EMG is a method used to record the electrical activity of muscles using electrodes placed on the skin or inserted into muscles. The electrical signals from the muscles are amplified, recorded, and can be heard as sounds from a loudspeaker. EMG patterns show no activity at rest, increased activity during voluntary muscle contraction, and a crowded interference pattern during maximum effort. EMG is used to diagnose neuromuscular disorders, distinguish neuropathy from myopathy, and differentiate between upper motor neuron and lower motor neuron lesions.

EMG is a method used to record the electrical activity of
muscle. Electromyogram represents the recordings of summated potentials EMG consists of : 1. Electrodes : 2 types – surface electrodes which are kept on the surface of skin to record the activity of a whole muscle & needle electrodes to record the activity of a single muscle fibre 2. Amplifier – to amplify the recording 3. Recording device – to record the muscle contraction 4. Loud speaker – for hearing the sound while the muscle is contracting Pattern of EMG • Under rest no muscle activity so no contraction • During voluntary effort muscle starts contracting & recordings are obtained • During maximum voluntary effort recordings are crowded & the pattern obtained is called interference pattern Uses of EMG 1. Helps in diagnosis of neuromuscular disorders like muscular dystrophy & myasthenia gravis 2. Neuropathy can be distinguished from myopathy 3. Helps to differentiate between UMN &LMN lesions 4. Useful in prognosis of muscle diseases
