neer at the time the schedules as shown in Appendix 2 will be given to the Er inspection is requested. The captioned planting works isto be carried out from mid September to the end of October 2002 Delivery of plant material Upon approval of material in the off-site nursery and delivery schedule by the Engineer, the plants will be delivered to the on-site temporary holding area designated by CSCEC and approved by the Engineer The plants in the off-site nursery will be well watered before dispatch They will be placed in baskets and delivered to site by closed top lorry, Transit time will be kept to.aminimum, The transport will usually be arranged to leave the off-site nursery at eement on the plant material dawn and arrive at site early in the morning to avoid damage to the plants as a result of excessive.transpiration. Additional quantities will be delivered to site as ransit id plants duri Upon arrival to the on site temporary holding area, the plants will be unloaded for the replacement for any dam: Engineer’s final inspection. Any damaged plant material will be removed off site. The root balls of accepted plants will be soaked in water and then loaded into baskets and transported to the planting site by helicopter arranged with Heliservices HK. Ltd in advance. Soil conditioner, fertilizer and containers of water will be airlifted at the same time to the planting site for backfilling the planting pits and watering the plants respectively. Coneaer No CV 20008 Method Statement for Compensatory Woodland Planang Dry, No. S007. 100°28388)Safety The workers will be equipped with suitable gears such as non-slippery boots and safety belts when working in steep areas, Setting out of planting area CSCEC will set out the boundary of the planting areas. Any discrepancy in Site area between that shown on the plan and the actual area on the ground will be notified to the Engineer as soon as it is discovered ite preparation General ground cleaning such as removal of undesirable undergrowth, weed, and litter will be carried out manually to each planting pit. Condition of the planting site will be inspected and approved by the Engineer prior to any planting operation. Scarifying The soil will be scarified to a depth of between 10mm and 20mm using rakes or hoes without turning the soil. Laying out of plants The laying out of plants will be carried out as shown on Drawing No 91800/L.100/2538B. The seedling/whips will be planted in groups of 7 nos per one species per each group and the understorey shrubs will be planted in groups of 6 nos per one species per each group Pioneer, canopy and understorey species will be distributed evenly as far as possible throughout the planting area Planting The horticultural workmen will gain access to the planting site on foot along the ridge of the summit. All plants are to be pit planted. Planting pits with dimensions 100mm wider and SO mm deeper than the specified root ball size will be dug to fully accommodate the plants and at the same time minimize exposure and erosion of slope surface during the planting works. After the plants have been placed in an upright position, the excavated planting medium will be mixed with soil conditioner and 20g of pre-planting fertilizer and then backfilled The soil will be firmed around the root ball during the backfilling operation Earth basin will be constructed around each plant to retain water. Care will be taken during the planting operation to minimize the washing out of excavated material Broadcast grass seeding will be applied to any bare ground areas after planting as directed by the Engineer in accordance with the hydroseeding mix specified on “Method Statement for Compensatory Woodland Plant (Dg. Nu. 014110 25388)Drawing no. 91800/L100/2541B, The grass seeding is best to be carried out in spring 2003 Watering Immediately prior to planting, the root balls of the plants will be soaked in water which is airlifted by the helicopter earlier in the day. The soaking of the root balls prior to planting is a general practice accepted by AFCD for woodland planting During the maintenance period, workers will cary manageable size water tanks to the planting area. Water will then be distributed manually by horticultural workers Maintenance Regular maintenance will be carried out in accordance with the maintenance programme as indicated on Appendix 3. Watering will be carried out on a weekly basis during the early establishment of the plants.
