Experiment Title: Design and study of a band-bass active filter using 741
op-amp with the following specifications:
a. The cutoff frequencies are 285 Hz and 5.7 kHz.
b. The maximum voltage gain within the cutoff frequencies is 6.
OBJECTIVE:
To Design and study of a band-bass active filter using 741 op-amp where the
cut of frequencies are 285 Hz and 5.7 kHz and the maximum voltage gain
within the cutoff frequency is 6.

THEORY:
When the filter circuit passes signals that are above one ideal cutoff frequency and
below a second cutoff frequency, it is called a bandpass filter . A bandpass filter
using two stages, the first a high-pass filter and the second a low-pass filter, the
combined operation being the desired bandpass response.

Today we will design and study a band-bass active filter using 741 op-amp where
the cut of frequencies are 285 Hz and 5.7 kHz and the maximum voltage gain
within the cutoff frequency is 6.
As we know, a band pass filter uses two stages filters and the first one is a high
pass filter . Now we see our requirement cutoff frequency for high pass filters is
285 Hz , F-ol = 285hz. And for the second stage is a low pass filter where F-oh is
5.7kHz. And we see our maximum voltage gain within the cutoff frequency is 6.

APPARATUS:
• Pspice software,
• 741 op-amp,
• Resistors,
• Capacitors
• Power supply,
• Multimeter,
• Oscilloscope.
• Wires

Calculation:

For high pass filter , Cutoff frequency is F_ol = 2 Π R C
1 1

Here we know F_ol = 285Hz

For C1 we consider the value , C1 = 0.002uF

Now if we can find out R1 , we can fulfil 285 Hz cutoff frequencies requirements .

Now, From the above equation we can write,

1
1
R1 = 2 Π F C = 2 Π∗285∗0.002 = 13.96 kilo ohm

For low pass filter , Cutoff frequency is F_oh = 2 Π R C
2 2

Here we know F_oh = 5.7kHz

For C2 we consider the value , C2 = 0.02uF

Now if we can find out R2 , we can fulfil 5.7kHz cutoff frequencies requirements .

Now, From the above equation we can write,

1
R2 = 2 Π F C = 2 Π∗5.7∗1000∗0.02 = 27.92 kilo ohm.

Voltage Gain:

Now , For the requirement , the maximum voltage gain within the cutoff frequency
is 6.
RF
For voltage gain, we know, A = 1+ R
G

We use two of 741 op-amp,

So our circuit’s voltage gain, A = A1*A2 [ A1 = high pass filter’s voltage gain,
And A2 for low pass filter’s voltage gain.]
As the requirements say that the maximum voltage gain within the cutoff
frequency is 6.
So A = 6
Now A1*A2= 6
So we can write , A1 = 6/A2
Now, we consider A2= 2, so we see, A1 = 3
So we need to maintain A1 = 2 , and A2 = 3.

Now for the high pass filter, The voltage gain A1= 3.
RF 1
From the voltage gain equation, A1 = 1+ R
G1

We can write , Rf1 = (A1-1) * Rg1 = 2 * Rg1,

Here we see, Rf1 is equal to two times of Rg1, For Rg1 we consider the value =
10k, So Rf1 = 20k
So , for A1 , Rf1 = 20k, and Rg1 = 10k.

Now for the low pass filter, The voltage gain A2= 2.
RF 2
From the voltage gain equation, A2 = 1+ R
G2

We can write , Rf2 = (A2-1) * Rg2 = 1 * Rg2,

Here we see, Rf2 is equal to Rg2,
For Rg2 we consider the value = 10k
So Rf2 = 10k

So , for A2 , Rf2 = 10k, and Rg2 = 10k.

Bandwidth:

High pass filter cutoff frequency is F_ol = 285Hz

Low pass filter cutoff frequency is F_oh = 5.7kHz

So the bandwidth= 5.7kHz - 285Hz = 5.415kHz

Discussion : On this experiment we design and study a band-bass active filter
using 741 op-amp where the cutoff frequencies are 285 Hz and 5.7 kHz and the
maximum voltage gain within the cutoff frequencies is 6. We design the circuit
using Pspice software. First of all we build the circuit, then using mathematical
calculations we find the value of registers and capacitors. Then we implemented
the values, and found out our requirements results. There we see, on pspice and our
theoretical results are not same, but very close.
