Topic: End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable
agriculture
Delegation: Islamic Republic of Pakistan

Food security is built on four pillars: Food availability; food use; food access; and
food stability. When any one of these pillars is unstable, people live in a state of food
insecurity. Pakistan has been aiding undernourished families through the WFP initiated by
the UN. However, according to a study by IPC Acute Food Insecurity Analysis (October
2021) around 1.5 million people are still in a state of food insecurity. This status has
definitely improved since Pakistan's independence during which a massive amount of people
suffered from starvation.

For better or for worse, the road to accessible food is deeply connected with
sustainable and self-reliant agriculture.
With the fast-growing population, self-sustained agriculture is a must to ensure that the
people have unfettered access to food. The Hon. Prime Minister Imran Khan in his speech
addressing a farmer’s convention said,” Pakistan has new challenges and the biggest
challenge is food security”.To solve issues such as counterfeit milk production and food
insecurity the govt. of Pakistan imports the required goods. This is an effort to relieve the
nation from the clutches of hunger as the prices of imports rise annually. This was putting
pressure on the treasury and to generate revenue the National Hemp policy (mid-2020) was
put forth.

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has put people of the daily wage class, people
affected by droughts and locust attacks in a state of severe food insecurity.

Educating farmers about self-reliant agriculture and eco-sustainable agriculture

modes such as hydroponics and agroforestry will lead countries to increase the production of
food crops. Pakistan has already been providing solutions such as interest-free loans, direct
subsidiaries through Kisan card, training for small-scale farmers, cultivation of idle land,
zoning, interactions with farmers associations, and better transport and storage facilities.

Adding onto this, reduced imports will help the cultivation of food crops and yield
copious harvests that will help all nations recover from the current state of food insecurity.
