Size of army:
First decide on an army size in terms of numbers of shū. Each shū will be
comprised of a number of sonae:
Shū quality
A maximum of 25% of shū will be ‘good’ (minimum 1).
A minimum of 25% of shū will be ‘poor.’
To generate the individual sonae stats within a shū, cross reference the
shū quality with the time period and roll 1D10 on the appropriate table.
The obvious caveat here is that the table assumes both organisational
development and proportions of firearms increase at the same rate
across the whole country in the same time period. This is clearly not the
case and this table is an over-simplification for game purposes.
You can just allocate army size to whatever you have available and
divide them into shū without rolling.
You can vary troop stats by choosing to roll on a different table for a
specific stat. For example, if you wanted a sonae from the middle period
which had more guns than was usual you could roll once on the middle
period for the organisational/military stats, but roll on the later period
to get the gun stats. Or, for something like an ikkō-ikki army, you could
take their organisational ability from the early period, but the other stats
from the middle or later period.
