CHAPTER ONE

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This chapter presents the Introduction, Statement of the Problem, Conceptual Framework,
Hypothesis, Significance of the Study, Definition of Terms and the Scope and Delimitation.

Introduction

Time is a valuable resource that keeps slipping away without an ending. Effectively
managing this resource, which everyone has access to equally, and placing enough focus on
planning are the keys on achieving success in life. Students are forced to use time wisely and are
constrained in their pursuit for time control due to the high performance standards needed by
competitive settings. The competitive world of today drives people to efficiently organize and
manage their time beginning with their primary education.

The technique of scheduling your free time and limiting the amount of time you devote to
particular tasks in order to perform more effectively is known as time management. Some people
manage their time more well than others, but everyone can acquire habits that will help them
manage their time more effectively. Your career and wellbeing may suffer if you don’t have
good time management. You’ll have a better understanding of what you need to do and how long
each activity should take when you learn to schedule time out of your day for all of your critical
duties. When you have a schedule to stick to, you'll probably discover that you spend less time
debating what to work on or putting off crucial tasks and more time starting them. You may
focus on only the most important activities at hand and avoid time-wasting distractions by using
time management (Freshbooks, 2019).

Although efficient time management is linked to improved academic achievement and

lower levels of anxiety in students, many of them struggle to strike a balance between their daily
life and their studies (Adams et al., 2019). In a student’s busy schedule, time management can be
quite helpful. In order to manage their everyday lives and turn in their academic assignments on
time, it makes sure that students are well-prepared, organized, and focused. Although it can
increase achievement, this is a talent that students must acquire and hone.

The study of Ahmad together with his co-researchers reveals that if students can
effectively manage their time, they can fulfill goals and do better academically; yet, if they can’t,
their level of accomplishments will also fall. Students’ most powerful tool is time. Every student
can compete in the academic field easily and effectively by handling it well. Grade Power
Learning shares 10 ways to improve the skills of the students when handling their time. It
includes creating master schedule, using an agenda, eliminating distractions, setting goals for
each study session, working on assignments early, making a project plan, stop multi-tasking,
taking a break from studying, start tasks earlier and lastly, getting enough rest to recharge your
mind (Ahmad et al., 2019).

It's crucial to know how to manage your time well because doing so has numerous
positive effects on both your daily schedule at school and your life as a whole. Understanding the
value of time management inspires you to get moving and work for your objectives. You
accomplish your goals more quickly as a consequence of your diligent work and fresh found
motivation. When you manage your time well, you accomplish more while also having more
time for pursuits you genuinely enjoy. It will be more effective to allocate a set amount of time,
like an hour, to a task and keep to your schedule than to complete a task without a time limit.

Making a to-do list, allotting time for each item, and then putting the chores on your calendar are
all steps in effective time management. You won’t be uncertain about what to do next or whether
you have to complete everything you need to by doing this. You’ll discover that you now have
more free time because effective time management enables you to complete your task more
quickly. You’ll feel more energized and less stressed if you have more free time since you’ll
have more time to spend with your loved ones, engage in a hobby, or even take a trip overseas
(Clockify, 2022).

To increase their academic performance success, it is advised that students monitor and
practice prioritizing their chores and obligations. Teachers could also incorporate time
management software and principles into their lessons. The students are also urged to attend
trainings and seminars on time management (Dalluay et al., 2019). To reach your own goals and
assure improved performance, students have many obligations, including attending to classes on
time and completing tasks.

Therefore, this study is a Quantitative Type of Research that focuses on measuring the
Effects Of Time Management to the Academic Performance of Senior High School Learners of
Trinity Polytechnic College Inc. for School Year 2022-2023. In light of these facts, the primary
goal of this work is to determine the different factors of time management that affects the
students academic performance, as well as to contrast students approaches to time management.

Statement of the Problem

Some students in Trinity Polytechnic College Inc. has been having a hard time on starting
a new normal way of learning. Poor Time Management is one of the main problems affecting

students. The causes of it are lack of schedules, distractions, multi-tasking and so on.
Additionally, several students typically blame the delays on the numerous commitments and
obligations they have outside of class. If we are not going to pay attention to this kind of
situation, it is possible that students may not be able to learn the knowledge that should be
learned.

Specifically, this research wants to seek answers through these following questions:

1. How do you manage your activity deadlines?

2. How much time do you take per day to finish all your classes and activities?
3. What is the relation between time management and academic performance of student?
4. How many hours do your teachers give you to complete the activity?
5. How often do you fail to complete a task due to a short deadline?
6. What is your General Weighted Average (GWA)?

Theoretical Framework

This study heavily relies on the theory of Pickle Jar that was developed in 2002 by
Jeremy Wright. It is centered on giving a person’s daily tasks a priority while keeping in mind
the allotted amount of time for each. It is also known as the bucket of rocks theory or the jar of
life theory and is based on the idea that time is a limited, finite space. In essence, the pickle jar
serves as an analogy, with the jar stands for a normal day while the sand, pebbles, and rocks
stands for daily activities. Additionally, (Wright, 2002) extend the comparison by substituting
water for private life. The jar can be filled with a variety of jobs and pursuits. However, everyone
must stick to a set of schedule and order for each task.

Because it’s necessary for students to manage time and complete all chores linked to their
studies, its straightforward recommendations assist every student in differentiating between

critical and unimportant tasks, increasing productivity. The efficient use of time affects students’
progress at every level, not just in traditional learning but also in the new learning because of
Covid 19. Students successfully complete all tasks in distance learning on schedule when they
can handle their time well. Also, the pickle jar theory aids everyone in calculating the time
needed to complete a task (whether it be with rocks, pebbles, or sand). Moreover, the study’s
conceptual framework is shown in the diagram below.

The diagram shows the Independent (Left) and Dependent (Right) Variable. The
objective of the study was to examine the Time Management and the Academic Performance of
Senior High School Students. The study was necessary since high academic expectations among
senior high school students can expose them to stressful conditions. In return, stress in managing
their time can affect their level of performance. A quantitative approach was used to meet the
objective of the study. A survey questionnaire was electronically administered to the participants
to collect socio-demographic data, the student’s GWA and time management indicators.
