The Matrix Opening Scene

colour palette and connotations

The scene immediately starts out with a monochromatic

green colour palette, which connotes a sickly or unnatural
feeling. Green is also commonly associated with computer
code, especially in the 1990s. The same colour palette is
also used in early handheld gaming devices, such as the
Game Boy. This may connote that the scene is more of a
game than reality. The way the characters move during the
fight scene may reinforce this.

In this scene, Trinity (Carrie-
Anne Moss) wears a black costume, which may suggest she
is dangerous, since black is a colour commonly associated
with death, decay and evil deeds. This leads a viewer to
believe that Trinity is an evil character initially. However,
the “Agents” which attack her wear black suits, which react
more with the green setting. This links the agents to the
setting, telling the viewer that they are somehow a part of
the world of The Matrix.
