Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION

This chapter presents the introduction of the study.

The background of the study, statement of the problem,

statement of hypothesis, significance of the study, scope

and delimitation of the study and conceptual framework were

also described.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Academic stress is defined as the body’s response to

academic related demands that exceed adaptive capabilities

of the students. It is estimated that 10-30% of the students

experience some academic stress during the academic career.

Correlation between stress and associated factors. The

multiple linear regression indicated that stress was

significantly and negatively correlated with the

performance. Both the DES and PSS scores predicting a lower

GPA. Previous research that academic-related stress can

reduce academic achievement, decrease motivation and

increase the risk of school drop-out. The longer-term

impacts, which include educe likelihood sustainable

employment, cost government billion dollars each year.

Stress reduces students work rate, reduces ability to

learn in class and causes lack of concentration in class.

This in turn lead to producing poor quality work reduces

academic performance. Therefore academic stress has a

negative relationship with student performance.

Stress has become part of students’ academic life due

to the numerous internal and external anticipations placed

upon their bears. Adolescents are particularly vulnerable to

the problems associated with academic stress as transitions

occur at an individual and social level. It therefore,

becomes imperative to understand the sources and impact of

academic stress in order to derive adequate and efficient

intervention strategies. The study engaged a quantitative

research design where participants were screened using pole

survey, interview and questionnaire. The five dimensions of

sources such as emotional stress, modular distance learning

due to pandemic, teacher-students relationship, financial

stress and inadequate study facilities were further analyzed

and gender differences were also obtained. Understanding the

sources of stress would facilitate the development of

effective counselling modules and intervention strategies by

teacher and guidance counselor in order to help students

alleviate stress.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study will be conducted to determine the Level of

Academic Stress Affecting the Academic Performance of Grade

12 Humanities and Social Sciences Students in Inarawan

National High School.

Specifically, the study attempts to answer the

following:

1. What is the level of academic stress affecting the

academic performance of Grade 12 Humanities and

Social Sciences students in terms of:

1.1 Emotional Stress

1.2 Modular Distance Learning

1.3 Teacher- Students Relationship

1.4 Financial Stress

1.5 Studying Facilities

2. Is there a significant difference on the level of

academic stress to the academic performance of Grade

12 Humanities and Social Sciences students in terms

of:

2.1 Emotional Stress

2.2 Modular Distance Learning

2.3 Teacher- Students Relationship

2.4 Financial Stress

2.5 Studying Facilities

3. Is there a significant relationship on the level of

academic stress and academic performance of Grade 12

Humanities and Social Sciences students?

STATEMENT OF HYPOTHESIS

1. There is no significant difference on the level of

academic stress to the academic performance of Grade 12

Humanities and Social Sciences students.

2. There is no significant relationship on the level of

academic stress to the academic performance of Grade 12

Humanities and Social Sciences students.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study will be significant to the following:

Teachers. The result of this study will make them realize

that academic stress affects the academic performance of the

students.

Students. The result of this study will help the Grade 12

Humanities and Social Sciences students to attain emotional

stress-free, inspiration on modular distance learning due to

pandemic, improve teacher-students’ relationship, financial

stress-free and resolve inadequate study facilities problem.

Future Researchers. This study will serve as their basis or

reference on their future research.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION OF THE STUDY

This study will focus on the level of academic stress

affecting the academic stress of Grade 12 Humanities and

Social Sciences students of Inarawan National High School.

The researchers will use survey questionnaire composed

of questions related to the level of academic stress

affecting the academic performance of Humanities and Social

Sciences students.

The respondents of this study will be limited to Grade

12 Humanities and Social Sciences students of Inarawan

National High School with the population of not less than 30

students.

This will be conducted during the 1st semester of

Academic Year 2020-2021.

CONCPTUAL FRAMEWORK

The researchers draw the conceptual model used as

reference in dealing with the topics of this study.

Academic Stress of HUMMs

students in terms of
1. Emotional Stress
2. Modular Distance Academic Performance
Learning of HUMMs students
3. Teacher-Student
Relationship
4. Financial Stress
5. Studying Facilities
Figure 1: “Hypothesized Relationship among the variables of

the study”

Figure 1 shown the conceptual model of this study

which represented two (2) major variables. The first

variable which is the independent is the academic stress of

Humanities and Social Sciences students in terms of

emotional stress, modular distance learning, teacher-student

relationship, financial stress and studying facilities. The

second variable is the dependent variable is the academic

performance of Grade 12 Humanities and Social Sciences

students.

A single headed arrow placed between variables

indicated that they are correlated.

A double headed arrow placed on independent variable

indicated that the level of academic stress specifically in

emotional stress, modular distance learning, teacher-student

relationship, financial stress and studying facilities has

differences.
