Punctuation Practice Lesson Plan for Class 8A

February 8, 2024

SWBAT: Recognize errors in punctuation and make the proper correction. This means that students will feel comfortable
with going back through their own writing and the writing of their peers to correct punctuation mistakes that they have
made.

Time activity
(50m
total)

10m ● Present the learning target:

○ Recognize errors in grammar and punctuation and practice making the necessary
corrections.
● Explain instructions of the activity:
○ Get into groups of 3-4.
○ Choose a creative team name. PLEASE make them short!
○ Your team will need ONE chromebook. Open to a blank Google Doc. This will be where your
answers are recorded!
● Describe how the game will work so the students are familiar with what will be happening during
the class period.
○ To Play:
■ Each team will start with 20 points.
■ I will put a sentence on the board. Your job is to determine if the sentence is correct
or incorrect in terms of punctuation and grammar.
■ If you and your team think that the sentence is CORRECT: Type “Correct” on your
chromebook.
■ If you and your team think that the sentence is INCORRECT: Type “Incorrect” AND
write what part of the sentence is incorrect.
■ Before I reveal the answer, you and your team will be able to gamble as many points
as you wish. If you get the question correct, you will EARN the points that you
gamble. If you get the question incorrect you will LOSE the points that you decided
to gamble.
■ Hint: Be sure to hide your chromebook from other teams. Also, discuss QUIETLY. You
don’t want other teams copying your answers.

35m ● Play the Punctuation Game. Use the follow sentences as they are inspired by common mistakes that
were made within their recent speech assignment.
1. The sun is shining, birds are singing, and the flowers are blooming! (Correct)
2. I love eating pizza cupcakes potato chips. (Incorrect: Missing commas and the word “and”)
3. She is well at playing piano, but he is better at playing guitar. (Incorrect: The word “well” is
not used correctly)
4. The group of students are all very excited about their upcoming exams (Incorrect: There is
no punctuation)
5. She bought too many shoes, her closet is overflowing. (Incorrect: The comma should be
replaced with a semi colon)
● After each sentence, discuss what makes the sentence incorrect.
● Add/subtract the points that that teams decided to gamble.

● Discuss why it is important to look at punctuation and grammar in writing.
