Thesis Synopsis With Program - 201223
[Hypothetical]
Type: Institutional
Scale: 150 to 200 beds
Targeted disorders: Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia, Parkinson's and stroke
INTRODUCTION
According to a 2019 study by The Lancet global health, India is a home to nearly 3.69 million
people who are living with some form of dementia, 7.71 million people affected by
Parkinson's disease and a 1.29 million incident cases of stroke. However according to
WHO estimates only 5% - 15% of these disabled individuals have access to assistive devices.
Further, there is a severe disproportion in the number of care facilities that tackle such
disorder and existing care facilities are depressingly institutional.
• A well designed built environment can have a great impact on the physical, emotional,
cognitive and spiritual well being of its inhabitants.
• Especially for patients of neurological disorders a healthcare institute should definitely be
able to provide respite through its spatial quality to a great extent.
• Architecture as a discipline might not have the ability to cure such diseases but it
definitely has the ability to provide a comfortable, safe and even healing
environment while reflecting on the fact that these facilities might as well be the
final home for most of its residents.
THRUST AREAS OF SPECIAL STUDY
• To create a built environment that can ease the daily lives of patients
diagnosed with Neurological disorders and provide respite at the last stage
of their lives.
• To implement design ideologies, architectural elements, and principles
