Year 10 Visit to Shrewsbury Prison, Thursday 29th June 2023

June 2023
Dear Parents and Guardians,

I write to you regarding the trip to Shrewsbury Prison in Activities Week that your child is signed
up for, which takes place on Thursday 29th June 2023. This letter provides further details about
the day.

Your child must be in school wearing school their normal uniform by 8.30am, and the coaches will
depart for Shrewsbury Prison from Warwick Hall at 8.45am.

Students will embark upon a guided tour of the now closed Prison to learn about its 200-year
history. They will hear first-hand what life inside a prison is like and experience all areas of the
prison including; two prison wings, the exercise yard, execution room as well as an ‘in-cell’
experience if they wish. Students will also take part in the ‘Education Behind Bars Programme’
which consists of workshops exploring the history of crimes and punishments over the centuries,
rehabilitation and capital punishment. They will receive an activity pack as well as a certificate of
completion.

We will be providing a packed lunch so there is no need to send your child with one. Please
indicate on the consent form if your child has any special dietary requirements. Pupils are
permitted to bring a small amount of money to spend in the gift shop if they wish.

We will be back in school by 4pm, when your child can then go home as usual. The cost of the trip
is £40, and this will be added to your Michaelmas bill.

If you have previously informed the school of any medical issues regarding your child (such as
allergies), then I am already aware of these, however if there have been any recent developments
that the school does not know about, then please let me know if you feel this is relevant. Your
child will also need to bring any medication with them if required (for example, an EpiPen).

Pupils will obviously be required to maintain the high standard of behaviour expected of them
throughout the day, and should know that any behaviour deemed to be unacceptable will be dealt
with immediately.

If you have any further questions regarding this day, then please do not hesitate to contact me.

Kind Regards,

Ashleigh Kirby
Acting Head of Psychology
