I. INTRODUCTION

Absenteeism is one of the factor why teacher got stress during his/her pupils got absent
during classes hour, as a teacher we are responsible enough to visit the house of our pupils,
especially if they always absent. According to Eneza Education, Absenteeism is a truant
behavior that negatively affects the performance among pupils. It cannot be denied that every
now and then, pupils may miss some school activities and lessons. But it becomes if the pupils
will be away from school for many days.
According to the (Marburger, 2001) states that the difficulty inferring the effect of
absenteeism on performance because, once a pupils is absent in a class, he or she may miss the
opportunity of learning other techniques. He found out that missing in class progress the
likelihood of missing examination material covered that day compared to the pupils who were
present in the class.

School absenteeism is an alarming problem for administrators, teachers, parents, society

in general, and pupils in particular. Unaccepted absences have a negative effect on peer
relationships, which can cause further absences. According to Malcolm, Wilson, Davidson and
Kirk (2003) teachers identified the effects of absenteeism on children as: academic under-
achievement, difficulty in making friends which could lead to boredom and loss of confidence,
prolonged absence can have deleterious effects for the child in later life, pupils who are absent
from school are at the greatest risk of dropping out of school early.
The reason of this action research is to aim of every school to lessen and to minimize this
problem, if not eradicate it completely. That is why the researcher conducted an action research
to understand them better. To wanted a more accurate analysis of why some of the pupils are
perennial absentees, so the researcher could formulate plans and programs to minimize their
absences.
The result of this study would help all the teachers who have a problem in regarding with
their pupils who committed absences and to be aware of what can be the affects of being absent
during classes hour.

II. THE PROBLEM

1
This study aimed to identify the Absentee of Grade two pupils in Borbon Elementary School.
Specifically, it sought to answer the following problem.

1. What are the most common causes of absenteeism?

2. Is feeding program an effective way to motivating absentee of Grade two pupils?
3. What are the improvements of the pupils after conducting feeding program?

III. GENERATIONS OF ALTERNATIVE SOLUTIONS

This study attempted to use Feeding Program to the pupils that are selected in this
study to lessen the absenteeism of Grade Two pupils in Borbon Elementary School.
Every Friday at lunch time the researcher will conduct feeding program to motivate
the pupils to avoid absent every school days and the teacher will give 3 stars if that pupils
are always present in the class.

CONCLUSIONS
Among all the causes presented health factors is the primary reason why pupils are absent
from their classes. Flu/fever is the leading culprit in this category. Health which according to the
Department of Education is the main reason why pupils are absent.

The following are the categories of pupils absenteeism;

1. Flu/fever
2. Can’t wake up early
3. Headache
4. Other diseases such as diarrhea
5. Parents asking them to absent
6. Doing the household chores
7. Toothache
8. No money to buy snacks in school
9. Bullied by a classmate
10. Afraid of the teacher.
RECOMMENDATIONS

In order to limit or eliminate, it is recommended

5 that educators;

1. Educate the students on how to take care of their overall well-being

 Teach them how to avoid communicate diseases or the teacher should emphasis
the overall body wellness. Give them the information on how to properly wash
their hands, which is the main sources of germs and bacteria among children. Let
them develop the proper eating habits and encourage them to eat healthy food like
vegetables. Ask them to give those information in their parents.
2. Ensure that classroom atmosphere is conducive to learning
 Noise-reduction among students should be a priority. The teacher must also see to
it that the pupils are comfortable and have no other concerns except the lesson at
hand. There should be a lively interaction between the teacher and the pupils, but
the teacher should see to it that noise is modulated so as not to distract pupils from
their learning.
3. Inform parents about the benefit of keeping their children in school
 Emphasize to them that if they keep on asking their children to be absent, this will
set a bad example to the child. If the parents themselves are keeping the child
away from school, they must believe that household concerns are more important
than their education.
4. Refrain from scolding misbehaving pupils
 The teacher must remind them of their wrong doing in a most diplomatic manner.
Self-control should be a virtue which the teacher should practice in the course of
teaching everyday of the school week.
5. Give extra attention to those who are left behind in the lessons
 Encourage the bright pupils to teach their slower classmates. They must have a
cooperative learning should be practiced in the teaching-learning process.
6. Teacher should motivate the pupils
 It is the way of giving appreciation to the pupils you handle specially that there
are time that they were not having attention by the parents. Teacher must know
the background of the pupils ant motivate them to encourage come to school
always.

REFLECTIONS

Absenteeism is one of the common problems in the school, as the researcher it is hard to
6
know those problems of the pupils why they are committed absenteeism and to encourage them
because some of them are problem in their health factors.

During the researcher conduct the feeding program she must say that when she were
became a teacher she will be more aware of their pupils to know those problem in the inside and
outside of the school.

Teacher’s plays n important role in the classroom and the improvement of the pupils to
lessen absenteeism. Through to this study many of the teacher being aware of everything and to
the parents who are not officious with their children.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
Being always present in class and getting to7school on time of the crucial determining
factors of a pupils success, not just as a pupil but as a person who will be managing his/her own
life in the future. The purpose of this study is to make to find out the factors that influence
pupil’s absences to class. As well, this study helps the management of the school, especially in
overcome problems absenteeism among pupilss particularly in the Faculty of school. According
to (Schmidt,1983), absenteeism affects the pupils’ ability to get high scores in examinations
which can cause the decreasing of grades or the pupil may fail and will cause him or her to
repeat the same grade level. Pupils who have spent time attending lectures or classes have a
significant, positive effect on pupils’ performance. Pupils that participated exhibits higher grades
and scores in examinations that the pupils.

Absenteeism (Teasley,2004) is a period of time when a pupil does not attend school
pupils who do not attend school will generally fall behind their classmates in their academic
success. They have less opportunity to learn the materials that will help them to succeed the
focus of pupil absenteeism ranges from early schooling until adolescent years. Absenteeism in
pupil affects their school performances especially when they are in a group or teamwork for their
assignments and projects. Since grouping will help develops the pupil cooperatives and ability to
share and gain knowledge from their group mates, likewise, the group mates will also miss the
opportunity of gaining knowledge from the absent pupil.

According to (Park and Kerr 1990, Romer 1993, and Foltz 1996, Marburger 2001) it is
widely recognized that absenteeism can negatively impact grades in his/her performance and that
high attendance rates can improve pupil’s performance in variety of classroom, if they go to
school always they well have a good grades because being always in school is the thing that our
grades will get higher during the teacher check the attendance.

According to (Henry, 2007) social learning theory may also be applied to the way parents pass
on their values and expectations relatives to schooling and education. The attitude a pupil’s parents have
toward truancy plays an important role in the extent to which truant behavior persists. High rates of
unexcused absences have been linked to “school disengagement “and lower academic achievement.
