ABSTRACT

As technology continuously evolves to a much advanced innovation, the occurring

effects it has on every individual become a factor that is affecting life’s productivity. This

study tackles the relationship of technology and the physical activity level of the respondents.

It provides factual knowledge that is essential for the discoveries of the aspects that

technology and physical activity level is being connected to each other. Furthermore, the goal

of this study is to identify how technology became evident as a medium for improving the

productivity of individuals alongside with how these physical activity levels were affected by

the rapid growth of technology. The main objectives of this paper is to know how technology

motivates the students in being physically active, if this promotes physical inactivity, the

effectiveness of modern technology in becoming physically fit, and the importance of

knowing the physical activity level of the students. Moreover, to fulfill the research

processes, this study uses a quantitative method as this will show a numerical and exact

responses in addressing the concerns of this study. The researchers provide 10 survey

questionnaires to be completed by 50 respondents from senior high school students in Lipa

Montessori School of Learning Inc. Based on the findings, the innovation of technology

helps in attaining a physically fit and healthy state of the body. However, this study also

concludes that the massive growth of technology has affected the productivity of the students

leading to promoting physical inactivity. Thus, this allows the students to identify their

weaknesses in doing various physical activities. The researchers suggest that the use of

various applications and gadgets can also be a way to achieve their body goals as these

technologies offer features that can be used by the users.

CHAPTER 1

1.1 Background of the Study

Technology has developed rapidly, influencing a lot of people's way of living. As it

evolves into different products that serve people with different purposes. Students are

attracted to the newest forms of technology which become part of their life. Due to this, an

individual tends to have a different physical activity level compared to other people as it is

possible to believe that every individual has different ways to spend their time each day.

Overusing technology products negatively affects the overall health of a person and one of

these is about physical health. Physical health can be associated with the rate of physical

activity level of a person. Technology’s relationship to the physical activity level of a person

vice versa may have negatively or positively influence each other. There are few health

conditions that are realistically encountered by an individual as one of the results of being

highly addicted to technology (Alotaibi et al., 2020). Obesity is just one of the negative

effects that occurs to an individual by frequently engaging himself to the use of smartphones

and tablets (Engberg et al., 2019). However, technology can also have a positive effect on

individuals' physical activity level. According to Kaspersky, through the use of digital

devices, an individual can track their fitness activities and observe how their diets work

throughout the activities they proceeded to do.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

This research aims to recognize The Correlation of Technology and Physical Activity

Level of Senior High School Students of Lipa Montessori School of Learning Inc. This

study’s target respondents were senior high school students of LMSOL, who were intended

to complete a 50-person survey produced by the researchers.

7
The following were the questions that the researchers aimed to answer:

1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents?

1.1 Gender

1.2 Grade Level

1.3 Strand

2. Does technology motivate students in being physically active?

3. Does modern technology affect the consistency of physical activity of the

students?

4. Does technology promote physical inactivity?

5. Is modern technology required to help the students become physically fit?

6. What makes it important to know students’ physical activity level?

1.3 Significance of the Study

At the end of this research, the people involved in the study will gain knowledge and

information about the findings and conclusion. It will be beneficial to the individuals once

the research is finished. The study will affect the people below,

To the Students. The students will explore how technology use and physical activity levels

relate to this research. It will help them to understand the importance of knowing their

capabilities when it comes to this matter. It also clarifies the statements and matters that will

be discussed in this study. The interest in technology and physical levels will be discussed to

have a better understanding.

To the Parents. This study will help the student's parents to be enlightened about the

correlation between the technology and physical activity levels of their children. The usage

of technology can cause many problems, however, with the guidance of the parents it will

8
lessen the screen time. Although technology can be viewed as negative, this study will

conclude whether technology or physical activity levels could be related to each other

without taking both sides as negative or positive.

To the Researchers. The conducted study will further open doors for future researchers to

expand and engage. For further studies when it comes to the correlation between physical

activity levels and technology. This study will give a reliable source and outcome that can

support future studies. It could be the result of knowing the relationship between physical

activity levels and technology. It can be claimed as both negative and positive based on the

outcome of the study.

1.4 Scopes and Delimitations

This study will exclusively concentrate on determining the relationship between

technology and the physical activity level of senior high school students of LMSOL. This

research is limited to randomly selected Lipa Montessori senior high school students from all

strands.

This research aims to know if there is a relation between the use of technology and the

physical activity level of the target respondents. The study will explore the potential benefits

and drawbacks of using modern technology in relation to the physical activity level of the

students. The research will use quantitative methods, such as survey questionnaires to gather

data from the students. Each respondent is given the same questionnaire to complete.

This research has several limitations that should be acknowledged. Firstly, the results of

this study will be applicable only to the respondents of this study, as it is only conducted in

one school, LMSOL, which may limit the generalizability of the findings to other schools or

9
communities. Secondly, the study will only focus on the physical activity level of senior high

school students, which may not be representative of the broader population. Finally, the study

may be limited by potential biases as the questionnaire will contain open-ended questions.

10
CHAPTER II

This chapter presents literature related to the idea behind present study. In order to

provide the necessary context and support for the accomplishment of this research, it also

analyzes some studies and materials from the Internet. This chapter also presents the

conceptual framework and the definition of terminologies.

2.1 Review of Related Literature

Nowadays, technology has become incredibly useful to us. It facilitates task

completion, eliminates boredom in a variety of ways, and in some ways encourages people to

lead sedentary lifestyles. Technology can apparently have a negative effect in many ways, but

it also has the potential to encourage physical activity. It has produced discoveries that have

changed the course of human history and improved healthcare, going far beyond the

everyday items we use on a daily basis. It has helped people stay physically active indoors

and has turned into a useful tool for promoting the significance of physical and mental health

programs (Morelle, 2021). The key to remaining physically inactive is to use technology

wisely, especially in light of external factors like the pandemic and environmental ones like

seasonal changes.

Technology has two sides to it. Computers, for instance, encourage inactive leisure

activities (like playing computer games when seated). However, technology has also been

used to encourage exercise and alter people's exercise habits. Heart rate monitors,

accelerometers, and pedometers have all been utilized as motivational tools for a long time.

Newer technologies also promote physical activity with the use of interactive video games

and others. According to experts, physicians should employ Internet-based physical activity

11
interventions to encourage and modify their patients' exercise behaviors (Marcus, Ciccolo,

and Sciamanna 2010). Pedometers track and count the amount of steps you walk each day.

Most pedometers require a firm waistband to provide accurate step counts; however, some

pedometers can be carried in a shirt pocket, pants pocket, or bag held close to the body.

Others can be worn around the ankle or inside a shoe. Accelerometers capture

minute-by-minute data on bodily acceleration, giving precise details on the frequency, length,

intensity, and patterns of movement. Accelerometer technology is now making its way into

more recent classes of smartphones and waist-mounted pedometers. The hip's vertical

acceleration affects the piezoelectric mechanism (Tudor-Locke, Bassett et al. 2011).

In the study, “Associations between Screen Time and Physical Activity among Spanish

Adolescents” states that mostly boys are more technology inclined or have the most record

for screen time that affects their MVPA or Moderate to Vigorous Physical Activity to

decrease. This has caused that the physical activity was replaced by the increased use of

screen time of the adolescents. Furthermore this study also suggested implementing policies

that will engage many to physical activity such as sports and competitions (Sanchez et al.

2011). Moreover, the studies from the “Television Viewing Time and Mortality: The

Australian Diabetes, Obesity and Lifestyle Study” concludes that prolonged sitting time can

cause cardiovascular disease or CVD. So it is advisable to promote exercise that will lessen

the cases of other diseases such as chronic disease (Dunstan et al. 2010).

According to “World Health Organization” (2018), it has been demonstrated that

regular exercise can aid in the prevention and management of non-communicable diseases

(NCDs), including heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and a number of malignancies.

Additionally, it lowers blood pressure, supports a healthy body weight, and enhances mental

health, well-being, and quality of life. All movement is referred to as physical activity.

12
Walking, cycling, wheeling, sports, active recreation, and play are all common methods to be

active that anyone may do for fun and at any ability level. However, according to the most

recent statistics, 81% of adolescents and 1 in 4 adults worldwide do not engage in enough

physical activity. Furthermore, due to shifting transportation patterns, increased use of

technology for work and leisure, cultural norms, and rising sedentary behaviors, levels of

inactivity rise and can reach as high as 70% as nations progress economically. Increased

levels of physical inactivity have detrimental effects on the environment, economy, quality of

life, and communal well-being.

Based on the “Medical News Bulletin” (2017), technology use among young adults

may have an impact on their health-related behaviors, particularly their physical activity

levels. If college students frequently use their smartphones or other electronics in place of

engaging in physical activity, it may affect their cardiorespiratory fitness. However, research

on male and female students has shown contradictory findings. In earlier studies, using

sedentary technology (desktop computers, for example) was linked to less activity in men but

not in women. Activity may also be impacted by sleep. In order to maintain normal function,

for instance, sleep is essential, yet college or university students frequently struggle with

sleep deprivation. Short-term sleep deprivation in this situation may be linked to lower levels

of physical activity. Sex, color, and ethnicity can also have an impact on one's level of

physical activity.

Based on “PMC PubMed Central” (2020) Children are increasingly attracted to the

newest forms of technology. With the recent rise in popularity of smartphones and tablets, the

use of such technological devices has become unavoidable and is now viewed as an integral

part of life. Because technology use interrupts the daily activities of children, it can result in

13
decreased physical activity. The children are often seen procrastinating instead of doing the

assigned physical activity that they have planned within the day.

According to “Sec. Public Health Education and Promotion”, since the beginning of

time people explored and developed new technologies to make their activities of daily living

less labour intensive, more efficient and consequently, more sedentary. In addition,

technological advances in medicine throughout history have led to substantial increase in life

expectancy. While advances in technology have provided many benefits to society, new

technology has also led to a substantial reduction in the amount of incidental physical

activity. previously conducted as part of a “standard” working day (active transport, labour,

etc.) or as part of domestic duties around the home (cleaning and cooking,) have been

reduced or replaced by machines.

2.2 Conceptual Framework

14
Figure 1

The input-process-output (IPO) paradigm was applied by the researchers. The concept

focuses the study on the demographic profile and insight and the insight of the respondents

on the relevance of technology and physical activity in terms of level, which also serves as

the input. Then, the process which involves the method of how the researchers gather data.

Lastly, the output which is the proposal for the research project results.

2.3 Definition of Terminologies

The researchers provide a more in-depth definition and description of unfamiliar

terminologies that will be used throughout the paper of the study, in order to understand it

further.

Physical Health. This term refers to the normal condition of the body. It can also be defined

as the proper function of the components of physical fitness.

Technology products. This includes all the material devices that are improved and

developed to perform different functions.

15
CHAPTER III

Methodology

This chapter discusses the research design and methods, including the study's

population and sample, research instruments, and data-gathering procedures.

3.1 Research Method and Procedure

A quantitative technique was used in this study to investigate and comprehend the

participants' objectives. To acquire comprehensive data about the study's issue, the

researchers performed survey questions with the participants. The quantitative study

approach allowed the researchers to gather data to build knowledge and comprehend the

relationship between the level of physical activity and technology. Closed-ended questions

were employed during the data collection procedure to encourage the participants to share

their knowledge. To find patterns and themes in the data, the researchers carefully examined

the responses. Overall, the study's findings emphasize the value of applying methods of

quantitative study while examining complex situations and objects. An organized survey that

is given to the group of participants who are the representatives of the study is generally used

in quantitative research to examine the relationship between levels of physical activity and

technology. This study intends to ask people about their use of technology, including

smartphones, fitness trackers, and leisure for screen time, as well as their physical activity

habits, including how often and how long they exercise. After the data has been gathered,

statistical analysis techniques like correlation coefficients can be used to evaluate the strength

and direction of the relationship between levels of physical activity and technology use. This

can reveal whether technology has a significant positive or negative impact on physical

activity, or if it has no effect at all.

16
The researchers used the snowball sampling method. Snowball sampling is a technique

that recruits individuals and participants are asked by the researchers to assist them in

identifying other potential subjects. The researchers discovered that this method has an easy

way of contacting our subjective participants so that the researchers could collect data by

interviewing the recommended individual among our participants so that no further issues

may occur upon reaching them, for questionnaire purposes so that the researchers may

identify and study the participant's point of view and thoughts about the researchers to collect

data. The researchers find this method applicable since the topic covers the senior high

students in Lipa Montessori. Strictly and carefully we choose some fellow senior high school

students that have great social status. The researchers conducted their analysis using the

snowball sampling method because we are no longer amid a pandemic. Initially, the

researchers asked the permission of the researcher adviser to conduct the survey.

Due to the quantitative nature of the study, the researchers created online survey guide

questions based on the research questions. The major goal was to examine everything there

was to know about participants’ use of technology and how the subjects were physically

inclined. The respondents will be asked for permission through a letter. Selected students of

senior high school will be contacted either face-to-face or via social media platforms such as

Messenger to request permission to schedule for answering an online survey. Following the

respondents’ consent to participate, researchers will then send a link to the survey based on

the respondents’ convenient schedules. The level of participation is entirely up to the

participants. After they agree to participate, the researchers will let them know what the

study’s specific goals are. The questions posed by the researchers will be addressed, and

participants’ engagement will be recognized.

17
3.2 Research Design

This study utilizes a correlational research design to determine the relationship between

the two variables in which a change in one has a positive or negative impact on the other.

“Correlational research” is a quantitative research approach that seeks to examine

correlations between variables without the researcher influencing or controlling any of them

(Pritha Bhandari, 2021). It is a non-experimental type of research in which variables are

numerically measured and investigation of whether the variables correlate. Correlational

research is often used to explore causal correlations between variables, investigate non-causal

interactions, and assess new measuring techniques. Therefore, this research design can help

the researchers determine the relationship between technology and physical activity level of

senior high school students. It enables researchers to confidently generalize findings to

different populations or environments. This makes it possible to comprehend and understand

the complex relationships between numerous various variables on a deeper level.

3.3 Subject of the Study

The focus and participants of this study will be in the division of the senior high school

students in Lipa Montessori School of Learning Inc. There will be a 10 survey questionnaire

to be answered by 50 respondents throughout the investigation. The responses will be used as

a major contribution in the succession of the whole research process. The respondents will be

chosen by using a snowball sampling as a sampling procedure.

3.4 Research Instrument

The researchers used a closed-ended survey for the succession of this study. This type

of survey questionnaire is often conducted to collect quantitative data as the options are

limited. In addition, the data gathered can be analyzed with a quantitative approach and will

contribute to a clear direction to the goal of the study. Closed-ended survey is relevant to the

18
process of statistical analysis and it is much easier as this will not be open for more debates.

Furthermore, the researchers use this type of survey as the study focuses more on figuring out

the average rate of physical activity level of the respondents which contributes to the use of

statistical methods for the attainment of research succession.

CHAPTER V

Findings, Conclusion, and Recommendation

This chapter summarizes the findings, conclusions, and recommendations of the

study.

5.1 Summary

Overall, the study aims to identify the correlation between technology and

physical activity level of the senior high school students in Lipa Montessori School of

Learning Inc.

Specifically, the study seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What are the demographic profiles of the respondents?

a. Gender

b. Grade Level

c. Strand

2. Does technology motivate students to be physically active?

3. Does modern technology affect the consistency of physical activity of the

students?

4. Does technology promote physical inactivity?

5. Is modern technology required to help the students become physically fit?

6. What makes it important to know students’ physical activity level?

5.2 Findings

1. Demographic Profile of the Respondents

1.1 Gender

30
The majority of the respondents are female (30) respondents or sixty

percent (60%), while nineteen (19) respondents, or thirty-eight percent (38%),

the one respondent (1) comprising two percent (2%) selected not to disclose

their gender.

1.2 Grade Level

The majority of the respondents that are aligned with the grade level of

12 are twenty-six (26) respondents or fifty-two percent (52%) and the rest of the

respondents are twenty (24) Grade 11 students comprising forty-eight percent

(48%) of the respondents.

1.3 Strand

The majority of the respondents, twenty-five (25) or fifty percent (50%)

are Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) students,

thirteen (13) respondents or twenty-six percent (26%) are Humanities and

Social Sciences (HUMSS) students, and twelve (12) comprising twenty-four

percent (24%) are Accountancy and Business Management (ABM) students.

2. Does technology motivate students to be physical active

The majority of the students think that using technology helps them to be

more motivated since it helps serve as a guide for inexperienced students. Due

to the vast various types of exercises and physical activity that can be done with

using certain technology, students find it engaging and as well as enjoyable.

3. Does modern technology affect the consistency of the physical activity of

students?

31
The majority of the students think that with the use of modernized

technology, there will be consistency of the physical activity as long the

intensity of the activity will increase as the development with the individual.

This is because results will appear if the students are able to keep up the

intensity in terms of physical activity.

4. Does technology promote physical inactivity?

The majority of the students think technology promotes physical inactivity,

the students think this because of the duration they spent in using modern

technology or to the workload they experience through school work. Majority of

the students also use technology from 5-7 hours a day which consumes most of

them being distracted by a device rather than doing physical training or activity.

5. Is modern technology required to help students become physically fit?

The majority of the students view modernizing technology to help students

become physically fit, this is because there are several ways that technology

could provide help to its students. One is being able to track the progress and

calories of the individual so that they are aware of the things needed to avoid

and do and see how much they have progressed in the physical activity.

6. What makes it important to know students’ physical activity level?

The majority of the students think that knowing the physical activity level

of an individual helps them know the weaknesses that can help for more

improvement when doing physical activity so that progress can be made.

32
5.3 Conclusion

After gathering and interpreting the data from respondents, the researchers come up

with the following conclusions:

1. The technology plays an immense role in motivating the students especially those

that are inexperienced in physical activities to start engaging in different practices.

2. This study concludes that the drastic innovation of technology has directly affected

the productivity of the students with regards to the intensity and frequency of the

respondents' physical activity.

3. As stated, these various technologies have several features that can provide

instructions and information about the physical status of the body.

5. 4 Recommendations

From the findings and conclusions that are presented in the study, the researchers

offered the following recommendations:

1. Many applications and gadgets can help individuals when it comes to being

physically active. However, prioritize the importance and goals of oneself when

it comes to being physically active.

2. Technology nowadays is reliable in many ways, however, considering the

screen time when it comes to using devices. Lessening screen time can also help

physically fit oneself, but technology can have negative aspects especially when

it comes to the duration of screen time. Technology can’t be dependable at all

times, recommended to put limits on using technology and duration.

33
3. Technology succeeds in the satisfaction of each individual when it comes to

purpose and usage. This gives positive results from the responses that the

technology can help them when it comes to tracking their physical level.

However, there will always be a downside to the research results: technology

can sometimes distract the respondents from focusing on their physical activity.

4. This research found some gaps that need to be cleared and solved, especially

how to improve the creativity of individuals when it comes to motivating

themselves to do physical activities. It should be spreading awareness of screen

time and usage of technology. Students nowadays should balance their lives

when it comes to physical activity, school workloads, and screen time.
