Chapter 1

1.1 Introduction

This study is focused on electronic contraption that affects

the student of their Cognitive, Emotional, And behavior aspects. We

study unnecessary complications of devices and what are the effects

on the student. If the device is not working well the students can’t

follow the topic that the teacher discusses. If they fail, their emotions

can be affected too. And their behavior will change in some way.

Electronic devices has become more and more relevant

nowadays, especially it’s the new mode of learning now promotes the

use of these technology. Youth were surrounded by this and

increasingly becoming a part of their lives. That is why we need to

understand how it impacts the students’ emotional and cognitive

aspects as well on their behavior on how they utilize these such of

gadgets. Electronic gadgets said to have a positive impact on student’s

learning capacity. It also helps to improve the efficiency of teaching

methods, positively affects the feedback of the students learning. But

for some studies, it shown that spending frequent time using this

electronic devices can also has a downside. Too much screen time has
6

proven that can cause some cognitive developmental constraints. For

example, impaired emotional and social intelligence, social isolation,

disrupted sleep, etc.

“If we look around, our children spend most of their

valuable time on their mobile phones or tablets. Not only does it

impair their vision but also it negatively affects their physical and

social development", De Lima has stated. While modern technology

has helped this generation to search things in just a click, it also

caused some unwanted outcomes. DoH raised a warning on the

uprising rate of youth who are affected with near-sightedness or

myopia due to excessive and continuous use of electronic devices. And

some professionals stated that constant use of gadgets can cause

focal seizures or other serious mental health illness.

1.2 Background of the Research

There are many factors affecting on how impacts of

electronic contraption will appear on every student. Some students

that are using their devices from time to time has observed mostly

negative impacts to their selves. Based on article, Golden Peak High

7

School (GPHS) said that almost all of negative effects of using

electronic devices is from excessive usage or misuse of electronics

devices. Too much usage of devices such as tablets, laptops,

computers, smartphones, video games, etc. might lead on decrease of

student’s self motivation, ability and their interest in learning.

This study is all about electronic devices. We talk a lot

about the effect of it on the student to their Understanding, emotions

and behaviour. Most especially now that pandemics happen no

interaction between people. How they utilize technology Most

especially in academic performance.

Our content is all about electronic gadgets and how they

affect our health and daily life. As the matter of fact, in today’s

society, we can also see that technology has become an integral part

of our everyday life. Whether if you are a student or an engineering,

we all agree that digital devices play an important role in your

academic achievement. Everyone, from young to elderly, is utilizing

technological devices. It might be TVs, cellphones, computers, tablets,

and other electronic devices. Gadgets offer benefits in that they have

made our lives simpler, but overusing electronic devices may also
8

have severe problems that affecting students and other users. Such as

sleeping problem, vision loss, less time to play outside and loss social

skills, mood swings, etc.

According to Dr. Aldemaro Romero Jr. (2016), he observed

that one of the most unacceptable behavior in their college classroom

is pervasive use of electronic devices by students during class. It is

because students are always bringing electronic devices with them

anywhere even inside the classroom. Wether using their tablets,

laptops, or smart phone, students are getting more and more wired to

their devices. He also stated that since some of electronic devices of

their students are handy, they use it often for checking their social

media, read their email, play video games, do homework for other

classes, and even watch pornography while having class and lecture.

class.

According to Othaman, Muhhamad, and Thandar

(2019).Many school students who own electronic gadgets spent most

of their time on it. As a result, both of the aspect of academic

achievement and health status is affected as they are too dependent

on electronic gadgets.

Based on Dr. Timothy Legg (2020), people are more

engaged than it has ever been, due in large part to fast technological

breakthroughs. Even though these types of technology may have a

good influence on the world, there’s also some evidence of

technology’s harmful outcomes and abuse. Technologies such as a

social media, smartphones and other electronic devices can cause

emotional and behavioral problems, which including vision problems

and difficulties concentrating on crucial activities. They might even

lead to much more severe health issues such as depression.

11

In today’s generation, electronic devices are very chronic

no matter what age you are. Especially for those teenagers and also

students, because electronic devices are more popular to them. And

since students has more potential on having electronic devices, they

are also the one who’s most exposed on using electronic devices.

There are students that are already educated and has enough

knowledge on proper use of electronic devices. But there are also

students that are using electronic devices just for fun, lacking of

complete knowledge about proper use of electronic devices and also

don’t have discipline on time management. And these traits of

students towards electronic contraption might lead to having some

negative impact to their cognitive, emotional and also behavior.

12

The impact of electronic devices on the behavior of the

student is their habit to Cheat. The student uses a site to copy some

ideas and revise the real one to make its own idea. The student is

distracted by social media but some of the students know how to use

the electronic devices for good purpose. The student is inactive doing

School work. The students depend on the site and they use the device

for nonsense stuff before doing the activity and end up doing it on a

deadline. That was the reason why the student passed the task late or

sometimes did nothing . And the student makes it a habit.

The impact of electronic devices on students’ psychological

well-being is that they have experienced significant levels of

depression and anxiety as a result of students’ and teenagers

increased negative social interaction online. Hearing fake issues about

you on social media, reading hate comments, people in schools

judging you based on your physical appearance, and other

accusations that students share on social media using their phones, it

may lead the victim to depression and other major mental health

problems. Students use their electronic devices to propagate

cyberbullying and other negative behavior.

13

Working with this research sure will have a little concern.

Administering survey for data gathering was assumed to need a lot of

time because of constraints in personal interaction, thus limiting the

researcher to hand out the questionnaires to the respondents and

supposed to be answered immediately. Next is, the data precision

would be questionable because some students tend to answer forms

online irresponsibly, not taking it seriously because nobody sees to

supervise them answering the forms. But all in all, we are hoping for a

fortunate success of this study.

Poor time management, Internet connection and

responder. Poor Internet connection can affect the time management

we prepared for. Efficient Time management is really important to

conduct this study we’re too busy with our own agenda. We settle the

plan to conduct a study in the free time of the responder to make sure

we’re not disturbing them. Some of the related literature is hard to

find. There’s a lot of articles but some of them had a fee to get and

some of it was not related to the study.

I myself as one of the researchers in this subject, I find it

both simple and complicated. Simple for the reason that there were a

lot of articles and sources that we can study for our topic, in despite
14

of the fact that some articles we discovered were unrelated to our

topic. We struggle due to a lack of communication, lack of consistency

in time, and we are not fully committed in this research because of

the fact that we have our own things to do.

1.3 Statement of the Problem

This study aimed to identify The Impact in Cognitive,

Emotional, and Behavior of Utilizing Electronic Contraption among

SHS Students. Specifically, it sought to answer the following

questions:

1. How students utilize electronic contraption?

2. Based on how students utilize electronic contraption, what is

it’s impact to them?

3. How long in a day do students spend their time using

electronic devices?
15

1.4 Objectives of the Study

General Objectives

Quantitative research can assist in the investigation of

the problem. Researchers can conduct research by making survey

questionnaires and distribute it to the target respondents. Also,

the evaluation of previous studies on the subject can help us with

our research. Data collection is one of the most important part in

conducting our study to help us to achieve our goal in assessing

the impact in cognitive, emotional, and behavior or utilizing

electronic contraption among SHS students in OLFU.

Our overall goal is to know what is the impact in

cognitive, emotional, and behavior of electronic contraption to

students. And to gather enough data from survey questionnaires,

also many related literatures to successfully assess all of our

main questions, as well our specific problems.

16

To solve all problems that we, we must first identify

the issues that will inevitably affect our research. We’ll figure out

what’s causing this, what the consequences will be, and what we

can do to solve the problem. We’ll find solutions to those problems

by asking our scope and ourselves after we’ve identified them.

We’ll then compare and contrast all the questions, reflect on the

situation, and come up with a viable solution.

Specific Objectives

Firstly, we will focus on assessing the main problems

to be prepared with minor problems that might come to us while

conducting the study. Next is to identify what is our scope and try

to limit our objectives for a specific population. And lastly, to

gather data from the chosen participants and create conclusions,

recommendations or solutions to the said problems.

17

1. To determine how students utilize electronic contraption and

assess it’s impact.

2. To compare who’s most negatively impacted by utilizing

electronic contraption between male and female.

3. To know what is electronic contraption’s impact to students'

behavior

4. To determine What they do if unnecessary conflicts is

occurred.

5. To find out what are the effects of gadgets to students.

6. To investigate how technology and gadgets effect students’

education.

1.5 Scope and Limitation

Scope

The scope of this study is the students who is willingly

to participate to our data gathering among SHS students in Our

Lady Of Fatima University, Antipolo campus S.Y 2021-2022.

18

Limitation

Since the researchers are conducting in Our Lady of

Fatima University Antipolo Campus, they won’t include students

that came from other OLFU campus or any other university.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will benefit to the following:

Students- In this study, the students will identify the impact in

Cognitive, emotional, and behavior of utilizing electronic

contraption to them.

Teachers- The teachers could assess the needs of the students

regarding with the outcomes of this research on how utilizing

electronic contraption affects students’ cognitive, emotional, and

behavior.

Parents- Parents can also have significance in this study. For

their, they will be able to demonstrate the significance of

electronic contraption

Future researchers- And for the future researchers, this study

can serve as a guide to them to gather more information about the

study they will going to conduct.

19

1.7 Definition of Terms

Electronic Contraption- other term used for electronic devices.

Behavior-is the range of actions and mannerisms made by

individuals, organisms, systems or artificial entities in

conjunction with themselves or their environment, which includes

the other systems or organisms around as well as the physical

environment.

Emotions- a conscious mental reaction (such as anger or fear)

subjectively experienced as strong feeling usually directed toward

a specific object and typically accompanied by physiological and

behavioral changes in the body

Cognitive skills- the core skills your brain uses to think, read,

learn, remember, reason, and pay attention.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURES

2.1 Local Literatures

20

According to the study conducted by Briones J. et. Al

(2017) titled “ Epekto ng Teknolohiya sa patuloy na Paghubog sa

Ugali/ Personalidad ng mga Kabataan mula sa Senior Hayskul ng

Immaculate Conception Acedemy, Dasmañas “, they resulted into

a conclusion that electronic devices has direct impact to students

behavior. It shows from their data that most of the students that

uses electronic devices are shy and prefered to be alone. While the

other students that are consuming less time on electronics are

more friendly and most likely to interact with other people. In

addition, among of the students, extrovert are less compared to

introvert, but still the portion of the students who are ambiverts

or has a normal personality is dominant.

The influence of electronic devices on academic

achievement, degree of expertise in the use of electronic gadgets,

and study habits of SHS students did not differ significantly.

There was no significant association between the impact of

electronic devices on academic achievement, grade of efficiency in

using electronic gadgets, and study habits. Learners are aware of

the negative consequences of devices, but they are also responsive

21

and informed about them. The employment of gadgets in

education builds a future foundation of good/strong/progressive

and productive people. In classrooms, electronic devices are

useful. As a result, principals/school heads should enable

students and instructors to utilize technology in class. (Balbaguio,

2020)

Various fields of modern technology have considerably

enhanced people’s lives, including as Medicines, work, industry,

and education, in particular, are all important. We know that

using technology can benefit students by increasing their interest

in and excitement about the session. It also boosted student

involvement and provided us with new viewpoints and information

in class. Furthermore, educational technology-based teaching

tactics can be regarded as ethical practices that facilitate

students’ learning while also increasing their capacity,

productivity, and performance. Instructors are no longer

constrained to writing on plain paper or using a white board to

discuss the lesson. ( STI college Meycacuayan, 2017 )

From the article titled “Using smartphones among

Filipinos’ top daily activities” written by Lucas D (2014) Taking

22

sleep time out of the equation, the ratio jumps to nearly one-fifth

of an average Filipino’s waking hours spent staring at an Internet-

connected mobile device. According to a new study published by

Nielsen Philippines, Filipino users spend an average of 174

minutes each day online—nearly three hours— through their

devices.

Sotto B. (2018) stated that many students are

addicted to electronic devices. Even most of the them knows that

other electronics isn’t good for them, they still do what they want

and even their parents can’t stop them from using much

electronic devices. Most of the students are using electronic

devices for their studies because they can finish their tasks faster

with the help of devices, but electronic devices are also the cause

of their distraction when it comes to their studies.

23

2.2 Foreign Literatures

In the article of Nicole Beurkens (2017) titled “Screen

Time Can Be Dangerous for Kids’ Mental & Physical Health”, she

stated that using digital or or any electronic devices to do online

activities can weaken our cognitive skills like imagination,

reflection and also critical thinking. And because we develop the

executive functions of the brain while we are young into

adolescence, it can affect our sustained attention, working

memory, and ability to inhibit impulses when we spend much

time on electronics.

According in this journal by Hedge, Amitha M., et al.

“Effect of electronic gadgets on the behavior, academic

performance and overall health of school going children-a

descriptive study.” They found out the effects of electronic gadget

usage on overall behavior. Children, on the other hand, are more

secretive about their gadget use, and they get extremely

aggressive and throw temper tantrums when they are forcibly

taken from their devices. A similar type of behavioral change

occurs in children who are addicted to excessive usage of

electronic devices. Anxiety causes behavioral changes. Although

24

this is normally a harmless and temporary phase, children who

suffer from anxiety experience anxiousness, shyness, and fear.

They seek to avoid people, places, and activities, and as a result,

the child may show aggression or temper tantrums when they are

unable to connect to the internet, which, surprisingly, disappears

as soon as their gadgets are returned.

Abdullah Nasser Al Sagr (2020) In the study of “The

effect of electronics on the growth and development of young

children: A Narrative Review. “ A variety of research have shown

that excessive use of electronic devices has an impact on the

child’s psychological, mental, and behavioral development.

Children who use technology regularly tend to neglect their

environment. They would rather face advanced tech than play

with their friends on the playground or the surroundings around

them. The usage of electronics in daily life influences children’s

behavior. Children develop at the stage of exploring and engaging

directly with their environment during the early life. They are

frequently pleased with the fresh experiences they gain from

participating in activities.
25

According to research conducted by Golden Peak High

School (GPHS), (2020). In this study, children whose often use

electronic gadgets can develop more aggressive behavior,

unproductive, and lose interest in academics. The excessive use of

electronic devices may possibly cause a children slow brain

growth. This problem has led to the development of bad

characters in children.

In the study conducted by Mamatha SL. Et. Al (2016)

named “Impacts of Gadgets on Emotional Maturity, Reasoning

Ability of College Students”, they discovered that students who’s

more gadget users have shown more emotional maturity and has

better reasoning ability compared to those students who uses less

gadgets. It is because more gadget users are more active when it

comes to social networking which enhances their interpersonal

relations.
26

Chapter 3

Methodology

3.1 Research Design

The research has the quantitative approach, wherein the

researchers will use numerical data or data that are quantified. For

the research design, the researchers will use descriptive research

design since it involves observing and describing the behavior of the

subject.

3.2 Research Locale

The study will be conducted entirely at Our Lady of

Fatima University, Antipolo Campus. Researchers decided to chooses

50 students in Our Lady of Fatima University Antipolo Campus as

their participants. All of the participants should be 17-19 year old

grade 12 student that has knowledge or experience on utilizing

electronic contraption.
27

3.3 Key Informant/Population Selection

In choosing key informants, researchers used simple

random sampling. Wherein the researcher randomly selects a subset

of participants from a population. Meaning, each member of the said

population has equal chance of being selected.

The researchers has qualifications for the participants.

The participants must have all the qualifications to be part of the

research and the qualifications are; (1) Grade 12 student in OLFU

Antipolo campus, (2) 17- 19 years old, and lastly, (3) has experience

utilizing electronic contraption.

3.4 Research Ethics

By doing this study, these ethical principles imply that as

a researcher, we must do so obtain information consent from potential

research participants, risk no harm to participants, protect their

28

anonymity and confidentially, avoid using deceptive practices and give

participants the right to withdraw from our research.

3.5 Research Instruments

This research was collected through a survey, it used

survey questionnaire created in Google forms. The survey

questionnaire are Multiple Choice Questions and it allows the

respondents to answer the questions faster because they have given

choices and it also consist of close ended questions.

3.6 Data Collection

To collect data from the respondents, the researcher

decided to create questionnaires as a research technique. Due to

pandemic, the survey data will be collected through online using web

forms. The questionnaires will be given to the respondents which is

SHS students who’s using an electronic devices.

29

3.7 Data Analysis

Researchers will examine the data from the questionnaire

or survey form that we provided to the respondent and draw a

judgment in order to generate some solutions to the said problem.

Also, the researchers will concentrate on the respondent’s unique

difficulties with their electronic devices. If it has impact on their

behavior, emotions, or cognitive skills

41

Summary of the Findings

According to 100% of the respondents, all of them are

familiar with electronic contraptions and they are using these

kind of devices, but only 44% of them are sure that they have

enough knowledge how to properly utilize electronic contraptions.

48% said that one of the best benefits of using electronic

contraptions is it is more convenient because you can do what

you want to do in just few clicks with the use of electronic

contraptions. According to the study, 34% of the students said

that they have excellent time management for utilizing electronic

contraptions and another 34% of them said they just have good

time management. So it means, students believe that they are not

abusing the use electronic devices because most of them can set

boundaries when it comes into using electronic contraptions.

Most of the respondents (36%) states that they are only using

electronic contraptions 6-10 hours in a day which is not too much

exposure from electronics, but still, 18% of the respondents are

using electronic contraptions for 16-20 hours in a day, it means

they are spending most of their time on using electronic devices

compare to other activities. Even most of the respondents spend

42

less time on using electronic contraptions, it still affects their time

for other important things to do according to 36% of them. Aside

from their time for other things to do, using electronic

contraptions also has impact on how they behave. 50% or half of

the respondents are getting less productive caused by electronic

contraptions because it somehow makes them lazy. But using

electronic contraptions has a good impact for students’ cognitive

skills, study shows that 38% of the respondents can think or

decide better because of the electronic devices that they are using,

because it lifts up their mood. Meaning, it also affects the

students’ emotions while they are using electronic contraptions

because 44% of the respondents said that electronics devices

gives them positive vibes just by using it.

6. Majority of the students spend their time on electronic

contraption for 6-10 hours a day

7. Electronic contraption are affecting most of the students when

it comes to their important things to do.

Recommendations

Solving problems stated in this study. Further

recommendations for the future researcher could be as follows:

1. We recommend for future researchers to collect more data

about electronic contraption and do deeper research focusing

on one factor only to give emphasis on each factor.

2. To have a study on enhancing the students’ learning capacity in

utilizing contraptions as their medium for learning.

3. Students should do more physical activities during their leisure

time instead of using electronic devices to avoid boredom. It is

to keep their mind and body active and avoid unproductiveness.

4. Students should know how to limit their time spending on

using electronic devices as excessive usage can cause unwanted

effects for their behavior, cognitive, and emotional aspect such

as being more aggressive, cloud thinking and more. It is

important to set boundaries and limitations in usage for the

effects to be healthy balanced.
