The first major theme aims to showcase the challenges that the participants
experienced on their daily school life as a young urban farmer. Studying while working
exposes them to a set of new responsibilities which may have some drawbacks for them.
Under this major theme is the difficulty with time management. John, one of the
participants, claims that whenever there is an urgent problem at the farm that needs to be
addressed, he sometimes neglected his studies. On the other hand, Kenneth emphasized
about how challenging it was to complete multiple responsibilities at once while working
John: “Ayun minsan kasi napagsasabay yung mga uhmm… urgent. Kung

suggested that because they were simultaneously considering their jobs and their
academic obligations, their reasoning might not be as clear. This is one of the most

lifestyle to do. After he visited the farm, he finds it challenging and exhausting because

Tapos yung pagod sa galing sa bukid. Eh yung bukid namin hindi simpleng tabing daan
lang. Sa papunta pa talaga ng ano ng gubat ganon papasukin pa. Ganon hassle.”
The young urban farmer usually spends their whole day for farm works and school
works. Given this, feeling exhausted at the end of a long day is inevitable. According to
Diksha (2021), working depletes our energy because it requires hard labor, which could
leave us feeling exhausted and lethargic when we start studying. A lazy mind and a
fatigued body will never enable us to study to the fullest extent. If our mind is not working

in tandem with our body, we may become lazy and subsequently decide not to learn, even
The last emerging theme under this major theme is about financial crisis as part
of the hindrances of a young urban farmer. When there are no crops to harvest and
sell, the participants, like Fe and Raul, find it difficult because their daily income for their

However, current financial issues have plagued college students and have grown to be a
significant issue for them. Students are known to suffer financial difficulties because they
lack the funds to cover their everyday expenses (Edubirdie, 2022). Young urban farmers

a college student. The participants contend with a range of scholastic challenges while in
college, including trouble focusing, understanding the subject matter, and maintaining
good marks. Since their main concern is getting bad grades, they must keep their
commitment to finish their schoolwork before beginning their duties at the farm.
Under this major theme includes the emerging theme about young urban
farmer’s fear of academic failure. The participants, Angel and Fe, expressed that they

Being a young urban farmer further complicates the participants' academic goals,
especially when it comes to keeping good marks. The majority of participants in the study

they are at the farm Fe always chooses to complete her schoolwork first because it has a
Setting priorities for our obligations, deadlines, projects, work, and everything else
can be a big step toward improving our effectiveness and efficiency. Prioritization,
according to Revolution Prep (2022), keeps students productive and organized while
ensuring they have enough time to complete homework, study, take care of household
duties, and participate in social and extracurricular activities. Prioritizing your tasks and
DRIVEN TO ACHIEVE
The third major theme discussed that being a young urban farmer employed good
judgement to get away from threats and uncertainties and has a strong desire to succeed
Under this major theme is the emerging theme about young urban farmers' drive
to provide for and sustain their families. It means a lot for the participants, like Lhyka
and Raul, to be able to graduate and meet the ends for their families.
Lhyka: “Kasi gustong gusto ko makapag tapos ng pag-aaral. Gusto ko rin maka-
help sa family ko kaya ayun. Saka ano pag nag palamon ako sa ganitong problema wala
ako mararating.”
Many people depend on the income from their jobs to support their social lives.
However, the young urban farmers are motivated to finish their degrees because they
want to provide for their parents and siblings. According to Pat Gregory (2018), future
graduates aim to feel the pride, success, and relief that former graduates can attest to
after receiving a college degree. When they obtain their diploma, they are both celebrating
a significant turning point in their own life along with the lives and livelihood of their entire
family. It can be challenging to finish college as an adult with obligations, but doing so is
The next emerging theme is the ability to find solutions to problems. The
participants are able to solve their problems when it comes to handling multiple

The last emerging theme under this major is having perseverance through all
the hurdles in order to thrive. It takes more determination and perseverance for the
participants to overcome the difficult moments. When the really tough battles come up, it
frequently involves pushing through obstacles and striving even when they don't want to

since they persevered and put up such much effort to obtain the rewards, they well

This fourth major theme comprises of the difficulties that the participants face in a
daily basis which ranges from handling a variety of task, managing one’s farm, carrying
out its obligations, up to how to preserve it. It is evident that farm life is not a simple life

of just simply planting crops and waiting for it to be harvested, but it comprises a lot of
activities to be fulfilled.
According to Kenneth, that whenever there is no farm works left for him to do does not
mean that he is free to take a break, instead he tends to take care of their farm animals
and clean the area when he has spare time. Fe, on the other hand, stated that she only
has light responsibilities whenever she has nothing else to do in their farm. Meanwhile,
Camia stated that it is difficult to balance farm work and her academic responsibilities at

Fellow (2022) stressed that even though managing multiple tasks at once may
seem challenging, using effective planning and prioritization strategies can help
multiple activities, young urban farmers have perseverance to fulfill their duties both in
farm. The main factor in successfully harvesting crops in a farm is learning how to
preserve, nurture, and take care of the farm environment and its crops. Kenneth stated
that his way of dealing with their farm preservation is through maintaining that they
maintain and secure that there would be enough water for them to use in watering the
crops.

she indicated that managing one’s farm irrigation is essential to the crop to be yield by
farmers. She also stated that another factor contributing to preserve and to have a
successful crop production is the presence of available water when the seeds start to
grow and that the amount of water that is needed vary to the farm’s location.
Water is not the only key factor in preserving a farm and its crop. According to
Lhyka, machineries are also involved in order to fully utilized the labor work and to save
time.
Lhyka: “Sa ngayon, pagdidilig tapos taga check-up ng mga palay. Minsan ako rin
inuutusan kapag may need akong bilhin na pataba o kaya naman taga ayos ng makina

Philippines, he found that several problems that common issues that farmers encountered
are the likes of regarding how to properly use agricultural machinery, the high cost of
equipment, the high price of fuel and oil for the utilization of agricultural machinery of small
farm holdings, and high repair and maintenance cost are damaged.
To further explore this major theme, managing farm crops had also been involved
as managing a farm is not easy for farmers as to several causes may affect the crops to
be yield in a single harvest. Hence, Angel’s experience in the farm, she expressed that
pests tend to destroy their crops by feasting on their farm before it was even harvested.
Raul on the other hand had contemplated the success of his harvest because he believed
that it is up to the weather to decide saying that if it happens, his hard work turns out to
be a waste of time.
This claim is evident from the study of Skendzic (2021) wherein she stated that the
current changes in the climate, extreme weathers, as well as destructive but adaptable
organisms such as insects and pests cause major impact on crop production.

Another emerging theme was found which deals with carrying out farm
obligations. There are a lot of activities when it comes to farming, and it can even affect
farmer’s own well-being. Kenneth said that being a young urban farmer is no easy task
since farming is long and complicated process. Michelle on the other hand, aside from
stating that farming is not easy, it also causes her physical strain in her body.
mahabang proseso ‘yon.

pagod.”
Gonzales (2018) stated that the life of a farmer is a busy and stressful one. To
reach their ultimate goal, a lot of tasks and work must be completed each day. The
beginning of a day on the farm is very early which is being done to complete tasks more
quickly. It may sound really exhausting to live on a farm, but because they are aware that
their work provides food for their families, these young urban farmers feel satisfied and
It has been also found that they considered farming activities serves as part of
training as farmers spend the majority of their day standing, lifting, hauling, and pulling
various objects and machinery. Kenneth basically needs to traverse every time he had to
farm or harvest. In turn, he said that due to this daily activity, his body become sturdy and

Farmer abilities includes the knowledge and skills that enable them to perform their
daily tasks. These can be use in a variety of ways, including communicating with
farmhands, tending crops, and repairing machinery. Farming enhances physical skills
when it takes as part of training and also can develop mental skills such as problem-
solving, organizing and communication. It is indeed that farming is not only farming itself
Another emerging theme that accompanied the major theme is that farming
knowledge allows young urban farmer to adapt farm works easily. Children's brains
are developing rapidly; they can bounce back faster than adults; they can learn skills and
cope at a faster rate. In this case, the fact that children don't know much about the world
works in their favor (Booth, J. 2020). In the case of Gigi, the moment she had opened
her eyes to the world, farm life had already been present in her view since her family are

farmers. She also said that she became a young urban farmer not only to help her family

employment and earnings outcomes." (Youth Power Organization, 2022). It is much easy
to learn and adapt skills while young because it exposes young urban farmers to farming
environment.
This theme illustrates how relative the age of the participants to the number of
responsibilities they would be carrying as an adult when they grew up. As anyone would
say, as an individual get older, it is not only their age and physical appearance change,
but also their knowledge, experience, set of skills, and their view of the world. The same
could be said in the context of the participants wherein as they grow in age, their innate
knowledge in farming kept on growing since they are accustomed to farm life and had
adapted to it.
With regards to the major theme, it had been found out that getting older brings
more farm work as the participants get older, they have more responsibilities. In the

statement of Kenneth, he said that his father once told him that as he grew older,

the experience of Lhyka wherein she said that at a young age she is already holding farm

on the farmer. Farming teaches children the importance of their role in the production of
the food that feeds them, their families, and their friends (Farm, L. D. 2019).
This major theme encapsulates the drive and reason of farmers in their tiring,
mentally draining, and physically straining job; to provide a brighter and prosperous future
for them and their families. Family, ambitions, goals, aspirations, and an optimistic view
for the future is seen to be a recurring pattern among the participants when interviewed
about their purpose for working hard day-in and day-out. Consequently, this will be
elaborated as they expressed their ideas and their thoughts in fulfilling their
It is needless to say that family had served as an inspiration for many people, the
same goes to the participants wherein they considered their family as the greatest
aspirations for the young urban farmers. Filipinos are known to be family oriented;
they are known to have strong bonds and ties with their family members. They often place
high regards and of extreme importance on their family above anything else in the world.
Jeremy stated that her family is her main reason in working hard, making herself the
second priority since she views them as her number one supporter. Mario, where he

It stated that one of the major motivations for students to earn their degree is to
have a sense of fulfillment (Gregory, 2018), due to the fact that one’s an individual is
capable of providing the necessary means to their family such as commodities and bills,
the fulfillment will be translated into having a personal satisfaction and thus, creating and
This major theme focuses on the interpersonal relationship built by the participants
with other people around them such as co-farmers, elderly farmers, and even other people
in farming. It is noticeable that building a relationship with other people is not as easy as
one would think due to contributing factors such as differences in opinions on certain
ideas, the age gap between the parties involved, or the willingness to build a rapport from
oneself.
Among the challenges that young urban faced in building relationship with another
people, it is creating fellowship among older farmers which became one of the
emerging themes. It is often hard to maintain a conversation with someone who is older
due to the differences in age, ideas, or mannerism which could be mistranslated and
caused miscommunication. Lhyka stated that she had a hard time building rapport with
fellow farmers in especially if they are older than her because she said that most of the
older farmers tend to order her around without regards for her being new in that field of
work which she considered as the most challenging part of farm life. Raul on the other

hand stated that aside from the older farmers, he also had troubles building rapport with
his customers. And lastly, Gigi further elaborated that the reason she is having a difficult
time understanding older adults is due to their differences in perceiving life in general, and
sometimes she was even talked out of attending school and just focused on working in

get along with the buyers in order to them to talk about the crop matters easily. Raul stated
that establishing relationship with outside people involved in the farm is challenging, but
companionship is necessary to prevent the loss of what was discussed between the sales.
Lund (2021) mentioned that industries can provide a more customized and alluring
customer experience by developing relationships with both new and potential customers.
According to a recent study, 86% of customers say their experiences matter just as much
as the goods or services they actually buy. This implies that businesses must not only
offer the goods or services that consumers require, but also provide excellent end-to-end
This major theme is made up of the lived experiences of the young urban farmers
who are exposed to an environment where working is regarded as being necessary for
survival whether it be in sweltering heat or when it is pouring with rain, and where their
daily income is based on the crops that they can produce, the farm. In fact, the participants
realized that being born and raised on a farm was out of their control, so they made the
the acceptance on their way of life as young urban farmers. Living a life that an
individual had no choice is beyond one’s control, however, accepting and embracing that
life is a choice that one must own up to. This encompasses how the young urban farmers
had accepted their fate to be living in two worlds: as students and farmers. Angel stated
that they just accepted things as the way it is, they took on their purposed as young urban
farmers while being students at the same time. However, Raul stated that the reason they
became young urban farmer is that he had no choice but to. He believed that they have
no alternative choices or paths to follow aside from farming which is why they just
accepted it as it was.
Angel: “Ginagawa ko na lang ang role ko bilang isang farmer at isang estudyante.
Ganoong adjustment na lang kasi ayun yung pinaka best na magagawa ko saka
Raul: “No choice naman ako. Saka ito ang kinabubuhay namin sa pang araw-araw
Many individuals, especially the privileged ones with the right resources and good
education at hand, they are the lucky few to have the choice to follow the career that they
wanted to pursue however, other people are not fortunate enough to have choices and
the only determining factor that an individual can follow is determined at the circumstance
of their birth and status (Kramer, 2014). This context is further supported by Chang
(2020), who claimed that many things are beyond one's control, such as the weather,
family members, death, and life in general, and that attempting to assert control over
these things will only result in more pain and suffering. As a result, many people tend to
embrace and accept things as they are rather than pushing them away even further.
Moreover, an emerging theme that arises deals with the young urban farmers’
early childhood exposure at the farm. Not everyone had the experience of growing up
on a farm, but having looked, it is not all that different from growing up in the city; in fact,
differences in the upbringing because most farm children had to undertake farm works at
a young age. Lhyka stated that she did not have a hard time adjusting in farm life because
she had grown accustomed to it, which contradicts the experience of Paul saying he had
a hard time knowing the basics of farming at an early age but managed to grasp it as he
According to Torii (2018), young people being exposed to the working world
provide opportunities for students to be acquainted with professional people outside their
social circle and help them to be enriched with knowledge that they can use in the labor
industry. However, this claim is refuted by Greenberg (1988) that young people and
are required to take on adult responsibilities when their coping skills are not yet adequate.
He further added that simultaneously balancing work and school may not be easy and
could be perceived by young adults as stressful that they may carry as they progress in
school. The above participants' early experiences conflict with one another, but they
eventually come to an understanding because they had grown accustomed to their life on
the farm.
This theme explores the phenomenon of how farming is not just a one-man
business but a family one. A farmland is usually passed from one generation to another
Pamantasan ng Cabuyao

COLLEGE OF HEALTH AND ALLIED SCIENCES 32
in order to be a source of income and job for generations to come. Same could be said in
the current study wherein the participants described that their farm is not just a business
they earned through hard work, but because of their rights to inherit it.
One emerging theme under this major theme is that farming was passed down
of some families passing down their work and responsibilities, including farming. Families
and relatives are important in the decision to take over the farm and become a farmer for
young urban farmers. Fe claimed that farming was first pursued by her grandparents,
then after her parents took over farm work, which was then passed down to them.
Fe: “Hmm…Kasi po yung nagsimula sila lolo at lola sa pagsasaka, tapos ganun
din po sila mama at papa. Kaya po ayun nagging magsasaka rin po ako kumbaga… ah
Agriculture was once thought of as a heritage vocation, something that was passed
down from generation to generation along with the inheritance of land and property.
Farming is an obligation for the unlanded to take on large responsibilities and hard labor
with minimal benefits and low returns (Lugtu, K.C. 2022). Passing on responsibility in
these kinds of jobs is similar to other types of jobs because everyone needs a source of
On the other hand, parental influence has a greater impact if family and relatives

Young people may not have the same level of a negative influence on their ability

Another aspect included in this theme is being unconcerned about how other
people perceive the young urban farmer. The participant really doesn’t care much
about how others will see her because if she focuses on that, nothing happens. Michelle

According to Kaley (2020), people with low self-esteem may base their perception
of their value on the words and deeds of those around them. It can be challenging to shut
off the noise of other people's voices in our heads and concentrate on the sound of our

begin to acknowledge that our voice guides the course that our thoughts and deeds take.

they can understand each other, especially when learning something about farming.
MAJOR THEME 22: MENTAL AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF BOTH ACADEMIC AND
FARM LIFE
The physical and mental demands of being a young urban farmer constitute this
major theme. It is emphasized that young urban farmers should be mentally ready for
energies. On the other hand, physical toughness is necessary for farming because it

demands. Participant Mario affirms that mental strength is essential for success in school
understand fully, endure, and work with strong negative emotions. Young urban farmers
have a lot of duties to fulfill. Given that being a college student is stressful, for them,
cornerstone of all farm work as the body becomes the key to effectively carrying out
farm activities. Physical strength, in Participant Mario’s view, is essential for farming since
it makes it easier to farm effectively and operate machinery. Hence, Participant Kenneth
stated that the extreme tiredness he encounters on the farm has an impact on him. He
sometimes finds himself unable to control his actions because he is so exhausted, which

amount of stress. Farming is a physically demanding way of life. Building physical, mental,
and emotional strength during childhood and adolescence lays the groundwork for health
and wellbeing (Gwin & Leidy, 2020). In connection with this, young urban farmers have
learned from their experiences in the field that they must be physically strong to carry out
their responsibilities.

The final major theme focuses on the development of one's self as it pertains to

Mental Health Foundation (2022) discussed that there is evidence that helping
people can improve our own physical and mental well-being. Studies have shown a
correlation between acts of kindness and improved wellbeing. Additionally, helping others
can strengthen our social networks and motivate us to be more active. This can raise our
self-esteem as a result. There is some evidence to support the idea that helping others
may encourage brain changes associated with happiness. Being helpful, especially to
their families, makes the children of farmers feel great as they know they are doing

Harvard Health Publishing (2022) argued that gratitude is consistently and strongly
linked to happier lives in positive psychology studies. Gratitude improves one's ability to
experience more joyful feelings, enjoy pleasant memories, maintain good health,
overcome challenges, and forge close personal bonds. The struggles faced by young
urban farmers are not to be criticized at, and as a result, they have learned to be grateful
Under this major theme, it is also emphasized that farming encourages wise
to be wise as the tasks are not that easy and the activities need to be done properly.

According to Brower (2021), by balancing the needs and boundaries with those of

Positive thinkers have been the subject of extensive research. It seems that having
a positive outlook on life makes us happier, more successful, and healthier. People who
have a positive outlook are more tolerant of stress. It makes us stronger to keep trying
and not give up and enables us to maintain our objectives and aspirations so that we can
act on the inspiration to continue working toward them (Gavin, 2022). Although farming
is frequently viewed as a menial job, for young urban farmers, it offers a chance to
CHAPTER V
This chapter initially discusses the method of analysis applied to the qualitative
material and then, it focuses on the summary of findings of the study, conclusion and
recommendations.
In this study, phenomenological research design was utilized with the open-ended
interview questions for one-on-one interview and the analysis of the gathered qualitative
data. There were 23 major themes that arises, each with its own emerging themes.
The study focused on discovering and understanding young urban farmers’ farm
work experiences using phenomenological research design. The following are the
summary of findings based on the data gathered under the research question: “What are
the lived experiences of selected Filipino farmers’ college level children in farm work?”
CQ1: How do the young urban farmer deal with their daily school life?
The first corollary question focused on how the young urban farmers handle their
daily school lives. On a daily basis, they deal with various problems that they face as a
young urban farmer, such as difficulty in time management, where they cannot balance
their time for school work and farm work. Financial crisis was also played a big part for
their problems because whenever they do not have any harvest to sell, they also don't

have money to buy or pay for the things they need at school. It is also evident how they
feel exhausted because they work hard as student and farmer at the same time. They
need a lot of physical effort at the farm works that is why whenever they are going to
attend their class or do school works, they feel very tired and cannot concentrate more
on their studies. As students, they also meet their own academic challenges. This
includes being concerned to having low grades because working on the farm may
interfere with their studies. As a result, few of them prioritize schoolwork over farm work.
Despite their issues and challenges as a student, they are more committed to finding
solutions to their problem and to think more positively in life in order for them to succeed.
Through these, they can provide and sustain the needs for themselves as well as for their
CQ2: What are the challenges that the selected Filipino farmers’ college level
The second corollary question address challenges of Filipino farmers’ college level
children face in their farm life. Participants discussed how they face challenges in farm
life. Those challenges seem to affect them and made them struggle but it did not make
them quit farming and school. It made them accept their way of life and that it is their role
as their parents' children. Most of participants stated that they face challenges in creating
rapport, especially with the older farmers since it is hard to create rapport with the elderly
but that challenge made them to learn to respect more. Several challenges also face by

participants such as farming serving a big part of their finances, a multitude of task, and
increasing responsibilities while growing up. Those challenges are hindrances but
participants still continue their responsibilities in farm in order to help them to fulfill their
academic dreams.
In addition, participants inherited farming from their parents and they also learned
farming in such a young age that is why accepting being a farmer is not hard for them
since it is their way of life ever since they were a child. Challenges that the participants
are facing are though but they are tougher. It won’t make them quit, it made them accept
more their life in order to fulfill their dreams as a young urban farmer college student.
CQ3: How do the young urban farmers perceive themselves in relation to their lived
experiences?
People who have a rich variety of life experiences consequently tend to have a
an individual's motivation and social environment have an impact on how well-aware they
feel about themselves. The investigation of the individuals' distinctive sets of life
understanding of our behavior, abilities, and distinguishing traits is referred to as our self-
concept. It changes when a person goes through different periods of life and has different
lived experiences. Life experiences affect how distinctively different from others a person
believes oneself to be. The participants remarked repeatedly that they didn't seem to see

any particular differences in how they carried out their duties and obligations as a young
urban farmer and a student. It might be argued that people compare their own
characteristics and skills to those of others in an effort to elevate their own self-worth and
perception. The development of unique personalities and attributes is the main idea
behind the other theme. A person's lived experiences are their distinct viewpoint on the
world that they gain from actively taking part in daily life.
The lived experiences that come with being a farmer and a student aid in the
development and maturation of persons who embark on these kinds of jobs. The
participants regularly exhibit personality growth and change as they openly discuss their
real-life experiences as students and farmers. Self-management abilities are the capacity
to control one's thoughts, feelings, and behavior. If you are skilled at self-management,
you can set goals on your own and make the effort to achieve them. The ability of the
strategies to deal with the challenges they face balancing their duties as students and
farmers has shown some promise. They also learn how to respond to and avoid outside
criticism of their fledgling urban farming endeavors. Furthermore, some of the inspirations
that the participants shared with society are by showing admirable deeds that they
learned about through involvement in both farming and intellectual endeavors. Even when
done in quiet, sharing an experience with another person can help us concentrate and
heighten our awareness of our senses and perceptions. Additionally, it enhances our

general perception of ourselves and our ability to go through challenges posed by our
CQ4: What disparities exist between the described lived experiences of selected
The differences in the lived experiences of young urban farmers are also explored.
It is generally acknowledged that a role is a set of guidelines for how one ought to behave
in various situation. It is evident that their role plays a significant quality because they
openly stated that they were the only young urban farmers among the other students.
Participants feel that the reason they stand out as the only young urban farmers among
their peers is because they do not view their job on the farm as being typical of other
students who are employed. Participants' personal views on their diverse experiences
working on farms while in school are apparent in that having the necessary skills, training,
experience, and knowledge gives them the ability to use them to perform their
responsibilities on the farm and better equips them to deal with the difficulties of being a
young urban farmer. Furthermore, it is evident that participants believe farming to be their
reality and the source of their daily necessities. As a result, it is claimed that school is an
escape from reality and farming, and that whenever they are at school, they are free from
all of their worries and problems. The difficulty of juggling the demands of being a farmer
and a student while still participating in academic activities at school and carrying out their
also makes it more challenging for them to attend school, but some of them are able to
find other ways to do so. Indeed, being a young urban farmer is a tough job, but it is
evident that the participants handled the challenges by having to come up with recovery
solutions. Self-motivation is crucial because it is the basis for overcoming the challenges.
This also entails being willing to borrow money to help with educational expenses and
to maximize farm productivity. It is also shown that situational awareness and effective
communication foster the development of cognitive skills. The participants are aware of
their surroundings, where they are and should be, as well as whether or not anything or
someone nearby causes a challenge. Effective communication, which allows little space
for misinterpretation or message modification, reduces the chance of conflict with other
farmers in the community. It is also apparent that being a young urban farmer has both
physical and mental demands. It is highlighted that in order to manage their thoughts,
emotions, and energies, young urban farmers should be mentally prepared for stressful
experiences, which enables them to build a higher sense of self-concept and positive

desirable it is for participants to manage themselves and reach their maximum potential,
it promotes motivational function. Despite the problems that young urban farmers endure,
they employ this as a benchmark for how to be more persistent in everything, not just for
themselves but also for their futures. Even though their experiences differ, it still cannot
measure the sacrifices committed by each of them. In spite of their various experience
faced as young urban farmers, there are connections as well as differences—a sense of
self-concept.
Conclusion
Young urban farmers must confront and uphold a unique set of rights, obligations,
expectations, conventions, and behaviors as part of their vocation. Role theory, which
holds that people play a variety of roles throughout their lives and that these roles come
with principles on how individuals should behave, lends support to this. Young urban
farmers are exposed to farming at a young age and witnessed it in their parents and fellow
farmers, so as they grow, it becomes more ingrained in their minds that this is the work
that supports their family and that they need to persevere and contribute in order to
acquire something. This has become a part of their lives, and they have accepted the
responsibilities associated with it. As they learn about the hardships of farming, a desire
to become young urban farmers emerges from their mind and heart, and they develop a
The self-concept of young urban farmers evolves as they grow older and go through
various stages of life. The Self-Concept theory, which explains how people perceive their
distinctive behaviors, skills, and unique qualities as a result of their experiences in life,
adds support to this. Young urban farmers support their families by continuing the work
and responsibilities they started to fulfill as young people, which they are not ashamed
of. They feel proud of themselves as a result of having made a contribution to their family
and community. They also believe that they are skilled and knowledgeable farmers, which
empowers them to be proud of being young urban farmers. Regardless of the challenges
they encountered were often tough and demanding, they still had the ability to overcome
them and find solutions so that they could continue achieving their goals for their family—
The role of a young urban farmer is distinctive in the way that they continue to acquire
knowledge about the farming industry. It is a reality of life for them, and having to perform
this role provides them with the opportunity to develop their physical health as well as
their mental health. Through their experience, it encouraged them to face challenges with
courage and a positive outlook. As a result, despite how demanding and stressful their

Recommendations
The researcher made the following recommendations in light of the study's findings
and conclusions:
To the Young Urban Farmers. It is essential to take care of themselves at all times,
especially with daily work in the field and academic study. Self-care involves making the
time to do things that enhance their quality of life and both physical and mental well-being.
It can improve their energy levels, reduce their risk of illness, and help them manage
To the Parents. They are advised to be mindful about the welfare of their children. Their
farm work experiences may have an impact on them personally as well as on how they
develop a sense of self. Through effective communication, they will be able to formulate
a strategy to continuously support their children in every way. This will also give their
children confidence to carry out farm duties and put in the effort needed to achieve their
personal aspirations.
To the Students. Learners in similar situations can relate and consider this study.
The findings will help working students or those with multiple responsibilities by giving
them more insight into how to balance their work and how to maintain a healthy self-

INTRODUCTION
People have all had various experiences that have had a significant contribution
on who they are- and the meaning that ascribe to those experiences influences the way
of how individuals perceive themselves. Self-concept is a vision of oneself that people
have based on their personal experiences, self-image, thinking, and how they describe
oneself in various situations. Many young people living in developing nations where
agriculture serves to be the primary source of income are engaged to farming. The
situation of students who study while working is one of the aspects that influences their
well-being.
The study seeks to explore the farm work experiences of selected college students. The
study also aims to understand how the selected college students deal with their farm work
experiences while studying, to discover how do those experiences contribute to forming
their self-concept, and to know the existing disparities between their described lived
experiences.
