STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE FOR OIL
HANDLING AND DISPOSAL
1.0 INTRODUCTION
At the Dangote Fertiliser facility, oils are utilised for extensive administrative
tasks. To promote responsible practices and ensure compliance with regulatory policies,
this Standard Operating Procedure was devised to prevent the discharge of used oils
into the environment. Storage, usage, and disposal procedures for used oil are outlined
in the SOP. An unauthorised discharge of used oil into surface water, stormwater, soil,
or sea may result in severe penalties, even though it does not qualify as hazardous
waste. Applicable to disposing of any used oil collected during routine operations at the
DFL facility, this SOP delineates management procedures for ensuring adherence to
regulations.
1.1 Purpose
Oils are non-water-soluble, viscous substances derived from mineral, animal,
plant, and synthetic sources (petroleum), which are typically combustible. Physical and
chemical impurities, including water, metal scrapings, and dirt, may have contaminated
these used lubricants. When drippings or waterways become contaminated with oil,
they severely threaten the environment. One gallon of used oil can contaminate one
million gallons of pure water. This procedure specifies the appropriate methods for
managing and eliminating used oil from process procedures, equipment maintenance
1.2 Scope
This protocol specifies how used oil accumulated during routine operations at the
Dangote Fertiliser Plant should be disposed of. Used oil might consist of:

and xylene are approximately 150 chemical compounds found in a typical gallon
of petrol.
Fuel oils: Fuel oils, including diesel fuel, are flammable and volatile petroleum-
based fluids that can only be ignited at temperatures above 100 degrees
Lubricating oils: Despite lacking volatility, lubricating lubricants like motor oil and
hydraulic fluids are combustible. Other intense heat sources must be present for
lubricating oil to catch fire (e.g., combustible materials, a heated engine manifold,
etc.). Lubricants containing additives such as lead or metal sulphide and other
Transformer oil: Insulating and conducting heat away from the apparatus used to
convert electricity from high amperage to low amperage lines is the function of
transformer oil. Transformer oil is a liquid by-product that results from the
